Since 1922, CSM has been a gateway to higher education leading to university transfer, career preparation and ad- vancement, and professional and per- sonal development. The College currently serves approximately 10,000 day, eve- ning and weekend students. CSM students reflect the diversity of the Bay Area and have a range of educational goals. To best serve our students, the curriculum offers a wealth of programs that include traditional, semester-length and short courses in addition to distance education. Students can experience a vibrant campus life to complement classroom learning that includes leadership development, student government, more than 20 student clubs and edu- cational and cultural activities. CSM is proud of its champi- onship intercollegiate athletic teams which compete at the highest community college level. Many student-athletes re- ceive scholarships and continue at four-year institutions and numerous CSM athletes have gone on to professional careers. To ensure student success, CSM offers a comprehensive selec- tion of academic support services. Resources include finan- cial aid and scholarships, counseling, transfer services, tutor- ing, employment assistance, health services and child care, among many others. The ProgramThe Group Fitness Instructor Certificate Program at College of San Mateo prepares students to teach group exercise classes. Students who complete the program will have the knowledge and experience to pass a Group Fitness Certification Test. Upon completing the program and passing this test, students will be able to teach at health clubs, fitness centers, and privately owned fitness studios. Students in this program will learn the foundations of knowledge and skills necessary to teach a safe and effective group fitness class, no matter the type of modality. This includes:

• Anatomy• Class Design• Exercise Physiology• Injury Prevention• Instructional Techniques• Kinesiology

Program RequirementsSix units are required to complete the CSM Group Fitness Certification Program:

Denaya has had a long and lov-ing relationship with move-ment. She received her MFA from Mills College in dance and her BFA from UCLA in world arts and cultures. She loves teach-ing at College of San Mateo and has been a kinesiology, athletics

and dance faculty member since 2009.

Denaya has taught group fitness classes at community col-leges, private studios, fitness gyms, and has lead work-shops all over California. She is a Yoga Alliance® Experi-enced Registered Yoga Teacher – 200 hours, and Registered Yoga Teacher - 500 hours. She is assistant coach to the CSM football team, working to increase the players’ flexibility and breath awareness through yoga practice.

Denaya is delighted to be leading the Group Fitness Instruc-tor Certification Program at College of San Mateo. She feels honored for the opportunity to share her knowledge of and passion for group fitness with those who share her enthusiasm.

About the American Council on Exercise® (ACE)Once the Group Fitness Certification Program has been completed, students have the option of paying an extra fee to take the ACE Group Fitness Certification Test. If passed, the student will become a registered Group Fitness Instructor through ACE.

Over the past 25 years, ACE has become the largest nonprofit fitness certification, education and training organization in the world with nearly 50,000 certified professionals who hold more than 55,000 ACE certifications.
