The MousetrapThe legendary, record-breaking, Box Office smash hit thriller returns! A classic. A landmark. A legend. The Mousetrap is famous around the world for being the longest running show of any kind in the history of theatre, with over 25,000 performances and now the 60th anniversary production is back by popular demand following a record breaking sell out week in 2013.The scene is set when a group of people gathered in a country house cut off by the snow discover, to their horror, that there is a murderer in their midst. Who can it be? One by one the suspicious characters reveal their sordid pasts until at the last, nerve-shredding moment the identity and the motive are finally revealed. In her own inimitable style, Dame Agatha Christie has created an atmosphere of shuddering suspense and a brilliantly intricate plot where murder lurks around every corner.

Starring Vladimir Dragos as RigolettoFeaturing a magnificent golden eagle with a seven-foot wingspan.A stunning traditional production recapturing the decadence of Renaissance Italy with lavish sets and opulent costumesVerdi’s masterpiece Rigoletto is a dramatic tale of the jester’s daughter whose heart is stolen by a charming but unreliable ruler – and how her father’s attempts to prevent the love affair lead to tragedy. The opera was almost banned because it exposed the licentious behaviour of the powers-that-be at court.Featuring the two of the most celebrated tenor arias La Donna è Mobile and Questa o Quella justly turned into classics by Caruso, Rigoletto is based on a play by Victor Hugo, who wrote Les Miserables.

The titles give a clue – Boiling a Frog, A Big Boy Did It and Ran Away, One Fine Day in the Middle of the Night… There’s a wild, dark, anarchic sense of humour at work here, and it’s linked to a real gift for storytelling. He’s usually listed as a ‘crime writer’ (sub-genre Tartain Noir). But that’s not the half of it. His most recent novels are Flesh Wounds and Dead Girl Walking.

LAUREATES’ EVENT 7.30pm

Carol Ann Duffy, Liz Lochhead, Gillian Clarkewith music by John SampsonCAROL ANN DUFFY, the UK’s Poet Laureate, has single-handedly brought poetry to a mass audience with work that is sublimely beautiful, deeply moving, outrageously funny, and above all, accessible. She reaches all ages and has read to audiences of school pupils numbering thousands. She has redefined the Laureateship for the 21st Century, and in performance she is mesmerising.

LIZ LOCHHEAD is Scotland’s Makar, or Poet Laureate (a post in which she succeeded the great Edwin Morgan). She is a much loved poet and dramatist (her play Mary Queen of Scots got her head chopped off is a modern classic). Her work is hugely popular with all ages and she recently published a representative selection, A Choosing: The Selected Poems.

GILLIAN CLARKE is the National Poet of Wales and her many awards include the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry. She is also a successful playwright. With Carol Ann Duffy she has read to thousands of school pupils and she is part of the GCSE Poetry Live team. Her latest poetry collection is Ice. Like her fellow Laureates she is a powerfully impressive reader of her own work.

CULTURE CAFE

TWO FABULOUS EVENTS AT THE MUSIC HALL’S CULTURE CAFÉIn the run-up to the University’s May Festival, we present two unmissable literary events on the one day, featuring some of the very best writers ever to visit Aberdeen.

With University of Aberdeenand Aberdeen Performing Arts

James Kelman 1pm

JAMES KELMAN is the most influential Scottish writer of his generation. He’s a Booker Prize winner (for How Late it was, How Late), an internationally renowned novelist and short story writer, dramatist, essayist and polemicist who has drawn comparisons with Beckett and Kafka. Outspoken and politically engaged, he brings an uncompromising integrity to everything he does. But the work is grounded in a profound humanity, shot through with a dark (and recognisably Glaswegian) sense of humour. Hearing him read his own work is an unforgettable experience.

Dunedin ConsortPurcell & Handel Royal MusicHandel Coronation Anthems: Zadok the Priest My heart is inditingPurcell Ode to St CeciliaJohn Butt DirectorOriginally composed for the coronation of George II in 1727, Handel’s coronation anthems Zadok the Priest and My heart is inditing are among his best-loved choral pieces. With the splendour of trumpets and drums and their rousing beginnings, we hear Handel at his most extroverted. The Ode to St Cecilia is one of Henry Purcell’s largest choral works and presents a fitting tribute to the patron saint of music. Purcell makes use of a number of dance forms, typifying the elegance and poise that were to become hallmarks of the English baroque.

Dunedin ConsortBach’s St Matthew PassionJohn Butt DirectorNicholas Mulroy EvangelistRobert Davies JesusJS Bach’s St Matthew Passion was first performed at Easter between 1727 and 1729, and has since become one of the towering works of classical music. It brings together two orchestras and choruses to create a powerful meditation on the story of Christ’s crucifixion, as related by the Gospel of Matthew. Using similar forces and instruments to those that Bach would have used, the Dunedin Consort makes use of 8 individual solo voices alongside the group’s characteristically virtuosic instrumental players, highlighting a real sense of clarity and emotional expression in exploring what is often considered Bach’s masterpiece.

Tchaikovsky’s dramatic themes, intense rhythms, and soaring, dancelike melodies make an immediate connection with audiences. His Andante Cantabile and the Serenade for Strings are powerful, moving works that come straight from the heart. Written during a visit to war-torn Dresden, Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony is a gripping portrayal of the brutality of conflict. Its jagged, dynamic rhythms in the central sections are contrasted by elegiac outer movements that never fail to move the listener.

But Glazunov was more than just a great teacher – and The Seasons is more than just the missing link between Tchaikovsky’s and Stravinsky’s ballets. It’s one of Imperial Russia’s forgotten treasures, glittering with colour and brimming over with hummable tunes. Ilan Volkov charges it with all his trademark electricity, while Mariinsky Theatre veteran Yuri Vorobiev brings true St Petersburg style to the pitch-black humour of Mussorgsky’s pungent songs. For the great Austrian song-symphonists, the words and images of German folklore opened up vast new worlds of poetry and feeling. Bruckner shaped them into the most colourful (and lovable) of his nine vast symphonies whilst the young Mahler got straight back to the source, finding the strangeness and wonder that lie beneath the most outwardly innocent folksongs in his endlessly imaginative Des Knaben Wunderhorn. The 71 year-old Janácek took a massive orchestra, lined up eleven more trumpets and let fly with his extraordinary Sinfonietta: a huge, brassy shout of joy that has to be heard live to be truly believed. Shostakovich, meanwhile, wrote a final symphony that seems to ask as many questions as it answers – and simply refuses to sit still and be taken seriously. Mike + theMechanicsThe hardest working band in the business? Very possibly. No sooner had Mike + The Mechanics finished their fantastic The Living Years 25th Anniversary Tour with a blow out gig at the Hammersmith Apollo in March than they embarked upon a whirlwind set of dates in Europe (from which they’ll take a brief sojourn to play the REWIND festival in Henley and Cheshire in August). And they’d barely embarked upon that mini-odyssey before they were plotting their next big UK tour. Don’t deny yourself the chance to see Mike and the Mechanics in the flesh in 2015 (especially if you missed them in 2014) – they can’t keep this pace up for long.
