This town of ours never fails to amaze me.

Over the past few years the warmth of the welcome and quality of our facilities have gone from strength to strength.

In 2016 the town pulled out all the stops after being selected to host the National Eisteddfod, after a gap of one hundred and three years. Nearly 150,000 people from all over the United Kingdom and other Countries visited us, many staying for over a week, and many are now coming back to spend some quality time in a town they found so delightful.

Abergavenny is renowned for Festivals, our Food Festival in September attracts over thirty thousand visitors to join many Celebrity Chefs and food experts for two days of ‘Gourmet Delight’. This event is repeated on a slightly smaller scale at Christmas time.

In May the Steam Rally brings thousands of enthusiasts to Bailey Park a central venue two minutes walk into the town.

In June/July we have our Festival of Cycling which attracts athletes from all over the world, including household names from the Olympics and World Championships.

In August/September the town plays host to the Wall to Wall Jazz Festival, using local venues both large and small, growing in popularity, it has a great future.

National awards galore have been given to our local Hotels and Restaurants well deserved for their fine efforts over the years.

The thriving town is surrounded by mountains and countryside, known for it safe walking and wonderful views. I am often asked when on holiday why are you here when you live in such a magnificent area.

Enjoy your stay, study our history so well displayed throughout the town, enjoy top class accommodation, fine food and drink, along with good shopping. You will surely wish to come back.

Abergavenny Food Festival Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 September

“Family fun, scrumptious food and top chefs are all waiting for you at this year’s food festival”

Activities & Attractions - Abergavenny Food Festival

If you haven’t been before, be sure not to miss another Abergavenny Food Festival. It is one of the few events in Wales where Welsh produce is celebrated alongside some of the biggest names in the world of food. Guest speakers last year included Monica Galetti, José Pizarro and Cyrus Todiwala and this year promises to be just as star studded.

Voted ‘The Best Event in Wales’ (People’s Choice Awards) it is renowned for its vibrant atmosphere, welcoming over 30,000 visitors to the Welsh Borders for a weekend of feasting and castle parties.

The array of markets and producers is so vast that they spill into the streets of the historic town, offering delights for every taste. From artisan cheeses, to organic vegetables and uniquely distilled gins. There’s something to tempt all of your senses.

There are venues all around the town - situated close together - including the famously beautiful Victorian Market Hall which every year takes on a new character with annual themed decorations, created by theatre designer Bettina Reeves and Arts Alive.

For families and children, there’s a tailor made Food Academy on the ancient castle grounds, for budding mini cooks to pick up tips from some of the great chefs who attend the Festival.

Throughout the day the castle grounds are transformed into a hub for creativity and fun with storytelling and live music tucked in between street food vendors, open all hours of the day for those of a hungry disposition. On the Saturday evening the day of celebration comes to a climax with a fantastic party of food, live music and a spectacular firework display (individually ticketed).

In addition to the main market offerings, Abergavenny is unique for its special events. There are individually ticketed Masterclasses, Tutored Tastings and Talks, hosted by some of the most talented, knowledgeable and exciting specialists in the field. In addition, wristband holders are treated to a rolling programme of chef demonstrations in the Market Hall.

Wristband tickets give entry to the main markets and the castle, all children under 16 go free with a paying adult. Join us to celebrate this award winning atmosphere and to be stimulated by sounds, tastes and smells, invite your friends and family or come alone and be warmly welcomed by the Welsh hospitality.

Some of the headline event tickets will go on sale in May with the full programme available at the beginning of July.

For the full ingredients visit abergavennyfoodfestival.com and sign up to the newsletter to get the latest news and updates from the Festival.

Blaenavon (meaning Source of River) was the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. The town and its Industrial Landscape were awarded World Heritage Site Status by UNESCO in 2000 for the leading role played by the area in the Industrial Revolution during the 19th Century.

The perfect place to begin a visit is the Blaenavon World Heritage Centre located in two beautifully restored former industrial schools, built by the Ironmasters in the early 19th Century. Both the exhibition and the Tourist Information Centre staff will introduce visitors to the attractions and activities in the area, which can be reached either by car or by walking. Explore the interactive displays to find out why the area was the perfect location for the iron industry to thrive.

Attractions include the Blaenavon Ironworks, built in 1789; you can view the extensive remains of the blast furnaces, cast houses and the impressively restored Water Balance Tower. New cutting-edge audio technology helps bring the story of Blaenavon Ironworks to life like never before.

Visit the Big Pit National Coal Museum and go 300 feet underground with a real miner and see what life was like for the thousands of men who worked at the coal face.

A visit to the World Heritage Site is never complete until you have visited Blaenavon Heritage Town. Explore the town by downloading the “Blaenavon Digital Passport” App and follow the trail which introduces you to the important buildings and landmarks which tell the story of the town’s industrial heritage.

There are many ways to explore the Blaenavon World Heritage Site. Walkers can explore the Blaenavon Industrial Landscape by following one of the many leafleted walks that make up the Blaenavon Walks Pack, including the iconic Iron Mountain Trail and the Whistle Stop Tour.

Experience a train ride on the Blaenavon Heritage Railway, taking in views of the spectacular mountain top landscape; sample some local ale at the Rhymney Brewery Visitor Centre; and enjoy a trip on the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal, which passes through the World Heritage Site, offering cruises on canal boats or walks along the towpath.

The friendly staff at the Tourist Information Centre, located within the Blaenavon World Heritage Centre will be happy to help you plan your visit. For further information, opening times of attractions, details of events and walks leaflets, please visit www.visitblaenavon.co.uk, or telephone 01495 742333.

Explore the Blaenavon World Heritage Site - a jewel in the crown of the South Wales Valleys, this 33 square kilometre site is home to a wide range of attractions, activities and events for all the family to enjoy, all located within 5 minutes of each other, with the majority of attractions offering FREE entry!

Exploring Abergavenny’s Outdoor Gems

38

The Linda Vista Gardens are right in the centre of Abergavenny, less than five minutes walk from the Market Hall. They are public gardens, a source of delight and peace to everyone who visits them. They are open every day, and contain rare specimen trees, interesting shrubs, colourful seasonal flower beds, the Civic Society’s Millennium Path and sculptures relating to the town’s history and social activities. Linda Vista means “Beautiful View” in Spanish.

The house and gardens date from 1875. Abergavenny Borough Council bought the house and gardens in 1957, extended the gardens, and planted an enlightened choice of trees (Corkscrew Hazel, Monkey Puzzle, Foxglove tree, Twisted Willow, Indian Bean tree, Dawn Redwood) to augment venerable trees planted in the 19th century (Holm Oaks, London Planes). The original semi-formal garden is easily identified by being bordered with box hedging, a common feature of Victorian gardens.

Since 2008, a Friends’ Group has added new focus and direction to the Gardens. They won grants for boardwalks to replace dangerous steps and a path prone to flooding, so making the Gardens accessible for buggies and wheelchairs. There is now a play area for small children with sawn logs as stepping stones, a table and chairs carved from a tree trunk and a living willow tunnel. Old, tired rose beds have been filled with colour-themed

flowers and ornamental grasses, and a new Autumn-colour tree collection has been sponsored by local people, which will become a glory in years to come. More information: 01873 737671, Twitter: @LINDAVISTAGDNS

Explore the award-winning Castle Meadows. Set against a magnificent mountain backdrop and the River Usk, the Castle Meadows site is located just a short stroll from Abergavenny town centre. With its copses, streams and ponds, the 20-hectare floodplain is a natural wonderland, home to a wide diversity of wildlife and plants, and a delight for visitors and residents.

It’s an important green space for the bustling market town, the place where the River Gavenny – which gives the town its name – joins the River Usk, gaining wider recognition in 2016 as the main venue for the National Eisteddfod of Wales.

Crossed by footpaths and a cycle path, the meadows attract keep fit fans as well as fishermen and geocaching enthusiasts, and it’s a favourite spot for families enjoying the open-air or exercising their dogs. For part of the year, cattle graze the land.

Glimpses of the town’s rich history can be seen among the glorious views with Abergavenny Castle on one side and a river bridge first built in medieval times on another.

Not only has the town of Abergavenny a wealth of independent shops, businesses, restaurants and cafes and historical sites, it is blessed with amazing public gardens, meadows and parks.

Owned by Monmouthshire County Council, the site is managed by volunteers from the Friends of Castle Meadows with the council’s Countryside Service. Their work has won yet another coveted Green Flag award from Keep Wales Tidy. A ‘Young Friends’ group has been set up for schools. So far, 324 different species have been recorded in ‘bioblitz’ days.

Discover what birds, butterflies and plants you can see or join a themed walk with expert guides. The Friends hold seasonal work parties planting native species - and getting rid of the invasive ones.

The Meadows are a disability friendly area. Scooters and wheelchairs are available at Abergavenny Shopmobility located in the Castle Street Car Park. Entrances near the town centre can be found from the Byfield Lane Car Park, the bridge at Llanfoist and a path below the Castle in Mill Street.

The surrounding hills provide an attractive backdrop to Bailey Park which is situated in the centre of Abergavenny adjacent to Fairfield car park and with entrances on each of its aspects. This lovely green space with its large number of mature trees is an important historical site within the town. It is a focus for local sports activities, annual cultural events and general personal enjoyment.

A children’s play area, well sited seating and a quiet sensory garden area created and funded through the efforts of Friends of Bailey Park provide interest and help to promote wellbeing for all age groups. The Swan Meadows were originally known as the “Tenter Fields”. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Abergavenny had a flourishing flannel industry, centred (not surprisingly) on Flannel Street itself. The town was especially famous for its red flannel shirts, which were very popular with local farm labourers and iron-workers and miners in the neighbouring industrial

valleys. Flannel made very durable and hard-wearing clothing and was also believed to prevent fevers and pneumonia!

As part of the flannel-making process, damp lengths of flannel were hung on wooden frames called “tenters” to prevent them from shrinking as they dried. The tenters were set up on convenient pieces of land, often near rivers, called “tenter-fields”. The cloth was held in place on the tenters by rows of small hooks – known, naturally enough, as tenterhooks. This is the origin of the phrase “on tenterhooks”!

The meadows originally included the area now covered by the bus station and car parks and reached as far as the Priory. At the north-west end of the meadows, on the boundary with the Priory, stood Ffynnon Fair (“Mary’s Well”). This was also known as the “Holy Well” – it was reputed to have healing qualities and gave its name to Holywell Road.

The Swan Meadows are crossed by the river Gavenny, of course, and there is also evidence for the weirs across the river that once sent water along races to the mills that gave Mill Street its name. In the 13th century, there were two mills known as the King’s Mill and the Lord’s Mill. The meadows are also now the home of the Gorsedd Circle that was originally erected near the Monmouth Road to mark the first visit of the National Eisteddfod to Abergavenny in 1913.
