TELFORD, UK – BIRTHPLACE OF THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION

Telford is located in the central area of the UK close to the border with Wales. Part of Telford is the World Heritage Site at Ironbridge Gorge, where Abraham Darby first smelted iron ore with coke. Darby’s experiment opened the way for the series of momentous developments that made the Gorge the cradle of the Industrial Revolution. The world’s first iron bridge still spans the gorge today and is the centre of a series of living museums chronicling the history of UK industry from the 18th century. Today, Telford is a rapidly expanding centre for electronics and high technology companies. ABB in Telford is at the heart of this technology. ABB’s training centre at Hortonwood in Telford is a purpose built training complex designed to provide a relaxed and friendly environment conducive to learning and knowledge transfer. Instructors are from different backgrounds providing a wide variety of experiences, but all are full time professional instructors. A full range of courses is offered on the products and engineering solutions provided out of the Telford site. Our aim is to be partners with our customers in developing and achieving the maximum benefit from their staff. The Telford operation has a satellite training centre in Baku – the capital of Azerbaijan which is focused on Advant Master, AC800 and Process Portal applications.

Introduction Process control systems are continually becoming more sophisticated, with the potential to deliver better productivity and quality. As a result, there is a greater reliance on the expertise and skill of operatives, technicians and engineers to achieve maximum benefit from these systems. Training Support Properly trained personnel bring optimised job performance and skills to their work, ensuring reliable and confident performance under all operating conditions. When considering how much it will cost to get your staff professionally trained, why not also ask yourself how much it will cost if you don’t? The ABB University would like to work with you to achieve the most from your process personnel. We offer standard scheduled training courses for your basic requirements. However, we can go beyond this by helping you to analyse your training needs and offer you support in the form of a range of further training solutions, customised to meet individual situations. We have fully equipped training rooms together with professional instructors, all of whom have extensive knowledge in control system technologies and a proven background in teaching. Classes are primarily practical lessons with a very strong emphasis on hands-on training. A range of standards courses is available, and Maintenance, Operations, Engineering and Management options are offered for each of the control technologies sold by ABB. In addition we can, by arrangement, offer most courses as an on-site option or we can tailor custom courses specifically to suit particular customer needs.

We would like to invite you to contact us to discuss your requirements and to tour our facilities. Jonathan Jowett – Manager

Training Methods

Training in the ABB University is based upon four separate critical components: The Information or Content: Courses are based upon the latest information available. Only

ABB training staff has access to this information. The content is formally identified and an overview is usually expressed in an outline format.

The Performance Outcomes: For our locally developed courses, performance outcomes

specify what the learners will be able to do as a result of the training.

The Instructional Methods: The instructional methods used have been developed as the

result of many years’ experience of instructing on DCS and other control systems. They are the techniques used to help learners acquire information and achieve the stated performance outcomes. They are the psychologically active ingredients of the training programme that cause learning.

The Instructional Media: The instructional media are the delivery devices that carry the

instructional methods. ABB training uses fully qualified instructors and a full range of equipment and instructional technology.

Types of Training Foundation Training Foundation courses are designed as initial training courses for ABB DCS systems. They are normally most relevant at the start of a project or for personnel who are new to a particular role. They have been developed to provide the basic skills necessary to carry out fundamental operations on the ABB DCS equipment in the various disciplines. In general, these courses are fairly generic in their content because they contain skills that are relevant to the safe operation of the DCS, regardless of the type of process. However, wherever possible they will be project specific with regard the particular ABB equipment in use. Foundation training is divided in to 4 areas as follows: Operator Maintenance Engineering Management On all of the Foundation courses, a number of core skills are identified that will be tested, normally by course exercises during the course, to ensure that attendees can effectively demonstrate these skills. Foundation training courses may be organised as part of a project, run on a scheduled basis, or may be set up specifically for an individual customer at a mutually convenient date. Advanced Training Advanced training courses are designed to continue from where the Foundation courses finish. In general they are more application orientated and may be tailored to suit a particular client's need. Most benefit can normally be gained from these courses if attendees have had some practical experience of working with the appropriate system. Most advanced courses do not follow a standard pattern but are set up as a result of discussions between the customer and the training centre. In some cases they may be adapted to allow the development of simulation or the testing of a particular strategy for the clients process. Refresher Training Refresher training is designed to ensure that knowledge and operating procedures of the appropriate ABB DCS are maintained at competent levels. Refresher training is classified into the same 4 groups as the Foundation Courses and may include a check that the skills required in these categories are still at a satisfactory level. Refresher training will follow a standard format although additional material may be included by customer request. Refresher training sessions are not designed as basic teaching courses but to update personnel already familiar with operating the appropriate ABB equipment with any changes to procedures and revise any topics that may have been forgotten. They are not suitable for personnel unfamiliar with system concerned. Refresher training may also be carried out as part of an Advanced Course. On-Site Training Most courses may be carried out at a customer site. However, if this is the case, we strongly recommend that the following guidelines be carefully considered in order that the maximum benefit is derived from the training.

Recommendations for On-Site Training

To gain maximum benefit from on-site training, it is important that the venue provides an environment favourable to learning. At our Training Centre we have tried to ensure this by providing dedicated training facilities. Where courses are carried out at a customer site, it is of great benefit to both instructor and students if they are conducted in a suitable environment. The following guidelines have been compiled to assist in providing such an environment and whereas not essential requirements, they will assist in ensuring a successful training session.

Room Size: The size of the room should be adequate to house the students and instructor

plus the appropriate equipment. Typically a minimum size would be about 30m². Ventilation:

The room should have adequate ventilation – ideally air conditioned – but allowance must be made for the substantial heat generated by the equipment.

Noise: Noise can be a major distraction and can seriously disrupt a course. Common examples are traffic noise and construction work, especially where there are windows through which the work can be seen.

Furniture:

Adequate workspace is required for each student to make notes and use reference books. Additional tables are required for equipment and these should be strong enough to support the weight of large VDU’s. Plastic covered chairs should be avoided.

Access:

Where equipment is being provided, a ground floor room, or access to a lift, is essential. The equipment can be heavy and could be damaged by manhandling.

Power Points:

For equipment use, an adequate supply of power points is needed. These should be 13A sockets and typically a course catering for 6 students will require 13 sockets.

Smoking:

We ask that smoking be not allowed during the course as this can cause problems in a closed environment, especially for the instructor who is talking all the time. If this causes a problem for attendees, we can arrange for appropriate breaks to be taken.

Interruptions:

Interruptions can be a major source of distraction. Wherever possible, interruptions should be restricted to emergencies only during course sessions.

Attendees:

For all students to gain the maximum benefit, they should ideally be about the same level of competence. Where possible the placing of novices and experienced personnel on the same course should be avoided.

Mobile Classroom For training with AC800M, PLC’s and Process Portal A at system version 2 onwards (including System 800xA) we have invested in a mobile classroom. The classroom consists of 7 HP laptops catering for 6 students and 1 Instructor with mini optical USB mice, and AC800M / AC500 controllers using S800 or S500 compact I/O. It runs on either 110V or 240V AC and has been specially designed so that it can be packed away in heavy duty padded cases fitted with wheels. It takes about 2 hrs to assemble the classroom once it arrives at a site by qualified personnel, or alternatively the students can participate in the assembly under the supervision of the course Instructor. (This has been a common request for those customers attending maintenance courses) If requested, we can also adapt the mobile classroom for delivery of Freelance 2000 training and AC800C courses with Control Builder. OSLO models complement our training capability, simulating a simple process consisting of pumps, valves, level, temperature control and alarm annunciations. These aluminium boxes interface to the S800 I/O system allowing students to configure and troubleshoot on a training system right down to the process level, delivering a more realistic training experience than software simulation alone allows. The model provides realistic feedback times, and shows levels and temperatures in real time.

HIRE CARS Most major car hire companies operate from all the airports. A valid driving licence is always required and individual companies may also have other requirements, such as additional identification. Licences in Arabic or Chinese script etc. may also cause difficulty.

TRAINS It is possible to get by train from all of the airports, although all involve changing trains. Birmingham has the easiest access by train.

TAXIS Taxis are available from all airports, although they will be very expensive from the London airports. Typical costs are around £45 from Birmingham and £65 from Manchester, although this will vary according to the time and day.

DRIVING IN THE UK For overseas visitors, please remember that driving in the UK is on the LEFT. Roads can get congested at peak hours and you should allow for this when calculating travel times. The motorway (M6) around Birmingham can get especially busy and may result in up to an hour of additional journey time on occasions.

On each day after the course, and whilst the instructor is still in the building the equipment will be available for revision and practice if required. What will it be like? We like our students to feel relaxed and comfortable. Courses are participative and often contain a large proportion of practical exercises where students are free to work at their own pace. There is ample time for questions and discussion, and students are encouraged to relate their course to their own experiences. If you experience any particular difficulties during the course, please let the instructor know as soon as possible. We welcome any constructive comments that help us to improve courses in the future.

We hope that the time you spend with us will be both informative and enjoyable.
