Your Mind,
Your Learning
Hi, I’m Venessa Curnow. I’m on thereference group for the Aboriginal andTorres Strait Islander Rural and RemoteTraining Project. I want to introducemyself to the students, service providers
and trainers.
I’m Ait Koedal and Sumu. My backgroundis a registered nurse working in Aboriginaland Torres Strait Islander aged care andhealth in various positions in cities, rural
and remote areas.
Now I work as National Aboriginal andTorres Strait Islander Liaison Officer,Alzheimer’s Australia, and as a Director
with the National Congress of Australia’s
First People.
Learning is great for your mind, it’s aprotective factor to keep your mind
healthy.
Your mind is more than just chemicals and
messages in your physical brain. Your mind, isyour spirit, motivation, relationships, emotionsand much more. Keeping your mind strongand healthy, also helps to keep your whole
body healthy.
Everyone is learning and teaching every day, it’snot new, we are doing it all the time. So if something seems hard, just ask questions orask for it to be explained in a different way till
you understand it.
One of the best parts about learning, is applyingwhat you’ve learnt to your work. Using what
you have learnt when caring for Aboriginal andTorres Strait Islander old people or peoplewith disabilities. This is a way of how learningalso helps your motivation, relationships and
emotions.
Gaining more skills also helps with more jobsfor Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoplein aged care and long term care specialities. With certificates of attainment in nationallyrecognised qualifications in aged care andcommunity services your job opportunitiesgrow, and communities capacity to provide
services grow.

Woorabinda Multi-Purpose Health Service
Students at Woorabinda Multi-Purpose HealthService recently learnt about communicationskills. This included aspects of ‘following writteninstructions to complete a task’ as part of units
CHCCS411A or CHCCOM403A.
Students identified a range of issues that impactedon their individual and group communicationmethods and had fun while putting together their
construction.
