conservation

of the marine

turtle Marine turtles are some of the planet’s

oldest animals. EWS-WWF are working

tirelessly to ensure these majestic

creatures are protected.

Conserving marine turtles is important not only because of their role in the intricate

marine ecosystem, but by assessing their status and numbers; insights can be

gained into the overall environmental health of an area.

About the MArine turtle ConservAtion ProjeCt

Today, there are seven species of marine turtles. One of these

species is the Hawksbill turtle, which is present in Gulf waters.

However, it is critically endangered, and it is the goal of the eWs-

WWF Marine Turtle Conservation Project to research these turtles

thoroughly to better understand their conservation needs.

There is little data on marine turtles in the waters surrounding the

arabian Peninsula, and even less is known about their migration

patterns and foraging grounds. eWs-WWF’s research aims to

identify their migratory patterns and feeding grounds, which

can guide the design of future conservation programmes and

measures to help ensure the protection and survival of this species.

Over the last three years, eWs-WWF has travelled to a number of

known nesting sites in the region (uae, Oman, Qatar, and Iran) to

fit satellite transmitters to 75 Hawksbill turtles during the nesting

seasons. This feat required camping out and scanning beaches

at night, closely watching for female Hawksbills emerging

from the sea to find a quiet suitable spot to deposit eggs.

Tagging the turtles allows scientists to follow and track the turtle’s

movements via satellite transmitter. satellite transmitters are fitted

to the top of the turtle’s shell in a painless process and secured

using a combination of fibreglass and resin. The transmitter sends

a signal when the turtle surfaces to breathe giving the location of

that turtle on a map, allowing the eWs-WWF conservation team

to pinpoint key areas used by the turtles in need of protection.

Conserving marine turtles is important not only because of their

role in the intricate marine ecosystem, but by assessing their

status and numbers; insights can be gained into the overall

environmental health of an area.

The eWs-WWF conservation team has worked with partners

in the uae, Oman, Qatar and Iran as part of the Marine Turtle

Conservation Project. Marine research Foundation based in

Malaysia is the scientific advisor to the Marine Turtle Conservation

Programme. eWs-WWF also works with government authorities,

as well as environmental and research organisations in the uae,

Oman, Qatar and Iran. These partners are integral to the success

of the project.

Fun FACts

• Turtles can live up to 80-100 years old.

• Temperature determines the sex of developing eggs in

the nest. In cases where the eggs are warm, the resulting

hatchling will be a female. Where the nests are cool, the

offspring will be male. Typically a nest contains warm and

cool areas, so each nest can produce males and females.

• Turtles’ vision is much stronger underwater than it is on land.

• a turtle can go without eating for several months! Turtles

have a feeding or foraging ground, where they eat. However,

when they travel to their nesting grounds, which could be

thousands of miles away, they usually do not eat until they

return to their foraging grounds.

• Turtles do not sleep like humans do. They merely slow down

and reduce activity to “rest mode” with their eyes closed.

However, they are still awake enough to detect when they

need oxygen, and that’s when they resurface to breath.

suffering an 80% global loss of population in just three generations,

Hawksbill turtles are listed as critically endangered by the IuCn

red list. Threats to their habitat through coastal development,

accidental catch in fisheries, targeted egg harvesting and climate

change severely threaten their chances of survival. The Marine

Turtle Conservation Project, working with its partners region-wide,

is working to stem these losses in the GCC region.

Harvesting eggs at nesting beaches, loss of adequate nesting

habitats, incidental mortality due to marine fisheries and

degradation of marine habitats all contribute to the massive decline

in marine turtle populations around the world. Turtle hatchlings

face a number of challenges from: predators on land and if they

make it to the sea, they face a whole new set of threats such as

sharks and dolphins. survival is already a struggle, and human

interference and activities in the last few decades such as placing

plastic waste in the ocean, beach development and poaching has

made their chances even slimmer. It is estimated only about two

out of a 1000 hatchlings survive into adulthood and breeding age.

Globally Hawksbill turtles have been in demand for the

beautiful, intricate designs on their shells, which made them

attractive to artisans and jewellers. Thankfully, this trade has

been curbed through various conservation efforts and is no

longer a threat to these turtles. However, their population

numbers have remained severely depleted since then.

reCent Findings

although the research is still ongoing, eWs-WWF review their

findings often to see if any patterns are emerging in the turtles’

migratory paths. The latest progress report, showed some

interesting and fresh insights:

although the satellite transmission devices used to track the

turtles’ migratory movements have a lifespan of 300-400 days,

there is still one turtle tagged from 2010, and four from 2011,

that are still sending viable signals of their location. The first ever

turtle tagged by the eWs-WWF conservation team, Helia, stopped

transmitting after around 960 days in December 2012.

Turtles living in the Gulf are showing an interesting trend during

the warmer months. The data shows a northward migration

as the temperatures peaked. It is thought the turtles are

moving towards cooler and deeper waters, during this period.

whAt CAn we do to enCourAge turtles to nest?

artificial light on beaches disturbs and deters adult females who

are emerging to lay eggs. Because adult turtles do not like bright

lights, they might not emerge from the sea where bright lights are

shone and so it is important to reduce lighting used on the beaches,

particularly in known nesting areas and during the nesting seasons.

If it’s a healthy glowing complexion you are after,

look no further than your fruit and vegetable

rack. load up on nutritious meals and snacks,

like sweet potatoes, mangoes, and canned

tuna. experts say that foods like potatoes,

mango, tuna and tomatoes foods do as much

for your outside as your inside. Try these health-

boosting foods:

TOMaTOes | These little red wonders are packed with

lycopene, a phytochemical that provides red pigment and

health benefits. It helps eliminate skin-aging free radicals

caused by ultraviolet rays. In other words, it works to protect

against sun damage. To reap the most benefits, heat them

up. a half-cup of cooked tomatoes, for example, packs 16mg

of lycopene. a daily dose coupled with sunscreen will help

block the burn. and tinned tomatoes are just as nutritious!

ManGOes, PaPaYa, anD aPrICOTs | Feeling a little

washed out and pale? Tuck into some mango, papaya, or

apricots. These are full of pigments called carotenoids,

which are stored in the layer of fat directly beneath the skin

and can improve colour. They peek right through the skin to

give you a rosy glow.

COCOa POWDer | Flavonals, the antioxidants in dark

chocolate, reduce roughness in the skin and protect against

sun damage. a study published in 2006 in the Journal of

nutrition found that women who drank cocoa fortified with

326 milligrams of flavonals a day had better skin texture and

stronger resistance to uV rays than those who didn’t get

as much of the antioxidants. Just a few ounces a day, or

a standard dark chocolate bar, is sufficient. another tasty

way to get enough? spoon some cocoa powder into your

morning coffee. Who said chocolate wasn’t good

for you!

FlaxseeDs | Think of these as tiny

wrinkle fighters. They’re packed with

omega-3 fatty acids, which help to

erase spots and smooth out fine

lines. In one study, participants

who had about half a teaspoon

of omega 3s daily for six weeks

had less skin irritation and redness,

as well as better-hydrated skin, according to

findings published in 2009 in the British Journal

of nutrition. That’s likely because fatty acids

attract water to skin cells, plumping the skin

and reducing wrinkling. Flaxseed must be

crushed to have benefit though, so milling in a

grinder or pestle and mortar is essential.

sWeeT POTaTOes | These are chock-full of vitamin

C, which smoothes wrinkles by stimulating the production

of collagen. One study, published in 2007 in the american

Journal of Clinical nutrition, found that people who consumed

4mg of C, about half a small sweet potato, daily for 3 years

reduced the appearance of wrinkles by 11%. Tastier and a

lot cheaper than anti-wrinkle creams we think!

Mussels | If you’re not getting enough iron, your skin

will turn pale and pasty, so regularly include iron-rich choices

like mussels into your diet. One 3oz serving delivers a third of

the daily recommended amount.

sPInaCH | Want to protect yourself against skin cancer?

a study published in the International Journal of Cancer

found that people who ate the most spinach developed

half as many skin tumours over 11 years as those who ate

the smallest amount. This is probably because the folate

in spinach helps maintain and repair Dna, reducing the

likelihood of cancer-cell growth.

GInGer | Ginger on the skin can increase skin’s radiance

and decrease inflammation that may contribute to conditions

such as psoriasis and acne. Ginger is an antioxidant, which

means it inhibits harmful free radicals that cause skin damage

and aging. Ginger’s antioxidant, gingerol, not only fights

skin-damaging free radicals, but also promotes smoothness

and evenness in skin tone. Blue ginger from

Madagascar is a type of ginger that is a

particularly potent antioxidant. You can

experience the benefits of ginger on

the skin by eating ginger in foods,

drinking ginger tea, consuming

ginger supplements or using a

ginger-infused skin care product.

Chia - the ancient superfoodthese tiny Aztec seeds make a comeback

Include Chia seeds in your everyday diet, from breakfast cereal to home made energy snack

Chia (the Mayan word for strength) seeds come from a plant

relative of mint (salvia hispanica), and in pre-Columbian times

were a component of the aztec and Mayan diets and the

basic survival ration of aztec warriors. according to spanish

manuscripts, the aztecs ate the seeds of this semitropical

plant to improve their endurance and called it their ‘running

food’ because messengers reportedly could run all day on

just a handful. The aztecs prized chia more highly than gold

and it was a major crop in central and southern Mexico well

into the 16th century, but it was banned after the spanish

conquest because of its association with the aztec ‘pagan’

religion. now, after half a millennium, chia has made a

comeback and is now popping up as being a key ingredient

in energy bars cereals.

HOW GOOD Is IT

These nutty tasting seeds have the highest known level of

essential omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid, more protein, energy

and fibre than any other whole grain, and are an excellent

source of calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, potassium,

iron, and zinc. They are loaded with antioxidants and have

among the highest antioxidant activity of any whole food -

even more than fresh blueberries.

another interesting fact is that the seeds dissolve inside

your stomach and intestine to form a smooth, soft, gel-like

substance that helps your body digest carbohydrates more

efficiently before the glucose enters your bloodstream. This

means a slower blood glucose and insulin rise, leading to

better glucose stability and energy. This makes chia a “low

glycemic index” food. studies show that diabetics, who

especially need to control their blood sugar, really benefit

from adding chia to their diet. The unique combination of

nutrients, great taste, energy profile, and physical properties

of the chia seed make this a true (and proven) winner for

endurance, bone mass, heart health, gastrointestinal health,

and general wellness.

superior to just about every other seed and grain, chia seeds

can be stored for several years without ever going rancid or

losing their potency, they are easily digestible and do not

need to be ground down before eating (unlike flax seed), and

they can be enjoyed in a variety of ways. some people like

to eat chia seeds straight as a healthy snack, while others

like to mix chia seeds with different types of food and drink.

Due to their very mild flavour, chia seeds can be added to

just about any food without changing the taste at all. You

can sprinkle ground or whole chia seeds on cereal, yoghurt

or salads; eat a handful of whole seeds as a snack; or grind

them up and mix with flour when making muffins or other

baked goods.

HOW TO eaT IT

adding just 2 tablespoons of chia seeds to your daily diet

will give you approximately 7g of dietary fibre, 4g of protein,

205mg of calcium, a whole list of vitamins and minerals,

and a whopping 5.2 grams of omega-3 and 1.7 grams of

omega-6! Yes, I said grams, not milligrams! That is about

5 times more omega 3 than you get in most supplement

capsules and 8 times more than you get from eating salmon.

That is one heck of a superfood!

a simple way to use chia seeds is to make your own ‘iskiate’

a drink popular in Mexico and Central america. stir 2tsps of

the seeds into 8-10oz of water (you’ll end up with a slightly

gelatinous liquid). add lime juice and honey, and enjoy!

Black or white - they both taste the same and give the same

superfood benefits!

Cooking with chia seeds is easy, fun and very healthy.

Chia seeds are tiny, hard and have a subtle nut-

like flavour when chewed, but they have the unique

property of absorbing liquid. When stirred into liquid

they soften and absorb 9-12 times their own weight

of the liquid. They take on the taste of whatever

liquid they are placed in, which makes them ideal to

use as a thickener in all sorts of recipes.

Do you ever wish to feel more confident in whatever things

you’re doing without feeling anxious? sometimes, you think

you can do it, but when it come to take action, suddenly you

feel anxious and become less confident. This always happens

in situations where you have to deal with your boss, meeting/

presentation times, on the dance floor or even when meeting

new people. lack of confidence always makes people feel

useless, frustrated, unhappy and presents an obstacle in

going after their dream job.

Positive thinking is the first step in boosting your confidence.

Your mind is a very powerful thing. If you tell it something

enough times, it will believe it, so if you constantly engage in

negative self-talk, you can bet your mind will believe it. When

you catch yourself putting yourself down, stop. switch that

negative to a positive and before you know it, your mind will

believe that instead.

act as if you are confident, even when you don’t feel it. This

is another way to fool your mind into believing you have

confidence. Whenever you feel uncertain or shy or nervous,

think of someone who always shines with confidence and act

like them. You aren’t being fake or pretending; you’re simply

in training.

We all know that the sight of chocolate can make our hearts

go pitter-patter. Or that the thought of a scoop of ice-cream

can put a smile on our faces. But can certain foods actually

give your self-esteem a boost? according to a study, the

answer is most definitely yes!

a study has been recently released that reveals how to

boost your confidence in a whole new way: the amino acid

tryptophan, found in many foods such as seaweed, turkey,

soy beans, salmon and milk, among others.

researchers in McGill university in Montreal, Canada, found

that food containing the amino acid tryptophan makes

people more confident. Volunteers in the study who were

given three grammes of tryptophan supplements said they

felt more confident when in social situations. That’s because

tryptophan boosts levels of serotonin, a chemical your brain

produces that makes you feel relaxed and good about yourself.

In fact, most anti-depressants work to boost serotonin levels

in the body. This generally follows that heightened levels of

serotonin in the body has anti-depressant effects.

so if all else fails, you may want to consider adding some

tryptophan to your diet.

Turkey is notorious for its tryptophan content. Why do

you think people claim that they feel so relaxed after gorging

on Thanksgiving turkey they fall asleep right after?

OILy FIsh like salmon contain essential fats like DHa.

studies show that DHa alters the composition of nerve cell

membranes, which in turn reduces depressive symptoms.

GreeN LeAFy VeGGIes Green leafy veggies such as

spinach are high in folic acid. studies show that the higher

the folic acid in your body, the higher the serotonin present.

DArk ChOCOLATe You read that right – cocoa is well

known to increase serotonin levels! The key is to buy dark

chocolate that has a 70% or higher cocoa content. The darker

the chocolate, the more anti-oxidants and polyphenols.

Confidence can take you a long way and open up a lot of doors.

If you suffer from chronic low self-esteem, you will benefit from

these tips on how to boost your confidence.

Denmark: plastic bag tax is twice that for paper bags, with both paid by retailers upon purchase. Consumption of paper and plastic bags has declined by 66 percent.

Ireland: A 30 cent fee per bag for retail customers has resulted in a 90% reduction of single-use bags.

south Africa: banned all plastic bags thinner than 30 microns.

switzerland: requires supermarkets to charge 15-20 cents per paper bag.

taiwan: banned the free distribution of plastic bags and food service ware by government agencies, schools, restaurants, supermarkets and other stores.

rEMEMbEr: You must wash reusable grocery bags occasionally to ensure no foodborne bacteria is present.

When using reusable bags, you should be careful to separate raw foods from other food products.

You should not use reusable food bags for other purposes such as carrying books or gym clothes.

You should not store meat or produce in your car for any extended period, because the higher temperature promotes growth

of bacteria, which can contaminate reusable bags.

Keeping those resolutions might be harder than you think ...

During the holidays, everything we consume is pretty much

awful for us: fudge, chips and dip, cheese balls. We swear

to ourselves that 2013 will be different. Gone are the Friday

brunch blow outs, it’s time to eat healthily and get fit. It all

sounds so good and possible on Jan 2nd.

The problem is that most people take this resolution too far by

forcing themselves onto restricting diets they can’t possibly

keep. as the saying goes, try everything in moderation,

including moderation. eat healthy food, but allow yourself a

treat now and then. Otherwise, it won’t be long before this

resolution falls by the weight-side.

It may be a new year, but there are still old problems in the

world. To start out on the right foot, you may resolve to lend a

helping hand. You can help build a house, care for an animal,

distribute food to the hungry, tutor a student.

all sounds doable? let’s look at some statistics to help you

choose an achievable goal ...

LOse weIGhT AND GeT FIT

It’s one of the most common new Year’s resolutions. after a

season of way too many cookies, candies and holiday parties,

it’s only natural that a vow to lose weight and get fit would

follow. each January, fitness clubs offer deals and promotions

to those who want to make good on their resolutions. To those

who have been at the gym for the other 11 months of the year,

the crowded classes and treadmill lines make the new year a

dreaded time. luckily for gym rats, research says that 60%

of gym memberships go unused and attendance is usually

back to normal by mid-February. Choose a specific workout

day and buddy-up to help you stay on track and build a habit-

forming schedule.

sTOP smOkING

so you want to quit smoking? You should. It yellows your

teeth, infiltrates all your clothing, irritates your significant other

and charms only those in an ever dwindling crowd of fellow

smokers. so what better time than now?

Good luck. Only an estimated 15% of people who try to quit

manage to stay cigarette-free six months later. Try a product

to help wean you off your nicotine addiction or try to quit with

a fellow smoker and encourage each other’s efforts.

LeArN sOmeThING New

You’ve been meaning to learn French. You’d love to play the

piano. How great would it be to really know how to cook?

You’ll read Mastering the art of French Cooking, and, man,

you’ll master it. You can even work on your French at the same

time! resolving to learn something new is exciting: the world

is full of fascinating facts, skills and talents. and the process

of discovering them, not just the end result, is enjoyable and

rewarding. at least, for a while. soon you discover that French

is too hard, piano takes too much practice, and ordering take-

out is just so much easier than cooking. Try getting a group

of friends to commit to a session of music lessons, language

classes ... you might even get a group discount!

heLP OThers

Helping others can be a rewarding experience, especially if you

are also enjoying what you are doing. Commit to a challenge

with a charity group like Gulf for Good, where participants are

physically challenged on an adventurous journey and also

get to meet or help people less fortunate all over the world. It

might also fulfil another resolution - to travel more!

January 2013 n Issue 12

Four out of five people who make New Year’s resolutions will break them ... one third won’t even make it to the end of January.

lebanona walk in the

clouds in

Explore the mountains of Lebanon winter to summer and

prepare to be amazed with its natural beauty.

Featuring wide expanses of incredible natural resources and

a vast diversity of tree species the mountain regions are

renowned for their history, olive groves and fruit growing, and of

course the local people. Before making the trip to this particular

area, I really had no idea what to expect other than what I had

researched online, with all roads seemingly leading back to the

famous lMT, if its a hike you are after.

The lebanon Mountain Trail (lMT) is a 26-section, 440km

hiking trail extending from Qobayat in the north of lebanon to

Marjayoun in the south, passing through seventy-five towns and

villages, several nature reserves, as well as a World Heritage site

(the Qadisha Valley), numerous Medieval and Ottoman castles,

roman temples and Byzantine churches. The region has been

inhabited as far back as 3,000BC and artefacts dating back to

Phoenician, Greek and roman eras have been discovered here.

The lMT runs north to south at altitudes varying between 1,400

and 2,100m and was funded by a grant from the american

development agency usaID. Joseph Karam, a lebanese

expatriate was one of the main instigators in the trail’s creation.

“nowhere else in the Middle east can you walk from a coastal

climate to the snowline in a few hours ... we have modelled the

lMT on the appalachian Trail in the states. If all goes to plan

the trail could bring much needed income into the mountains,

where the local economy is often very fragile”.

Well, Mr Karam I would love to agree with you, if we had

managed to find the trail in the first place. spending $44 on a

reminiscent of the beautiful alpine regions of europe, you can run, walk or

amble along footpaths, dirt tracks and quiet roads taking in breathtaking

views and the unbounded generosity of the local mountain people.

vistas so beautifully breathtaking

book and maps which never arrived, we set off with just the, what

seemed like quite detailed descriptions of the route, and an overall

map of the entire trail downloaded from the lMT website. In 5

days, we saw the red and white identifying marker, usually found on

immovable objects such as trees and rocks ... precisely once. Much

of the route we chose starting at ehden and moving south, was

snow-covered admittedly, but if you are going to claim that routes

are accessible all-year round, as the descriptions do, then markers

have to be clear, as obvious paths are invisible. even when snow

is not an issue, start and finish points are so loosely described it

is impossible to get yourself on the trail without GPs coordinates,

of which there are none. These would prove invaluable to future

updates, saving frustrating and often very long days going in the

wrong direction and backtracking to try and find the way.

Frustration aside, the area is just stunning. Following ancient drover’s

trails, shepherd’s tracks and the occasional metalled road, routes

link Muslim and Christian villages passing through woodland, arable

land and the jird - rough mountain terrain which is snow-covered in

winter and used as high pasture land during the summer months.

and when all else fails, i.e. not finding the lMT, as long as you have

a direction and village to head for, you will not be disappointed

with what you find. I would recommend making out and back hikes

instead starting and finishing in the same village, this way you can

leave bags at your lodging and just take your day’s supplies, and

without a specific trail to have to stick to, you can enjoy the day

without wondering when it might end!

up here in the mountains, walkers are a rarity and you’ll find,

especially out of season, that people are curious of your adventures.

It seems the villagers do not walk for fun, their lives are, I imagine,

are hard enough without trotting up and down these steep hills in

their spare time. You will find though, that what little they have, they

are willing to share it with you. Be it lodging, food, advice or a car

ride - all will be given freely and generously if a little inaccurately

some of the time. If there is one thing not to ask, it is how far is your

next destination. answers will vary wildly, almost as if their lives are

restricted to the village perimeter and nothing beyond. With either

blank faces or numbers seemingly plucked from the crisp mountain

air in response.

apple orchards line terraces at high altitude

the winter sun paints a magical picture

The route will take in some magnificent scenery, hundreds of high

altitude apple orchards and ancient monasteries, rocky streams

where water erosion reveals an artist’s palette of ambers, pinks

and purple hues underfoot, but also some reminders of inevitable

progress as ugly quarries scar the landscape of this otherwise

scene of nature’s perfection. little attention is given to crumbling

and abandoned abodes, and slight regard is paid to keeping the

environment in the pristine condition it deserves. Plastic bottles,

discarded food, rubbish, construction debris and all manner of

rubbish litters the approach of almost every village.

This aside, efforts are being made to regenerate the forests of the

country. In ancient times, lebanon was covered by large forests

of cedar trees, the national emblem of the country. as a result of

longstanding exploitation, few old Cedar trees remain in pockets

of forests in lebanon, but the lebanese government plans to plant

one million trees a year with the help of usaID, which is funding

a $12-million project to reforest lebanon. One can only hope that

everyone can see the value of this and other environmental projects

that will help preserve the natural beauty and attract tourism to this

wonderful country.

Our 5 day route took us from the non-descript village of ehden

through Bcharré or Bsharry depending on which sign or map you

look at, yet another complicating factor to finding your way. Hasroun

and Bqaa Kafra, the highest village in lebanon, and the Deir Houb

Monastery of Tannourine where priests were kind enough to grant

our request for a night’s lodging - gathering around the warmth of

the open fire offering us roasted chestnuts as we did our best to

communicate details of our adventure in a mixture of english, French

and arabic. To aqoura, akora and aqoura, yes we did all three,

and yes, two are spelled the same but are entirely different places

depending on the pronunciation - another complication. Then to afqa

and finally Hrajel and the snowy slopes of Fariya where city dwellers

escape for a weekend’s winter sport and aprés ski - and where we

made our final ascent to 2200m to enjoy an awe-inspiring view of

the snow-capped mountains and distant city of Beirut perched at

the edge of the Mediterranean sea - all bathed in the glorious winter

sunshine.

It’s desperately hard to leave the peace of the mountains behind,

particularly when your destination is a busy, traffic-filled and polluted

city. and after a week of enjoying the hospitality and kindness of the

mountain villagers, the craziness of Beirut is a bit of a shock to the

system.

Thirty years ago Beirut with its stylish French influence and eastern

magic was known as the Paris of the east but then civil war tore the

city apart. Over the past ten years, the lebanese capital has done its 34

best to dust itself off, however, apart from an atmospheric stroll

along the corniche to get a real sense of the culture, history

and hospitality of lebanon you really need to venture out of the

city. In Beirut, the emphasis is very much on having the ‘right’

brand of bag, the ‘right’ outfit for shopping or sitting having

coffee and our outdoor clothes and dishevelled appearance

was as much a point of interest as in the mountains, except

here it felt like a sneer of disgust rather than one of curiosity.

sadly, the old souks of the city were destroyed in the war and

have been replaced by glitzy new ones that would not be out

of place in any modern-day city - but it is disappointing to

find high-street stores instead of the cultural fix I was looking

for. saida’s souk on the other hand appears unchanged for

centuries - just 40km south of Beirut you will discover a maze

of narrow alleyways, arched pathways and winding streets

where traditional craftsmen work and local lebanese snacks

are plentiful. If however, you prefer a starbucks and stroll

around Zara, you will find what you’re looking for in over 200

stores housed in the combined souk al Tawila (the long souk),

souk arwam, souk Jamil, souk ayyass, souk sayyour, souk

Bustros and souk arwad in the Downtown area of the city.

If you want to discover a more authentic Beirut, put on your

walking shoes and just follow the streets. You can walk or cycle

the Corniche and end up at the raouche where buses and taxis

deposit tour groups on the cliff top to look at the natural rock

formations (as well as the ever-growing unnatural formations of

plastic bottles and rubbish strewn carelessly in what should be

a place of beauty). However, the city is small enough to explore

on foot and using the Mohammad al-amin Mosque as a

starting point you can wander to your heart’s content - through

the roman baths, past bullet-riddled buildings crumbling into

disrepair right next to sparkly brand new ones shooting up and

creating Beirut’s new skyline and buzzy, ‘cool’ districts where

the in-crowd hang out. streets will take you through areas of

obvious wealth and glaring poverty. Buy from street vendors

selling ka’ak filled with salty cheese or hot-off-the-plate za’atar

manakish accompanied by an industrial-strength espresso

instead of ordering a blueberry muffin and latte in the mall.

In Beirut you will find history, wealth, poverty, architecture old

and new, diversity of faith and places of worship, designer

brands, rich culture, local delicacies, haute cuisine and more -

just don’t make it your only stop in lebanon, the country has

so much more to offer. Head to the mountains and a beautiful

walk in clouds.
