About BRG’s Commitment As part of our long-term commitment to the environment, as of July 2018, BRG will no longer offer plastic straws or plastic stirrers in 8 of our locations. BRG is among the first on Long Island to make the company-wide commitment to go straw-less. With multiple water front restaurants, the commitment naturally ties into our already deep connection to the oceans and bays. As plastic straws are commonly used for only few minutes in a restaurant setting before being thrown away, they can easily end up in the bays, harbors, and oceans causing major damage to the ecosystem. According to Greenpeace, 40% of plastics in the ocean come from single-use items. With over 28 billion pounds of plastic in the oceans each year, BRG, and its customers, can begin to make a difference. #stopsucking with BRG On July 24th, we will be launching a social media campaign to promote our stop sucking program. With the help of 20 of Long Islands top food influencers, we will collectively kick off our effort in an attempt to reach over 60,000 Long Islander’s simultaneously. Our Partnership with Half Shells for Habitat In January, BRG began a partnership with Seatuck Environmental Association, a local environmental group, to participate in Half Shells for Habitat, Long Island’s first cooperative Oyster Shell Recycling Program. Seatuck is dedicated to restoring wild oysters and creating a healthy marine habitat for Long Island wildlife. “Our partnership with Seatuck is just the beginning of our plan to save the estuaries Long Island is so well known for,” says Kurt Bohlsen, co-owner of The Bohlsen Restaurant Group. Thus far we have donated over a half ton of shells from Bohlsen Restaurant Group. Our Conservationist Commitment What’s next: BRG, in partnership with https://www.seatuck.org and http://www.amseas.org, is planning a beach clean-up day for September. Further details to come.
