DAY 3 DYDD

ABERTOIR

Review: FiredBy Nia Edwards-Behi

Fired is a rare beast: an Indian horror film.

Embracing a modern, business-minded India,

the film is certainly derivative. Bollywood is a

film industry that thrives on putting its own

spin on things we’ve seen before. So yes, that

ghost does look awfully like the long-haired

spirits of Japanese horror! Regardless, Fired is

a strong film, carried by a strong performance

from Rahul Bose, who spends most of the film

on his own. An interesting and entertaining, if

not ground-breaking, film.

Review: AmerBy Nia Edwards-Behi

Like all the best gialli, Amer is a sensuous,

vague meandering into a twisted world.

Depicting three moments in a woman’s life,

the film is delightfully auto-erotic, and yet is

coolly detached even in its closest of close-

ups. A visual and aural feast, Amer is much

more than a simple homage: it’s a work of art.

Daily PicksBy Rebekah Smith

Well, I think today could be

my favourite Abertoir day

(though to be honest every

day is fab).

At 3.15pm we are screening

the visually stunning and

hypnotic Amer. !is is my

second favourite film of 2010

(come and find me to

discover what number one

is). I can’t begin to describe

the many reasons why you

shouldn’t miss it but in

addition there will also be a

presentation before the

screening by Dr Mikel Koven.

Mikel is an expert on the the

giallo sub-genre (he’s written

plenty of academic stuff on it

after all).

In addition, we have the UK

premieres of two very

interesting indie films, one

from India and one from the

USA.

Fired begins the day at 11am

telling the tale of a CEO who

wishes he never sacked his

staff.

Wake is a very David-Lynch

esque film and screens at

1pm which is one of my

Cannes discoveries. !e

films’ star Josh Stewart is

indeed a very attractive man

but more importantly, for

everyone else, his

performance is superb.

At 8.15pm we head to the

Great Hall for !e Damned

live in concert. I’m really

looking forward to this event,

as I’ll admit that I’m a

‘Damned virgin’ (god that

sounds odd when you say it

out loud) as I’ve never seen

them live before. However,

this is their first gig in

Aberystwyth for 25 years with

the very cool Captain

Sensible in attendance. !ey

will be supported by the

legendary Zombina who did a

smashing gig for us last year.

Finally, whatever you do DO

NOT miss !e House on

Haunted Hill at 6pm ;)

IMDB Trivia: William Castle

He purchased the film rights to

Ira Levin's novel "Rosemary's

Baby", but Paramount Pictures

would give him the green light

for the project only if he didn't

direct--the studio feared that

his reputation as a director of

low-budget gimmick horror

films would harm the project.

Roman Polanski was finally

selected to direct while Castle,

as producer, was allowed to

make a significant cameo

appearance.

Today’s Schedule

Fired 11.00amUK PREMIERE

Cornered in a deserted office, Joy discovers a supernatural force hell-bent on extracting

revenge. A film that caused controversy in India, this is a fascinating movie that plays out in

real-time.

Wake 1.00pmUK PREMIERE

Driving to a wedding in LA through the Mojave Desert, Paul and Adrienne pull off the highway

and into Roy’s Motel and Café. !e roadside artifact’s strange mix of travelers force the couple

to discover a horrifying secret.

Amer 3.15pmPLUS GIALLO TALK BY DR MIKEL KOVEN

A unique homage to giallo, this visual trip through the aesthetics of the genre taps into its very

psyche. Following the girl Ana through three phases in her life (childhood, adolescent and

adult), it is a film driven by the experience of being seen.

The House on Haunted Hill 6.00pm

What Abertoir festival is complete without our unofficial patron saint Vincent Price making an

appearance? A rich millionaire (Price) invites a group of people to his mansion with the

promise that if they survive the night, they will receive $10,000.

The Damned 8.15pmSUPPORTED BY ZOMBINA & THE SKELETONES

Legendary British punk rock group !e Damned will be tearing Aberystwyth apart in this special

live concert! We look forward to welcoming David Vanian (Vocals), Captain Sensible (Guitar &

Vocals), Pinch (Drums), Monty Oxy Moron (Keyboards) and Stu West (Bass) for one night only!

For more details, buy your Festival Programme at the festival reception.
