Message Stick: Boxing For Palm Island: Part Two

Sunday, 12 September 2010

Palm Island conjures images of anger and despair. Historically it was a prison island, a place where unruly blacks could be put, out of sight, out of mind.

Of course, there is much more to Palm Island than its ill-deserved reputation of being the most violent place on earth outside a war zone. This is the second part of an inspiring story of struggle and hope from this beautiful tropical island off the north Queensland coast.

Message Stick follows the island’s boxing team started by Ray, the 70-year-old father figure and coach who moved to the island a decade ago after he hit the home brew when his kids left home and his marriage broke down. Ray says, “I’ve lived here so long, I think I’m more black than white”.

We meet Noby, a 27-year-old mother of three and former street fighter who beat addiction with the same style she uses in the ring. Noby says, “When I saw that movie, Million Dollar Baby it freaked me out because it was just like me and Ray. We just have to make sure the ending is different to the movie”.

Selwyn ‘King of the Island’ is an 18-year-old apprentice carpenter with real championship potential who uses boxing to keep out of trouble - most of the time.

We also meet Craig, a 27-year-old father who struggles to defeat his demons and become a good role model for his son, and Dennis Jr. 17-year-old model student from a model family.

This is a touching portrait of the boxers as they fight for their lives both inside and outside the ring against the backdrop of Palm Island, a place better known for dysfunction and despair.

Seven Ages Of Britain: Age Of Worship

Tuesday, 14 September 2010

British presenter and commentator David Dimbleby reveals the seven great ages of British culture, uncovering and exploring over 2000 years of extraordinary artistic achievements.

This is the story of British art in the Middle Ages, spanning from the murder of Thomas Becket in 1170 to the death of Richard II in 1400. It was an age defined by worship: whether worship of God, the King, or one's lady love. David Dimbleby looks at the finest creations of the medieval church, like the stained glass of Canterbury Cathedral and the colourful Bury Bible, and is winched 40 feet off the ground to see a rare surviving church Doom close up.

During the reign of Edward I, a new fad called Chivalry gripped the nation, resulting in fabulous creations like the Eleanor Cross of Geddington, Edward III's vast ceremonial sword at Windsor, and the tomb of the Black Prince. But the artistic highpoint of the Middle Ages came with the reign of Richard II, whose patronage inspired three masterpieces: the famous timber roof of Westminster Hall, Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales', and the Wilton Diptych altarpiece. David travels to Munich to see the only surviving English medieval crown, which belonged to Richard's wife, Anne of Bohemia.

Artscape: Obsessed With Walking

Tuesday, 14 September 2010

On a 120-mile trek from Los Angeles Airport to the heart of Hollywood, the notorious writer, cultural provocateur and obsessive walker, Will Self interrogates the meaning of walking in a globalised, industrialised world.

As he traverses suburban LA, Self gathers research material for a new book and evokes the spirit of other walkers whose art has changed the way we think, see and hear, from the French Situationists to Percy Grainger via William Wordsworth, the enemy, who Self indicts as 'the patron saint of tourism'.

Five days after he set out on foot, Self threads his way through the crowds on Hollywood Boulevard’s Walk of Fame. But home again in London, he discovers that this walk has been a turning point in his personal journey.

Part lament and part travelogue, Obsessed With Walking explores both the outer journey and the inner journey made through walking - traversing the physical world and traversing the spirit and the imagination.

Catalyst

Thursday, 16 September 2010

Catalyst celebrates an incredible ten years on television with a retrospective of research and discovery in the first decade of this millennium.

CosmologyIn the first of this 2-part special, astrophysicist Dr Graham Phillips, provides his perspective on what we’ve learnt about the universe in the last ten years. From the big bang to the end of time, more has been learned about the universe in the last ten years than in any other decade.

The history of the worldPalaeontologist, Dr Paul Willis examines the recent revolutions in our understanding of the history of the Earth and the evolution of life on it. In the last decade we’ve seen the resolution of a long-standing debate about human origins; did our ancestors come out of Africa relatively recently, or did different groups mix and evolve across the planet over a long period of time?

Climate changeWhen Catalyst started a decade ago, global warming was regarded by many as a potential problem for the distant future - a scientific hypothetical with few tangible impacts in the here and now. What was once arcane research into parts per million of a trace gas called CO2, now wafts around every household, boardroom, and parliament. Mark Horstman asks what role for science in the debate that is defining the course of the twenty-first century?

Part 2 of Catalyst’s 10-year retrospective next week.

9/11: Phone Calls From The Towers

Thursday, 16 September 2010

Nearly 3000 families lost a loved one on September 11, 2001 when terrorists flew two jets into the twin towers in New York. The towers collapsed so violently that only 300 bodies were recovered.

But for some families there is another legacy – the voices and recorded messages of their sons, daughters, fathers and siblings left on phones as they prepared to meet their tragic fate. Families have lived with these final words since that fateful day. Many of the calls have never been heard in public before.

But now, with full consent from the relatives, who now feel ready to talk about them, these recordings shed light on what actually happened inside the towers.

But they also reveal something more profound – about the choices people make in their final moments; who to turn to and what to say.

Waking The Dead: Magdalene 26

Friday, 17 September 2010

A visibly distressed unidentified woman is discovered naked and disoriented, fleeing from a car accident.

She is taken to hospital where the Cold Case team discover her DNA is linked to a double murder in a Soho club in 1967. She is identified as a successful business entrepreneur and her horrific injuries are the result of a savage attack by her would-be abductors. A man, believed to be her husband, is found dead hanging in the hallway of her home.

The team set out to solve the new murder and the cold case and to link the two.

Someone from the woman’s past visits her at the hospital but she remains oblivious to her arrival. But the visitor herself is then seen being dragged into a car at the hospital entrance.

DSI Peter Boyd (Trevor Eve) discovers she, not the injured woman, is the key to the cold case.

Saturday, 18 September 2010

Police called to a burglary at the home of Fiona and Howard Walsh find their dog brutally slain. Neighbours say the couple is in Spain on holidays.

While it appears to be just a break in, Crime Scene Investigator Eddie Olosunje (Jason Barnett) reveals the house alarm has been disabled and the safe opened. Their car is missing and they are not answering their mobile phones either.

Fears escalate when the couple’s car is later found burnt out on a nearby field with their luggage still on board.

DS Stevie Moss (Lucy Speed) questions the Walsh’s son Rory (Stuart Laing), who has a prison record. He admits to stealing money from his parents’ safe, but denies having anything to do with their disappearance.

Police discover the couple never did catch their flight to Spain, and someone is systematically withdrawing money from their account at ATMs in the city. When cameras reveal it’s Howard Walsh, police set a trap, but a terrified Walsh gets away. When they review the footage, Sgt. Stone (Sam Callis) identifies a man standing in close proximity at every ATM Walsh uses.

Art Nation

This week on Art Nation Henry Wagons looks at the art of impersonation and asks why do musicians in particular pretend to be someone they're not? And why do the fans pay good money to bear witness to this fakery? Wagons unearths a series of wannabees including Tina Turner, Charlie Chaplin, Jim Morrison and Elvis. He even discovers someone in his own image; a Henry Wagons lookalike.

Meanwhile, Art Nation’s presenter Fenella Kernebone is off to look at a unique art exchange program involving artists with intellectual disabilities who have been paired with artists without disabilities. The Portrait Exchange by the Melbourne-based Arts Project will culminate in an exhibition of portraits, each artist taking turns to be both sitter and portrait painter. “Every portrait tells us a story of a relationship and it is these stories that are the focus of this project,” says curator Lindy Judge.

This week in Guilty Pleasures, where well-known faces admit to their ‘secret shame’, it’s the turn of Spicks And Speck’s Myfanwy Warhurst who fesses up to her love of Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers.

Poh's Kitchen

This week Poh has invited Andre Ursini into the kitchen. They’ve become mates through their mutual love of cooking.

Andre has just opened his first restaurant, not surprisingly it features Italian cuisine. And in the same way Poh has been reconnecting with her Malaysian heritage through food, so too has Andre been bonding with his Italian background. It wasn’t until Andre went back to Italy that he found out that ‘gnocchi’ not only means ‘dumpling’ but also ‘stupid head’ - a nickname his grandmother always had for him when he was young.

While Andre cooks Italian classic Gnocchi, Poh makes Abacus Beads, a kind of Asian gnocchi which comes from her mother’s side of the family. A chewy style dumpling, cooked just like gnocchi, Poh’s Abacus Beads are then stir-fried with pork, shrimp and cuttlefish while Andre’s light and fluffy dumplings or gnocchi swim in a sauce of cream and that most Italian of cheeses, gorgonzola. The dish is then finished with the slight bitterness of walnuts.

This is a program that celebrates the differences, and surprising similarities, between Italian and Asian cuisines, and two friends having fun in the kitchen sharing their recipes and their tips and cooking up two delicious dishes.

The New Inventors

Hosted by James O’Loghlin, The New Inventors is home to the brightest breakthroughs in technology, innovation and invention.

Deciding the winner of these three inventions are: agricultural scientist Chris Russell, designer and inventor Sally Dominguez, and engineer James Bradfield Moody.

Inventions featured on the program:

SOLAR PAINT – by inventor Paul Christopher Dastoor from NSW

Imagine what our planet would be like if we were able to harness the abundant light energy that it receives every second of every day. Low cost energy would be accessible by all. We could have cities where every building, every vehicle and every device has a coating that sustainably generates electricity when light shines on it. This vision has driven Professor Paul Christopher Dastoor and a team of researchers at the University of Newcastle.

Solar Paint is the culmination of more than a decade of research and development. The invention uses integrated photovoltaics in paint to generate electricity from the sun. This environmentally friendly solar cell technology could one day allow every household in the world to generate its own electricity, affordably and sustainably.

SEKURE LOK – by inventors Malcolm Davis and Philip Thrift from NSW

Tilt-up construction is the most common construction method in Australia. Concrete slabs are set into a foundation, and propped up with temporary panel braces to secure them until the roof is added. But exposure to wind causes the panel braces to vibrate and the bolts to become loose. When this occurs, the large concrete panels these braces are supporting are at risk of falling, with potentially lethal consequences.

The Sekure Lok washer prevents bolts on concrete panel braces from becoming loose. The washer is designed to fit any brace design and prevents the bolt from rotating, so there is no way the panel can collapse.

EZIVAN – by inventor Peter Buscombe from ACT

Lots of retirees like to hit the road with all the comforts of home. But caravans are either too big or too small. The Australian caravan market is in excess of 100,000 units per year and growing. Peter Buscombe is a retired civil engineer, who along with his wife and children has been camping one way or another for 40 years.

The EziVan is a compact full-featured two-person caravan. It is very small to tow and stow, but inside is spacious, airy and comfortable. It provides most or all of the popular features of larger vans, but in a smaller package. It is also quicker and simpler to set up and pack up, requiring minimal strength and suitable for all ages.
