Overdue Books Thank you to the students and their families who have found books at home and returned them to the library. In the last two weeks we have had two books returned that students have had at home for more than a year. We really appreciate the return of these books. Keep looking. Students who have overdue books are not allowed to borrow. We want all children to be able to read some of the awesome books we have in our library.

Book Club Book Club orders close this Friday 9th November. Orders should be back by the 16th November. There will be one more issue before the end of the year.

What’s happening in the library at DSPS? The library is open before school from 9.00 – 9.20 and at lunch break each day. The library is very popular with students wanting to escape the heat to read, use computers and chat with friends. Students are able to return and borrow before school and at lunch break. Students are asked to have a library bag to protect our books from drink bottles and food in their bags. Stage 2 are learning about neighbouring countries, lifestyles, population and the economy of different countries. Last week they looked at population and currencies. Stage 1 students are learning about Australia. Some students are able to name all states and territories and capital cities. Students use books and the internet to research topics and questions. They are learning to select key words from what they read and use these to write the information in their own words. They are becoming more familiar with copyright and searching for suitable websites. Keep smiling, Sue Buttrey, Teacher Librarian

Year 2 Swimming

Year 2 Swimming Assessment Day is Week 5, Wednesday 14th November. Please remember to hand in your permission and medical note as well as $5.50 by Monday 5th November. The 2 week swimming program will run from Monday 19th November to Friday 30th November. Remaining $55 to be paid by Monday 12th November. Students will need to bring their swimmers, rash shirt or t-shirt, a towel, a hat and sunscreen in a labelled bag. Thongs may be worn to and from the pool; however school shoes and full uniform must be worn at school. Please remember, no CANTEEN ORDERS between 19th and 30th November.

Thank You A huge thank you to the generous children, families, friends and staff that have donated to Operation Christmas Child program this year. It is so lovely to see our kids be proud and excited, carefully carrying their red and green shoebox full of goodies, for a child in need. This year we collected 250 boxes to send to under privileged children. On Thursday children from 5/6C helped Mrs Sylvia Paice load the boxes ready for transportation to Sydney which will then be distributed to children in the Philippines. This has been such a worthwhile activity that encourages so many of life’s important lessons. To see the joy on the faces of our kids when they know they have helped someone else has been beautiful. It has also taught our kids to be grateful and thankful for what they have. Mrs Prince

Aboriginal Science Show Jollybops Science Shows are coming to Dubbo South Primary School to present science shows for all students from K-6. Each show aims to bring science alive through exciting, stimulating and interactive science demonstrations. This show entitled “Flight, Sound and Fire – Science with an Aboriginal Perspective" essentially looks at the scientific principles behind some of the great inventions and environmental understandings of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. Students will discover the science behind the Boomerang. Learn about the science of sound and the Didgeridoo (Yidaki). Find out about the inventions of the great Aboriginal Scientist (face on the $50 note) David Unaipon and discover how Indigenous Peoples of the Northern Territory today are helping cut greenhouse gases with their Caring for Country Fire Management Practices. All of these concepts are presented with student interaction in all demonstrations. A fun, musical and enlightening show with great work booklets to help integrate Indigenous understanding and Science concepts into our schools curricula. Jollybops would like to acknowledge advice received from Indigenous educators in developing this show.

Music Count Us In 2018 Last Thursday Dubbo South celebrated the wonderful gift of music as part of the national program Music Count Us In. The program began 12 years ago to remind students and teachers the value of music. Music brings people together and makes us feel like we belong – it gives us a sense of community. Music also builds confidence, teaches self –discipline, encourages creativity, requires cooperation and is great fun. Kindergarten to Year 6 assembled in the hall to sing the song “One Song” written by Justine Clarke and 5 students. It involved over ½ million students singing the same song, at the same time, on the same day all around Australia. It was a wonderful afternoon where we also took the opportunity to sing a number of other songs including: Where is Thumbkin? as an old fashioned round, The Mowgli’s I’m Good, A Million Dreams and This is Me - two very popular songs from the musical The Greatest Showman. Themes that were touched upon were resilience, gratitude, positivity and unity. During lessons leading up to this assembly lyrics were analysed, melodies and actions were learnt and the true meaning of the messages behind the songs were understood. Mrs Alexandra Prince

5/6L and 5/6C News Last Friday Year 6’s from 5/6L and 5/6C planted native, drought hardy plants in the garden in front of their classrooms. We planted Eremophilas, Bottle Brush, Kangaroo Paw, Grevilleas and native grasses. We worked hard planting in the heat and learnt about our native plants, as we went. Things we learnt whilst gardening included eromophila means desert lover; how different leaves on plants help them to retain moisture; how to find the front and back of a plant and the best ones to attract birds and bees. This could not have happened without Miss Constable teaching and supporting us in learning about Australian natives. We also want to thank Mr Edmunds for helping us. Mali and Jia-Rong 5/6L
