5.3.2 Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is naturally present in very few foods, added to others,

and available as a dietary supplement. It is also produced endogenously when ultraviolet rays

from sunlight strike the skin and trigger vitamin D synthesis.

Vitamin D is essential for promoting calcium absorption in the gut and maintaining adequate

serum calcium and phosphate concentrations to enable normal mineralization of bone and

prevent hypocalcemic tetany. It is also needed for bone growth and bone remodeling by

osteoblasts and osteoclasts. Without sufficient vitamin D, bones can become thin, brittle, or

misshapen. Vitamin D sufficiency prevents rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults.

Together with calcium, vitamin D also helps protect older adults from osteoporosis.

5.3.2.1 Market Trends

The Market for Vitamin D in Bangladesh was valued at INR 924 Lakhs in 2009. This market

exhibited a CAGR sales growth of 19% between 2005 and 2009. There was decline in the total

volumes in 2006 and 2008, the decline in volumes, however, was offset by an increase in the

average unit prices.

5.3.2.2 Market Segmentation by Molecule

Calcitriol was the leading Vitamin D molecule in Bangladesh accounting for 70% of the total

sales and 96% of the total Vitamin D volumes. Drug Internationals Dicaltrol and Roche’s

Rocaltrol were the leading Calcitriol brands accounting for more than 90% of the total sales in

2009.

Colecalciferol represented the second most popular molecule and accounted for a 29% sales

and 3% volume share. The drugs high sales despite its relatively ordinary volumes suggest that

it is more expensive than the other two Vitamin molecules. There are presently four

Colecalciferol brands available in the Bangladesh with Recordati’s Vitamin D3 Rcdt and

Incepta Pharma’s Osteo-D representing the leading brands.

Alfacalcidol accounted for around only 1% of the total Vitamin D sales and volume in 2009.

Leo Pharma’s One Alpha is the only brand currently available in this market.

5.3.2.3 Competitive Landscape

There are currently nine players operating in the Vitamin D market in Bangladesh. The

market, however, is essentially a duopoly with Drug International and Roche accounting for a

combined 66% of the total sales and 85% of the total volumes in the market.

Drug International was the segment’s biggest player with a sales share of 37% and a volume

share of 53% in 2009. Dicaltrol is the company’s leading brand accounting for most of the

company’s sales in this segment followed by Calcirol which the company launched in 2009.

Drug International was followed by Roche which accounted for 29% sales and 32% of the total

market volumes in 2009.
