Aborigines believe that the world was created in Dreamtime. They tell stories to explain how the world, the plants and the animals were made. When
they told these stories a long time ago Aboriginals often drew pictures or symbols in the sand or on rocks.

A long, long time ago the earth was dark. There was no light. It was cold and dark. The clouds were so low the animals had to crawl around. The emu was bent over, the kangaroo couldn’t hop and the birds couldn’t fly. The wombat was so fed up that he dug a burrow and went to sleep.
Only the snakes were happy.

and the sky flew up high. It split open and the world was filled with light and warmth. It was the first sunrise. All the animals were delighted. The magpies sang and the animals jumped with joy.
