A Memorable Canadian Vacation We were extremely happy when we received our Residency Visas to

Canada in June 2010 and the thought that we will be visiting the dreamland, shortly, thrilled us. We decided our first landing to Toronto, Canada on the 5th of April 2011.

I was accompanied by wife Marjoreen, daughter Nisha and son Nikhil

and left for Toronto from Muscat International Airport through Etihad Airways via Abu Dhabi to Pearson International Airport, Toronto.

Etihad Airways 747 is really a Jumbo Carrier with about 480

passengers on board. About 60 rows of seating capacity with 10 seats in each row. Comfortable seating arrangements with ample leg space, moving areas, wash rooms, TV Screens to each individual traveler, variety of entertainment, ample snacks, beverages and meals made our 18 hours in the Air very comfortable as if we were relaxing at our home. A Memorable Canadian Vacation Continued from page 1…

We completed all the above formalities within the next 2-3 days and kept ourselves free for sightseeing and visiting places. The weather was ranging from +3C to +8C. In Canada, the weather deteriorates to –25C between November to February and goes up to +30 between May to September. Wearing layers of thermal wear, woolen clothing, hand gloves, woolen head caps, and thermal footwear is a must, at least for new residents like us, where as the locals move around in normal clothing. They must have been quite used to that weather.

Traveling in Canada is quite comfortable. Metro Train, Sub way and Road Transportation system, connects every city. Traveling between places is quite easy. Every bus stop, railway station road maps are provided and displayed with exact route maps, bus timings, transfers between train to bus and vice versa. Group passes for families are available at reduced prices with which a family can travel whole day within the city limits. Public transportation system is one of the best we have ever experienced so far. Even though we were traveling for the first time, we felt as if we are in our own country and never experienced any kind of inconvenience though out our journey. The people are very decent, educated and cultured. They follow the system and rules meticulously. The cities are clean and garbage free. As per our observation, at least 30% of the urban population is Asian Nationals who have migrated to Canada.

Here are some of the beautiful places we visited.

The Square One Shopping Mall : One of the largest shopping malls of the world. Located at Mississauga surrounded by sky rise buildings, variety of shopping opportunities attracting huge crowd during most part of the day. Bata Shoe Museum: With an international collection of over 13,000 shoes and related artifacts, the Bata Museum celebrates 4,500 years footwear in four distinctive galleries. We took entire day to see the beginning and transition of footwear industry exhibited in the Museum. Right from the Roman Empire to the Mughal Dynasty in India, the footwear used by the, then, generation are displayed. What attracted the most for us is a 4-inch shoe which was worn by Chinese women as a beauty symbol. It is said that the Chinese women used to wear wooden moulds to limit the size of their feet to 4 inches. Short feet were the symbol of beauty of every Chinese woman during the early century. Toronto CN Tower : Located in the heart of Downtown Toronto between the Sky Dome and the Metro Toronto Convention Center on Front Street, just north of Bremner BLVD. Near the top, a 24 sq. meter glass floor allows visitors to watch the streets under their feet. The CN Tower is the world’s tallest building as well as Canada’s most recognizable icon. At a height of 553.33m (1815 ft., 5 inches), the tower is the center of tourism in Toronto and has 181 storeys. The Canadian National Railways constructed it in 1973-75 within 40 months at a cost of a million dollars. More than 1500 workers struggled to shape the tower. The total weight of tower is said to be about 130,000 tons. With a chance to see the breathtaking view of downtown Toronto, the CN Tower attracts approximately 2 million visitors each year. Things to do in the tower include walking on glass floor, eating over 1000 ft above ground at the revolving 360 Restaurant, watching a movie about the construction of the CN Tower and of course enjoying the view. The Revolving restaurant takes 72 minutes for one round. You can view the entire Toronto city from all the sides sitting on your chair relishing your food.

Casa Loma Castle: This majestic landmark is the unique legacy of Sir Henry Mill Pellatt, a prominent Canadian financier, industrialist and military officer of the early twentieth century. Knighted by King Edward VII, Sir Henry achieved the rank of Major General in the Queen’s Own Rifles, one of Canada’s oldest regiments. He amassed his fortune in such diverse fields as transportation, real estate, electricity generation and distribution and insurance. He was a generous supporter of many worthy causes before his financial empire collapsed. His majestic landmark palace was taken over by the Canadian Tourism Department and today it stands for the glory of its builder. On the brow of a hill, overlooking Toronto, the striking dome of a massive castle dominates the skyline and stirs the imagination. It was built and decorated by most expensive materials, sanitary ware and bedroom furnishings. It has 4 floors, 98 spacious rooms built in aesthetic designs, a huge library, a swimming pool, a beautiful garden. During World War-II this building was used to design strategies to fight the allied forces. The underwater submarine locating technology was designed and monitored from this building. Every stone of the building has a different story to tell. We can see a view of the city of Toronto from the top floor. We were surprised to see the water mixing showers in bathrooms, western closets, and bathtubs etc, which were installed in a building, which was built as early as in 1920s. It is a must see for any traveler who visits Toronto.

Niagara Falls is massive waterfalls on the Niagara River. They

straddle the border separating the Canadian province of Ontario and the US state of New York. They are located 17 miles north-northwest of Buffalo, NY. 75 miles south-southeast of Toronto… between twin cities both named Niagara Falls (one in Ontario, Canada and one in New York State).

Though not exceptionally high, the Niagara Falls is very wide. Between 4 and 6 million cubic feet of waterfall over the crest line every minute, making it the most powerful waterfall in North America.

The Niagara Falls is renowned both for the beauty and as a valuable source of hydroelectric power in the area. Trying to manage the balance between recreational, commercial, and industrial uses has been a challenge for the stewards of the falls for well over a century.

Peak numbers of visitors occur in the summertime, when Niagara Falls are both a daytime and evening attraction. From the Canadian side, floodlights illuminate both sides of the Falls for several hours after dark. Currently, some 20-30 million tourists a year visit the Falls. The oldest and best-known tourist attraction at Niagara Falls is the Maid of the Mist boat cruise, which has been in operation since 1846, carrying passengers into the whirlpools beneath the Falls.

Besides the above, there are lots of other attractions, which have to be visited and enjoyed. They are the spacious Toronto University Campus, Toronto Eaton Center, Marilyn Monroe Building (around 50 story building built in the shape of Marilyn Monroe’s body), Toronto Museum, so on and so forth. The Great beaches of Canada invite every tourist to enjoy their beauty.

With a rich experience of a great vacation, we came back to Muscat on the 21st of April 2011.

OIL INDUSTRY

The numerous activities in oil and gas production can be categorized

into two groups - upstream activities, which include exploration & production, and downstream activities, which include refining, distribution and marketing. Oil exploration has lately become a flourishing business, and a large part of the credit for this goes to the ever increasing demand for oil products in the international market. That being said, oil exploration in not at all as easy process as it seems. Failure at the very first attempt at oil exploration is something that many firms have experienced themselves. It takes sound knowledge of the oil exploration process in order to hit the jackpot when it comes to oil and gas production. Before moving on to how to explore for oil, one has to understand what the process actually means.

What is Oil Exploration?

Oil exploration is the foremost attribute of the petroleum value chain, owing to which we get the two of the basic necessities of the mankind - gasoline and natural gas. Oil exploration is basically the process wherein the experts like petroleum geologists and geophysicists try to locate hydrocarbon deposits, i.e. oil and natural gas reserves, beneath the Earth's crust. Owing to this, oil exploration is also referred to as the 'hydrocarbon exploration' technically. Oil exploration process involves a range of activities right from the identification of a suitable oil drilling site to the actual Oil drilling process.

Crude Oil Exploration Process

Even though there are several regions in the world which boast of rich oil deposits, it is necessary to identify the right one from the lot. Oil drilling sites can either be developed onshore, i.e. on land, or offshore, i.e. on the ocean floor, depending on the presence of crude oil beneath the crust. Gas oozes, oil seeps and crater formations as a result of gas leakage are the most obvious signs of presence of oil in a particular region. Many factors come into play in the process of identification of a potentially attractive site for oil drilling, economic viability being one of the most important.

Once the initial studies confirm the presence of oil in a particular area, advanced technology is used to survey this area in order to find out the depth and the quantity of oil available. This needs to be given a serious thought, as the initial investment required to set up an oil drilling plant is quite high. These attributes are determined by the help of various geological processes, such as the seismic reflection survey and the gravity survey. Depending on the results of these surveys, a test well is dug as a final measure of determining whether the project is really feasible or not. Digging a test well can itself require a decent amount of investment, and hence it is kept as one of the last steps in the oil exploration process. After all of these studies yield the desired results, the oil field is finally given a nod, and handed over to a company in the open market. In Oman PDO is managing the hydrocarbon exploration.

Oil Exploration process has the following steps.

1. Locating Oil

2. Oil Drilling Preparation

3. The Oil Drilling Process

4. Well completion

5. The production

Locating oil

Geologists are responsible for finding oil. Their task is to find the right conditions for an oil trap -- the right source rock, reservoir rock and entrapment. Many years ago, geologists interpreted surface features, surface rock and soil types, and perhaps some small core samples obtained by shallow drilling. Modern oil geologists also examine surface rocks and terrain, with the additional help of satellite images. However, they also use a variety of other methods to find oil. They can use sensitive gravity meters to measure tiny changes in the Earth's gravitational field that could indicate flowing oil, as well as sensitive magnetometers to measure tiny changes in the Earth's magnetic field caused by flowing oil. They can detect the smell of hydrocarbons using sensitive electronic noses called sniffers. Finally, and most commonly, they use seismology, creating shock waves that pass through hidden rock layers and interpreting the waves that are reflected back to the surface.

In seismic surveys, a shock wave is created by the following:

Compressed-air gun - shoots pulses of air into the water (for exploration over water)

Thumper truck - slams heavy plates into the ground (for

exploration over land) Explosives - detonated after being drilled into the

ground (for exploration over land) or thrown overboard (for exploration over water)

The shock waves travel beneath the surface of the Earth and are reflected back by the various rock layers. The reflections travel at different speeds depending upon the type or density of rock layers through which they must pass. Sensitive microphones or vibration detectors detect the reflections of the shock waves -- hydrophones over water, seismometers over land. Seismologists interpret the readings for signs of oil and gas traps.

Once geologists find a prospective oil strike, they mark the location using GPS coordinates.

JOURNEY

All of the life is a journey traversing the roads we take towards our

destination it’s not about how happy we are when we get there but how happy we are while travelling.

During this journey, we should not miss a chance to spot the

rainbow on the way. I hail from Pune, Maharashtra and presently, a Chartered

Accountant by profession and I like cricket, movies, travelling, long-drives & hindi music. I am a foodie and vegetarian and love to experiment with food.

Childhood: Family background – Father has been an Engineer, now

retired and my Mother who has had a strong influence on me – a hard working never-tiring soul. We lived in a joint-family, which has had a positive impact on my upbringing and helped me shape my dream. We are Sindhis and my ancestors belong to Sindh, then in undivided India now in Pakistan. I fondly remember the partition tales narrated to me by my grand-father and I could see the pain within him, not otherwise quite visible in his towering personality, we were one of the wealthiest family in the town then, some unfortunate incidents led them to abandon their homes, shops and belongings to leave for an unknown place, stayed in refugee camps (my dad was just 2 when they came via a huge vessel) Started a sweet mart which grew into a long-run family business for decades, my father with 3 of his brothers-sisters studied hard and went on to become an Engineer. The struggle had a lasting impression on my mind, a foundation was laid then that I have to do something big in life and put all these struggles behind… Hard-work is the key learnt in the early years of my childhood journey.

Teen-age: College-life, drama, chaos, bunking, fun was all there.

Our college professor caught us once in a theatre, he was passing by and saw us attending the morning show of ‘The Blue Lagoon’. He knew my Dad well, he called me in his office and asked me to imagine how my Dad would feel. I felt bad, though I was good in studies in school and was confident that I will get thru’ the exams, but that was not enough, he did not utter a word about it to my Dad unlike my fears. I realized I need to be honest to myself. My second lesson was learnt here to have a ‘Goal’ in life. Benjamin Franklin said, there are 3 things extremely hard – Steel, Diamond and to know one’s self – this I learnt in the second phase of my journey

The Goal-setting was the second important stage in my life, where

a speech from a distinguished guest at the college highlighted something called Chartered Accountancy, yes I was thrilled to see a graph which depicted the ‘earning potential’ of this stream and the M-factor struck the chord, well my Sindhi genes had something to do with this, I believe. I firmed up my mind without realizing the efforts and the sincerity expected out of my, I had scored wonderfully in Accountancy and Costing and was used to being in the top three in the College, so thought it could be a cake-walk.

Looking back, my 3-years rigorous training in the article-ship

have been the best years in my life where I was working, studying, for 15-18 hours a day continuously for 3-years, out-station audits, cinemas, barbeques etc. The efforts paid off, I secured a rank in the Chartered Accountants course and this journey taught me Perseverance and Humility, I saw intelligent colleagues struggling for years together and thanked God for being kind to me.

Career: Having completed the course, I was successful in securing a decent placement with an engineering company of repute in Pune, then moved on to head the finance, tax & IT portfolio of construction conglomerate based in Pune for over 7 years.

After putting in 9 years post-qualification in various fields, I

moved to Muscat to head the finance function of a leading group, where I served for over 5 years, 3 years back I moved to EHC, a fully-owned Government company as head of treasury. This sum up the 20 years of my professional career – the various challenges during the working life has taught me the importance of honesty, integrity, commitment and I believe nobody can take the knowledge away from you and I invested in that generously. We all are fortunate enough to be in a place like Muscat, which offers enough time and environment to pursue the dreams, I continued my educational pursuit further during my stint in Oman and acquired the coveted CPA and CTP credentials from USA. Knowledge is an investment, which stays with one throughout.

Family: My wife, Neetu has always been my support who has

encouraged and guided me through the thick and thin of the life, she is a professor in a pharmacy college in Muscat and earlier in Pune. We knew each other since our school days as she happened to be my sister’s school friend and often visited our house. I have a daughter aged 10 years who studies in ISM. This family life in our journey is all about trust, love and co-operation.

Spiritual life: Post-forty, one has to look at life differently.

We are not human beings on a spiritual journey. We are spiritual beings on a human journey. Life is about giving back to the society, the world at large

There is no satisfaction that can compare when you look

back and found you’ve grown in self-control, generosity, judgment and unselfishness.

The Woods are lovely, dark and deep; there are miles to go, before I sleep

TO A SELFLESS MOTHER

May 10th is celebrated as international Mother’s day. A tribute of love to a mother from her beloved daughter Anna Jarvis .

After Anna Reeves Jarvis died, her daughter Anna M. Jarvis campaigned for the creation of an official Mother’s Day in remembrance of her mother and in honor of peace. In 1908, Anna petitioned the superintendent of the church where her Mother had spent over 20 years teaching Sunday school. Her request was honored, and on May 10, 1908, the first official Mother's Day celebration took place at Andrew's Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia and a church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Today, white carnations are used to honor deceased Mothers, while pink or red carnations pay tribute to Mothers who are still alive. Andrew's Methodist Church exists to this day, and was incorporated into the International Mother’s Day Shrine .

As I wish each and every Mother around the world A Happy Mother’s day, would like to dedicate this poem to them

MORE THAN A MOTHER

-Author Unknown

When God set the world in place, when He hung the stars up in space, when He made the land and the sea,

then He made you and me. He sat back and saw all that was good,

He saw things to be as they should. Just one more blessing He had in store; He created a mother, but whatever for? He knew a mother would have a special place to shine His reflection on her child's face.

A mother will walk the extra mile just to see her children smile.

She'll work her fingers to the bone to make a house into a home.

A mother is there to teach and guide, a mother will stay right by your side.

She'll be there through your pain and strife, she'll stay constant in your life. A mother will lend a helping hand

until you have the strength to stand. She'll pick you up when you are down,

when you need a friend she'll stick around.

A mother is one who listens well, will keep her word; will never tell.

A mother never pokes or pries but stands quietly by your side,

giving you the strength you need, encouraging you to succeed.

A mother is one who can be strong when you need someone to lean on.

A reflection of Him in your face we see, a love that knows no boundaries.

Learning Incidents

EVALUATE WITH VALUE A young couple moves into a new neighborhood. The

next morning, while they are eating breakfast, the young woman sees her neighbor hang the wash outside.

That laundry is not very clean, she said, she doesn't know how to wash correctly. Perhaps she needs better laundry soap.

Her husband looked on, but remained silent. Every time

her neighbor would hang her wash to dry, the young woman would make the same comments.

About one month later, the woman was surprised to see a nice clean wash on the line and said to her husband: "Look! She has learned how to wash correctly. I wonder who taught her this." The husband said: "I got up early this morning and cleaned our windows!" And so it is with life: "What we see when watching others depends on the purity of the window through which we look. Before we give any criticism, it might be a good idea to check our state of mind and ask ourselves if we are ready to see the good rather than to be looking for something in the person we are about to judge.

The above story summarizes on our evaluation. Give

your valuable evaluations to build up the self confidence of the speaker so that he/ she may be uplifted or boosted to improve on his performance rather than de-motivate him on personal judgment. This friendly feedback process is a key part of the club’s success

A young couple moves into a new neighborhood. The next morning, while they are eating breakfast, the young woman sees her neighbor hang the wash outside. That laundry is not very clean, she said, she doesn't know how to wash correctly. Perhaps she needs better laundry soap. Her husband looked on, but remained silent. Every time her neighbor would hang her wash to dry, the young woman would make the same comments.

Give your valuable evaluations to build up the self confidence of the speaker so that he/ she may be uplifted or boosted to improve on his performance rather than de-motivate him on personal judgment. This friendly feedback process is a key part of the club’s success

Toastmaster’s is a school in which participants hone their speaking and leadership skills in a friendly atmosphere.
