DAY 3 Hanoi, Vietnam Upon arrival inHanoi, Vietnam’s capital, transfer to the HanoiHilton Hotel at the heart of the city. Smaller, qui-eter, and more dignified than modern Ho ChiMinh City, Hanoi looks much like a provincialFrench hamlet. Enjoy the remainder of your dayand evening at leisure, exploring this delightfulcity independently and at your own pace.

DAY 4 Hanoi/Haiphong (Embark), VietnamJoin a morning tour that begins in the tranquil BaDinh district to see the site of Ho Chi Minh’smausoleum and the simple, austere cottage thatthe revolutionary leader preferred to the opu-lence of the presidential palace. Following aleisurely lunch, enjoy a walking tour of the OldQuarter. See the Ngoc Son Pagoda and theancient “36 Streets” district, a maze of narrow,tree-shaded lanes named for the crafts practicedby ancient artisan guilds. Late this afternoon,transfer to Haiphong for embarkation of the Clipper Odyssey.

Thisafternoon, arrive at Cat Ba Island — home toVietnam’s most beautiful landscapes and diverseecosystems, including a primeval forest, water-falls, limestone lakes, and hot springs. More than600 types of plants flourish on the island, whilethe marine zone surrounding it supports sea tur-tles, oysters, lobsters, and dolphins.

DAY 6 Cruising the Gulf of Tonkin/Vinh Moc,Vietnam Relax this morning on the decks of the Clipper Odyssey, sailing the Gulf of Tonkin.Then, in Vinh Moc, tour the maze of under-ground tunnels dug by residents when the villagewas destroyed by bombs in 1965 during theVietnam War. The villagers lived in the tunnelsthroughout the remainder of the conflict.

DAY 7 Chan May (for Hue), Vietnam Dockin Chan May and join a full-day excursion to theformer imperial city of Hue. Bisected by the Per-

fume River and eight miles inland from the ChinaSea in the foothills of the Annimite Mountains,Hue has an illustrious history. Visit the imperialtombs of the Nguyen dynasty emperors, set amidtranquil lakes, ornate buildings, fragrant gar-dens, and hunting grounds.

After a leisurely lunch, tour the imperial Citadel,designed to resemble Beijing’s Forbidden City;and the Heavenly Lady Pagoda, Vietnam’s mostfamous Mahayana Buddhist temple and a train-ing center for young monks. The seven-tieredpagoda overlooks the Perfume River and featuresa bonsai garden quietly tended by novices.

DAY 8 Da Nang, Vietnam Enjoy a panoram-ic overview of Da Nang today en route to theUNESCO World Heritage Site of My Son val-ley, the cradle of the Cham religion in Vietnam.This sacred place encompasses several groupsof exquisitely carved stone towers and sanctuar-ies constructed between the seventh and 13th

DAY 9 Qui Nhon, Vietnam Dock today atQui Nhon, located along the emerald-huedSouth China Sea on Vietnam’s scenic centralcoast. Explore remnants of the Cham Empire dur-ing a visit to the ruins just outside the city. Thencontinue to the Quang Trung Museum for ademonstration of traditional Vo Tay Son martialarts; return to Qui Nhon over a narrow bridgethat affords a wonderful view of Long KhanPagoda with its towering Buddha.

DAY 10 Expedition Cruising in Port Dayot/Nha Trang, Vietnam Use our fleet of Zodiacsfor expedition cruising off Port Dayot, visiting a

tiny fishing village and join-ing naturalists for a walkthrough the sand dunes sur-rounding this picturesquebay. This afternoon, cruise toNha Trang, one of Vietnam’sbest-known resort towns,where you can stroll alongmagnificent beaches andrelax at the edge of brilliantturquoise waters. A city tourintroduces you to NhaTrang’s colonial architectureand the Po Nagar Towers —a Cham site, built betweenthe seventh and 12th cen-turies, that is still a place of worship today. DAY 11 Nha Trang/Cruising the South ChinaSea Snorkel along the coral reef at Hou MienIsland this morning and use Zodiac landing craftto explore close to the shoreline. Then cruisethrough the scenic waters of the South ChinaSea later today.

DAY 12 Cruising the Saigon River/Ho ChiMinh City, Vietnam Cruise up the SaigonRiver, arriving in Ho Chi Minh City midmorning.This vibrant metropolis reflects Vietnam’s past inits broad colonial boulevards flanked by impres-sive French-colonial stucco buildings. Exploreone of two distinct aspects of Vietnam on alter-nate excursions today. The Clipper Odyssey offers amenities you would expect to find aboard a luxury yacht. All-outside staterooms average agenerous 186 square feet in size; each features a sitting area, lower twin or queen-size beds, shower/tub in bath-room, refrigerator, television, and telephone. Superb, prepared-to-order cuisine is served at single open seatings in theelegant dining room. Two lounges, a cozy library, small gym, and beauty salon contribute to your comfort, and an ele-vator provides access to all passenger cabin decks. Outside, you’ll find a small pool and jogging track. Clipper main-tains a no-smoking policy in the interior passenger areas of the ship. Smoking is permitted on the outside decks.
