WELCOME MES SAGESDear colleagues,
It is a great pleasure to present the nal programme for the 2019 IPA/SEPG Joint International Congress and to extend greetings to all of you.
The Congress motto re ects both the spirit of this city and the essence of IPA. Since the Middle Ages innumerable have been the pilgrims who crossed Europe to reach Santiago, walking from the East through the French Way, by boat from the North, the English Way, or by the Portuguese Way from the South. Many pathways, walkers with di erent cultures converging on a common goal, contributing thus to outline the concept of the future Europe.
Few places in the world can better symbolize the aspiration of the IPA to constitute the agora in which the wide range of professionals necessary to improve the mental health of the elderly can be expressed. Activities as varied as basic research, clinical care, prevention; targeting proposals valid both for the people who live in their homes or in the di erent types of residential institutions (the kind we know today and those still waiting to be invented). In short, the IPA as a protective umbrella for professionals and a catalyst for knowledge.
In this context, you are invited to “pilgrimage” with your best baggage and share your knowledge and your illusions in the friendliest atmosphere. The venue of the Congress is the noble building of the Faculty of Medicine, at the full disposal of the Congress, in the historic campus of the ve-hundred-year-old University of Santiago de Compostela.
The collaboration of a vast array of scienti c societies, from Spain and other countries, with a broad Scienti c Committee, led by John O’Brien, has ensured the con guration of a programme of excellence, which has been enriched by your contributions and undoubtedly re ects the interdisciplinary model of the IPA.
On behalf of the IPA and the SEPG, Welcome to Santiago de Compostela!
Raimundo Mateos IPA 2010 International

Dear Colleagues and friends
I am delighted to welcome you to our meeting in Santiago de Compostela. We have not joined together since our meeting in San Francisco and I am eager to re-connect with old friends and to meet new ones.
Our meeting theme: “Diversity in research informing excellence in clinical care” highlights our commitment to a multi-disciplinary approach to providing the best mental health care to aging populations across the globe. As I complete my tenure as president, I welcome you to this important meeting where we have brought together clinicians and researchers from around the world and from a range of professions and perspectives to provide a uniquely informed view of how we can provide the best care to our patients. I am particularly proud of the training activities, the workshops, and the opportunity for junior investigators to meet our seasoned clinicians and scientists. These activities ful ll the essence of the IPA mission of supporting those professionals who serve aging populations. Many people have worked to create this excellent program and I want to make special mention of our program chairs, John O’Brien, Henry Brodaty, and Gwenn Smith. This international team, with many volunteers giving of their time, has created a rich experience I know we will all appreciate. Also, this meeting could not happen without the local e orts of our collaborative meeting sponsor, Sociedad Espanola de Psicogeriatria (SEPG). I want to thank Dr Manuel Franco, SEPG president for his incredible support and e orts to make this meeting happen. Finally, my sincere gratitude to Raymundo Mateos, our immediate past president who has mentored me through this important activity. These two men have provided great leadership as Co-Chairs to create this stimulating agenda.
So, thank you all for joining us and welcome to a very exciting meeting
Mary Sano, PhDPresident, IPA

GENERAL INFORMATION
About Santiago de Compostela
The city has a current population of 95,800. It was originally a stopping point on a Roman road, but the discovery of the Apostle (Santiago) James’ tomb at the beginning of the 9th century gave rise to a place of workshop in the corner of the Iberian Peninsula. Visitors will nd its treasures exhibited in sixteen museums as well as the surprising richness of its contemporary architecture, designed by Eisenman, Hedjuk or Siza, surrounded by Galicia’s largest area of parks and gardens.
The main attraction of the city is the old town. Several visits could be carried out within it or around it. For more information, visit the Tourism O ce o cial web:
