    Introduction

ABILITIESmeConference is an integral part of theABILITIESmeCongress (that includes the MinisterialMeetings, the Workshops, the Parents Programmes andthe Academic/Health Laboratories) and is held under thetheme: N.E.E.D: Nurturing, Enabling and Empowering people

    with Disabilities

ABILITIESmeConference programme strives to reinforceattendees perceptions of the tremendous potential ofpeople with disabilities and their collective ability to inspireby reaching new heights, new strengths and new victoriesin every aspect of community life.

The United Nations estimates one billion people withdisabilities in the world and that one fifth of whichoriginates from the MENA region. This merits an open andhonest discussion on the progress made, the optionscreated and perspectives open for people with disabilities.

ABILITIESme Conference is founded on the belief that aninclusive society allows all its members to contributesignificantly in its development.

Disability management - from a policy, accessibility, healthcare, education or employment point of views is auniversal challenge.

For decades, industrialised nations, developing countriesand emerging economies like the United Arab Emirates, -the host of ABILITIESme- have been making tremendousstrides in order to propose societal agendas that eliminatediscrimination and exclusion, promote inclusion, protect the

rights and ensure equal opportunities for people withdisabilities.

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Peoplewith Disabilities (CRPD) has enacted a specific set of goalsthat engaged the global community to achieve oftime-bound social targets for all disparate actors of thecommunity and the establishment of a strategic frameworkanchored in an explicit partnership between NGOs andgovernment agencies.

ABILITIESmeConference presents a unique chance for anin-depth discussion on:

Regional and local implementation of the CRPD whilstalso evaluating disabilities trends (emerging, current anddefunct),

Multi-disciplinary review of the implementation sovereignprogrammes on disabilities

Mapping out of responsibilities for government agenciesregarding the economic, social, education and professionalempowerment of people with disabilities.

    ABILITIESmeConference proposes an insightful outlookinto six key themes;

Special needs education and inclusive education

Health access, assisted living and independent living

    Accessibility and universal design

    Social inclusion and support

    Empowerment through employment

    Sustainable policy development

The conference explores, from a strategic vantage point, the factors that contribute to the social, economic, careerdevelopment and health empowerment of people withdisabilities (PWD).

Set for the first time in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates,ABILITIESmeConference strives to gather internationalperspectives, regional expertises and local know-how to

address a universal challenge: the empowerment of themost vulnerable citizens in any social group, community andcountry.

While giving an impetus to the UAE/GCC disabilitiesawareness efforts, ABILITIESmeConference is a globalarena for discussions. ABILITIESmeConference is both anactive call to action as it is an academic reflection on thebest practices in special needs education or creativeinitiatives designed to enhance the social and professionalinclusion of individuals considered to be on the fringe ofsociety due to their physical, intellectual or communicationimpairments.

With a set of thought provoking keynote presentations, comprehensive case studies assessing progress made ineducational curriculums globally, perspectives ondisability-friendly policies, outlook on career options andaccessibility measures.

ABILITIESme Conference is slated to establish quantifiablebenchmarks adaptable at any levels and capable ofgenerating a realistic and progressive agenda for theempowerment of people with disabilities and special needs.

ABILITIESmeConference will also provide an outlook for

international, regional and local public-private/NGOpartnership to help assess the sustainability of current orplanned collaboration between governments /authoritiesand constituents in disability issues management.

The conference will conclude with a set ofrecommendations derived from the discussions andconstitute a tangible framework that will measure progressmade or challenges to be overcome.

    amenities are available onsite.

ADNEC has wheelchairs available for daily or event hire for up to a maximum of 6 hours per day from the ADNEC First Aid Point adjacent

    to Hall 8 concourse.

Any request to use the ADNEC wheel chairs to be directed to the ADNEC first aid Point in hall 8 concourse area via email adnecfox@g-

    In Abu Dhabi

    At ADNEC

In Abu Dhabi regulations based on international standards that came into effect in January 2011 require all new buildings to be accessible

    for residents with disabilities.

The codes include mandates for the maximum incline of ramps, the width of doorways and hallways and the height of necessities such as

    fire alarms and thermostats.

Abu Dhabi Municipality has made great strides in tackling accessibility issues for new construction and development projects.
