Friction is a force that objects have which makes them resist motion or movement across oragainst another. Friction is what happens when two things rub against each other like two
hands rubbing together or air slowing down a car.
There are two main types of friction: static friction and sliding friction. Static friction is afriction force that opposes any attempt to move a stationary object along a surface. An examplewould be someone trying to push a heavy bookshelf. Sliding friction is friction where a forceopposes the sliding motion of two surfaces rubbing together. Riding a bike on the sidewalkwould be an example of sliding friction.
Based on the information you just learned about friction. Determine which type offriction is being used below.

A modern-day hockey puck is a hard disk made out of rubber. It is one inch thick and measures
three inches across. The pucks used in AHL games are frozen ahead of game time to make
them less bouncy. Before pucks were used, the earliest hockey players used balls, stones,
lumps of coal and even frozen cow and horse.... you know.

A power play occurs when a player for a team has to go
off the ice to serve a penalty. The team serving the penaltyhave fewer players on the ice, so they are short-handed. The
team with more players on the ice is on a power play.
Power plays are ideal for teams to score goals since they
have one or more players on the ice than their opponent.
During the 2010-2011 season, the Abbotsford Heat had
163 power play attempts at home and 128 on the road.
How many power play attempts did they have for the
entire 2010-2011 season? ______________________
The Abbotsford Heat scored a total of 50 power play
Goals in the 2010-2011 season. To find the percentage
of power play goals scored for the entire season, divide
by the total number of attempts (home and away), then
multiply by 100.
POWER PLAY GOALS =
POWER PLAY ATTEMPTS
X 100 = ________________ % of power play goals for the 2010-2011 season.
