The Annual National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence was held on 17 March 2017. Our Student Voice students organized a range of events to highlight awareness of students about this very important issue. This included:
• Students signing a pledge to saying no to bullying. The students undertaking the pledge signing was captured on video by one of our Year 12 Students Jarryd Sutton.
• Senior School students creating a video about no bullying. • Creation of a human ‘no way’ symbol.
In a recent Generation Next emagazine it was identified that 80% of children are not engaging in cyberbullying that is, 80% are using online space in a responsible way. As part of the article a video clip featuring Greg Gebhart from the Office of eSaftey www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmWp3SB3Aol
If you become aware of your child being bullied at school there are a number of staff who can assist. These include our counsellors Carol Davey and Nathaniel Steele, Jo Dean our Youth Worker and Fraser Howard our Chaplin.

ABERFOYLE PARK HIGH SCHOOL OPEN NIGHT At the recent Open Night on 21 March in excess of 200 students attended as tour guides, greeters, helpers and demonstrators of the range of learning opportunities in the school. We can be very proud of our students in their commitment to the school and their ability to interact and communicate with a range of members from the community and beyond.
As we approach the end of Term 1 teaching and learning is well underway. Students have been working on assessment tasks with staff providing feedback as well as achievements. In visiting classes I have been able to see the breadth and depth of learning that has been occurring in the school. Our Year 8 students have almost completed their first term at high school and students undertaking SACE Stage 2 have another two terms in which to work to complete and demonstrate their achievements against the SACE Performance Standards. POSITIVE PARTNERSHIPS Positive Partnerships is a national project, funded by the Australian Government Department of Education and Training through the Helping Children with Autism package. We are delivered by Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect), with a goal to improve the educational outcomes of school-aged students on the autism spectrum. We work with schools, communities and families across Australia to deliver evidence-based content through workshops, webinars and online learning through our website. We aim to foster productive relationships in support of school aged students on the spectrum, with a focus on working respectfully and appropriately with people from many diverse backgrounds. These workshops are Federally funded (free) workshops which enable parents to learn how to work effectively with schools as well as develop a deeper understanding of their children who have an autism diagnosis. INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM We are looking for willing families to host International High School students attending APHS on our next International Study tour, Term 3 2017. Who can be a Homestay family? Homestay families come from all walks of life. They can be parents of students who attend our school, retirees, couples or single. All we ask is that you welcome the student into your home and share the Australian experience with them. Why host an international student? The experience of hosting an International student can be very rewarding and you can make lifelong friends with the student and their family. Learn about another culture and traditions and be a tourist in your own country by showing the student the local tourist attractions.
Becoming a Homestay family is a big responsibility as you will be looking after someone else’s son or daughter but it can be very rewarding and a great experience. We will provide you with: • A personalised home visit and information session. • A homestay allowance ($250 per week). • Invitation to a farewell party on the students last day
at school. • 24 hour emergency telephone support service.

PRIMARY SCHOOL STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) roadshow We’re taking STEM on the road! The STEM team at Aberfoyle Park High School are providing the opportunity for Year 6/7 students in our community to have STEM come to them and showcase a small sample of the many STEM learning opportunities available at APHS. Already we have visited a number of primary schools who have enjoyed and actively engaged in our highly interactive and hands-on STEM activities. Students have got their hands dirty during our Oobleck activity and had their problem-solving and reasoning skills challenged whilst participating in our coding activity. If your primary school is interested in having our STEM team come out and provide this service please don’t hesitate to contact me on [email protected] and we’ll get this show on the road!
Jarrod Chave, Assistant Principal: STEM YEAR 10 STEM TASTER DAY On Friday, 17 February a group of Year 10 students from Aberfoyle Park High School attended a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Taster Day at Flinders University. Students gained an insight into potential STEM career paths and experienced a taste of a range of science, engineering and mathematics workshops such as Zombie Maths, Cooling Gases, Analytical Chemistry, Animal Adaptations and Paleontology. In these workshops, students engaged in activities relating to evolution, animal adaptations, polarity, states of matter as well examining skulls and bones to obtain experiences in the field of paleontology. Throughout the day, students were fortunate enough to hear presentations from the Executive Dean, Professor Martin Westwell and Dr. Sherry Randhawa who shared her expertise in the ever expanding field of robotics. The day was enjoyed by all and students who attended were further enlightened as to the very many opportunities that STEM can provide. THE UNIVERSITY OF ADELAIDE EARLY ENTRY PROGRAM FOR SCIENCES Congratulations to the following Year 12 students who have been accepted into the University of Adelaide’s Early Entry Program for Sciences: Jason Ahumada Ruby Katana Brodie Moran William Roe-Smith Ben Sharman Jordan Steer Xuan Ye Zoe Chandler Mitchell Love Bianca Main Chelsea Zilm Joshua Wright Matthew Lane Ryan Grunwald Brandon Smart This program provides these students with direct entry into a range of Science courses at the University of Adelaide. In order to access this, students need to achieve the minimum ATAR required at the University of Adelaide and complete their SACE. They can apply for and accept entry into other University programs however this program provides them with direct entry into the specified courses. Students were selected based on their Year 12 subject selections, attitude and achievements in Science and Mathematics. In addition, as part of this program, students will participate in a number of information and mentoring sessions provided by the University throughout the year to prepare them for the transition into University studies. All staff at Aberfoyle Park High School wish these students all the best in this program and their future endeavours.

FABULOUS FUN WITH FRINGE @ FLINDERS! On Thursday 4 March 2017 the Year 9 Performing Arts classes, Music, Dance and Drama, were lucky enough to be invited to experience Fringe @ Flinders, a handpicked selection of superb Adelaide Fringe performances. We wondered at acrobatic delights, laughed at comedy acts, and bounced along to some fantastic beats! The Flinders University Student Access Unit offered Aberfoyle Park High School 80 fully funded places at the event, including transport and lunch. Students and teachers spent the morning relaxing in the beautiful Flinders University Plaza, enjoying the five different Fringe performances. This was followed by lunch and an afternoon coordinated by the Inspire Peer Mentor Program, during which students participated in ‘The Amazing Chase’ and a ‘Flash Mentor’ activity. The day was thoroughly enjoyed by all, but especially by Ms Holland, Ms Phillipson, Mr Reece and Ms Andrews, and students had the following to say… Sarah “All together Fringe @ Flinders was an exciting experience. There were so many different types of acts and different varieties. This was interesting because it was fun to see the different talents that people have. It was fun to see what type of acts are at the Fringe and it gave us a hint of what we might like to see if we go to the Fringe.” Tayla “Fringe @ Flinders was completely fantastic! In the morning it was very funny, alive and happy. Nearly everyone around was very much enjoying it, my favourite act out of all of them would have to be Paul Dabek!”
Olivia “My favourite performances were the magician/comedian Paul Dabek as he was funny, enthusiastic and regularly interacted with the audience. I also liked the Space & Time circus performance as it was creative and eye catching.” Indy “[I liked] Reuben Dot Dot Dot, he was amazing, I was surprised with what he did and all the risks he took.

SPORTS DAY The Aberfoyle Park High School Sports Day will be held on Friday 7 April at Flinders University and involve all students from Years 8 to 12. Sports Day is an important whole school event that provides an opportunity for students to participate and have fun together in their House, in an atmosphere of cooperation, teamwork and spirited competition. Dressing up in House colours is encouraged and is one of the highlights of the day. It is an expectation that all students in Years 8 to 12 will attend Sports Day to participate, support and encourage each other to support their House. All lessons on this day, apart from VET courses and SMAF Specialist Mathematics, have been cancelled. Sports Day details: Cost: No cost to families Times: Meet at school by 8.45am. Students will be
provided with information about where to meet.

TERM 1 REPORT DISTRIBUTION AND PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEW EVENING TUESDAY 11 APRIL 2017 You are invited to attend an interview with your son / daughter’s subject teachers on Tuesday 11 April. Teachers will be available for ten minute interviews between 3.00 pm – 8.00 pm. At the interview, teachers will discuss your child’s overall progress and recommend strategies for improvement. Term 1 reports, providing an overview of student’s progress, will be distributed via students on Tuesday 4 April and available on Daymap from Monday 10 April. A letter outlining the organisation of Parent Teacher interviews will be sent home with students during Week 9. You will be able to book your interviews online or by phoning the school. Details in regards to the interview booking process can be found in the letter and on our school website www.aphs.sa.edu.au. A positive partnership between parents, teachers and students is vital in supporting your child’s learning. We thank you in anticipation for meeting with teachers to support your child’s progress and look forward to seeing you on interview evening.
Craig Duguid, Deputy Principal OTCB FOOD BLOGGER On Monday 20 March, Nathan from the Adelaide blog, On The Chopping Board, came and spoke to the Year 9 Home Economics students about food blogging. He spoke about how to be a successful food blog and what is essential to a good blog. For example, he discussed with us the importance of taking good photos and engaging writing for the reader. We learnt about food photography and blog writing techniques. This was Nathan’s first school presentation and I thought he did quite well with a younger audience. The information related to our assignment and helped us in the following weeks write our own food blogs. Our class is currently studying 2017 food trends and food blogging. You can checkout the class blog, 2017 Food Trends, on Edublogs, they will be posted weekly.

CHUO UNIVERSITY JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDY TOUR Aberfoyle Park High School hosted students from Chuo University Junior High School from Friday 17 March to Thursday 23 March. Upon their arrival students were attended a ceremony where they were officially welcomed by the Principal Marion Coady and presented with welcome gifts by Deputy Principal Craig Duguid. As part of their program the Japanese students were involved in lessons in Japanese, English, Science, Home Ecomonics, and HASS. They also attened excursions to the City and Museum and Gorge Wildlife Park. Throughout their stay the students were supported by the Aberfoyle Park High School International Ambassadors who are a group of students from all year levels who have voluntarily committed their time to assist all of our International Visitors. The study tour concluded with a farewell party which was shared with host families and the ambassadors. Aberfoyle Park High School would like to extend thanks and appreciation to the host families who looked after the students during this time and for welcoming them into their families and providing them with a truly memorable experience. Parents or carers of children or young people with a disability are invited to the next in a series of ongoing
forums hosted by the Department for Education and Child Development.
The forum is an opportunity to further build the relationships between families and the Department for
Education and Child Development by listening to your voices and engaging with you about the services and

Parking The Education Development Centre car park is located on Orsmond Street and runs off Milner Street. Parking is available for 180 vehicles. Taxi A complementary Adelaide Independent Taxi phone is located just inside the main entrance.
Bus Bus numbers:150/155/157 from North Terrace leaving the city every 15 minutes to STOP 7 on Port Road. Train Grange or Outer Harbour train to Bowden Station. Tram Alight at the Entertainment Centre heading west for 543m walk to the Education Development Centre.

VACATION CARE FAMILY INFORMATION
FEE STRUCTURE: $46-50 Full Day (Excluding excursions) $26-00 Half Day (Not available on excursion days) 7am – 12.30 or 1.00pm – 6.30pm $58-50 Excursion Days
$52-50 Incursion Days $10-00 Late Booking Fee for bookings received in the last week of Term. A late pick up fee of $5-00 per 5 minutes or part there of applies after 6.30pm
CANCELLATIONS:
Any cancellations received with less than a week’s notice will be charged the Full Day rate. This allows us to alter staff rosters if necessary. Non cancellation will incur a $5-00 fee on top of the full rate for that day. Any refunds will be credited to your account.
ATTENDANCE: Parents/Caregivers must sign the daily attendance record on your child’s arrival and departure. ENROLMENTS & PRIORITY OF ACCESS:
Enrolment forms and medical information must be completed prior to Vacation Care commencing. The program is available to all members of the community, however we will be allocating places according to the Priority of Access Policy.
FOOD/DRINK/MEDICATION:
Please provide recess, lunch and drinks for your child each day unless the program indicates a special lunch provision. A $2-00 surcharge will be added to your account if the Service has to provide bottled water for an excursion day. OSHC will provide breakfast each day prior to 8.30am. Afternoon snack is provided each day and drinking water is always available at the Service. A fridge is available to store your child’s food and drinks to prevent any possibility of contamination. Our OSHC has strict hy-giene procedures and follows Food Safety Guidelines as outlined in the Food Safety Act. Any necessary medication and authorised Action Plan must be supplied each day. OSHC cannot heat up children’s lunches.
CLOTHING AND BELONGINGS:
Please ensure that all items are named. All personal toys and equipment are brought at the owner’s risk. We ask that children wear sensible shoes and T-shirts each day.
HATS AND SUNSCREEN: All children are required to have a sun-smart hat for outside play. We observe the NO HAT – NO PLAY Sun smart Policy from September through to the end of April but recommend a hat is worn on sunny days all year.
ACCOUNTS:
Accounts will be issued each Monday and PAYMENT IN FULL IS REQUIRED WITHIN 7 DAYS. Please pay accounts promptly as we require these funds to operate the program efficiently.
EXCURSIONS:
On excursion days please arrive at least ½ hour before departure. Please send adequate drinks and food, particularly on hot days. Please do not send any spending money unless stated in the program.

VACATION CARE EXCURSION

This form must be completed by a parent/caregiver who has the authority to authorise the taking of a child outside of the Vacation Care Service by OSHC Educators . A parent/caregiver must sign below for each excursion their child/ren are booked to attend. If this form is not adequately completed, the child will not be permitted to attend the excursion/s.
