Greetings from Korea University! As President of KU with a strong sense of responsibility and

sincerity, I am putting forth my best efforts to make the future of KU stand tall in the world,

building upon the proud history of KU as the nation’s pride and hope.

We are now standing at a great transitional period in the history of civilization. Our average life

expectancy has been extended by more than 30 years, and the world that we live in has

become one big global community. Informatization, led by the semiconductor and computer

revolution, has dramatically changed human civilization again. Societies, organizations, and

knowledge are changing even at this very moment. Moreover, we are facing many issues

that are newly threatening humanity, along with these drastic changes.

KU is pursuing a new start with “Pioneering Intellectuals.” Established in 1905 as the nation’s

first private higher education institution, KU has embraced its heritage and history in pio-

neering the nation’s future during the Japanese occupation, emulated Inchon who built the

Library (the current Graduate School Building) by traveling all over the country to raise funds,

and followed its seniors who have led democratization and industrialization with the spirits of

liberty, justice and truth. Bearing its distinguished history in mind, KU is committed to nurtur-

ing young and passionate pioneering intellectuals who can lead the future of humanity in the

21st century.

Korea University will nurture young students not as passengers waiting for a cruise ship

ready to set sail on a pleasant and comfortable journey but as pioneers who can build their

own boats to navigate through rough and heavy seas. To this end, we will endure the ex-

A Global Symbol, the First Step Towards a Global KUThe icon symbolizes KU’s global vision to enter the ranks of world’s top universities based on its century-old history and tradition.

“Shield”, Education Saves the Nation The shield symbolizes founder Yong-Ik Lee’s belief that “Education Saves the Nation”, which lead to the establishment of KU.

“Crimson”, the passion of youth Crimson symbolizes vitality and passion, embodying KU’s academic

traditions and nature.

“Tiger”, a roar that shakes the Earth. As a symbol of both Korea and KU, the tiger represents KU’s cour-

age, determination, swiftness and dignity.

“1905”, beginning of National KU 1905, the year of KU’s establishment, demonstrates KU’s 105 year tradition and depth of academic research.

School MottoThe school motto announced in celebration of KU’s 50th anniversary represents the realization of human freedom (LIBERTAS), the pursuit of justice (JUSTITIA) in society and an overflowing passion for the search for truth (VERITAS). “Liberty, Justice, Truth”, what makes KU people true KU people

KU’s School SongKU’s school song, heard at nine every morning resounding from the clock tower of the College of Liberal Arts building, was announced to celebrate KU’s 50th anniversary in May 1955. The lyrics were written by Ji-Hoon Cho, a member of the famous coterie of poets called the Blue-Green Party and a KU professor at that time. The poet was also well known for the poem Seungmu (Buddhist Dance) in which every line contained liberty, justice and truth, the three words representing KU’s spirit. The music was written by Isang Yun, a promising young composer at that time.

The Korean Precision Medicine EnterpriseThe Korea University Medical Center (KUMC)Selected for the National Precision Medicine Enterprise Awarded USD 68.5 million in fundingTwo KUMC projects were selected by the Precision Medicine Enterprise of Korea’s Ministry of Information and ICT and the Ministry of Health and Wel-fare. This important national strategic initiative has allocated USD 68.5 mil-lion over five years from government (USD 55.5 million) and private (USD 13 million) sources. The two KUMC projects comprising this venture are the K-MASTER Project Group (Cancer Precision Medicine Diagnosis and Treat-ment Enterprise) led by Prof. Yeul Hong Kim and the Development Project Group (Cloud-Based Hospital Information System for Precision Medicine) led by Prof. Sang Heon Lee.

Being the First Pioneer in the Rising Land of OpportunityKU-Latin America Project Latin America is an emerging market, currently receiving worldwide atten-tion. While other universities pursue globalization focusing on the U.K. and the U.S., KU has launched the KU-Latin American Project by pioneering Latin America for the first time. KU is the first university in Korea to sign an MOU with the University of Habana, located in Cuba. KU built the KU Global Center in the prestigious Renmin University of China located in Beijing in 2013. Every year, KU sends about sev-enty students to Renmin University of China and the Harbin Institute of Technology in order to provide

them with opportunities to intensively acquire the language and widely ex-perience the culture in China. The KU-China Global Leadership Project trains students from various academic fields to become regional experts in the Chinese language and culture. The project has been carried out successfully two times a year since 2013. Together with these , KU also hosts the KU-Latin America Global Leadership Program, KU-Japan Global Leadership Program, and KU-Brazil Global Leadership Program.

Main Library Opened in 1978, the Main Library contains about 1,900,000 works--the

largest collection in any private university library in Korea. This beautiful

14,390m2 stone structure was completely remodeled in 2004. Equipped

with such state-of-the-art facilities as search functions for each room, refer-

ence information rooms, and Web-based learning corners, it serves as a

proud heart for KU intellectuals by supporting students’ academic research

activities. With the November 2013 completion of Korea’s first RFID system

for a university library covering the entire campus, the Main Library offers

24-hour automated lending and returning services as well as systematic

collection management and efficient operations.

CJ-International House This hotel-type residential facility is designed to serve the growing numbers of visiting scholars, foreign professors and exchange stu-dents. Equipped with study rooms, cafeteria, lounges, conference rooms, a fitness center, and the YBM Lounge, it can accommodate 326 residents--68 instructors and 258 students.

Hwajeong Tiger DomeCompleted in 2006 on a 18,182㎡ site, this multi-purpose sports complex with three stories above ground and three below helps stu-dents and faculty members maintain good health.

LG-POSCO Hall This cutting-edge building was completed on a 14,122m² site with

KRW 25 billion in funds donated by corporations and alumni. Incor-porating the best features of similar facilities at Harvard, Stanford, and the University of California, Berkeley, it is one of the world’s pre-mier Business Administration complexes.

Media Hall (KU-Cinema Trap)The Media Hall is equipped with a variety of practical training fa-cilities capable of film production and screening. It also boasts the KU-Cinema Trap, a 144-seat cinema, in which KU students can enjoy movies at a low cost, and the “Crimson Lounge” on the eleventh and twelfth floors.

Hana SquareThis gigantic structure of 28,099㎡ stretching from east to west in front of the Science Library includes one story above ground and three below. Appearing like a ship floating on the ocean, the structure boasts grand beauty with a charming and practical design. Winner of the Award of Excellence in the 25th Seoul Architectural Work Award, it now stands as a proud landmark of KU.

Haesong Law Library Opened in 2007, the Haesong Law Library boasts the largest collec-tion of any Korean law facility. Awarded the grand prize in the 2007 Korean Architectural Culture competition in recognition of its cutting-edge functions, unity of composition, and materials, the building is a stirring symbol of KU’s highly-regarded law school.

Centennial Digital Library Being the world’s finest both in terms of facilities and size, this high-tech information center plays a pivotal role in maintaining electronic library services.

ISEP with 300 Prestigious Schools WorldwideISEP (International Student Exchange Program) includes 300 member institutions in 43 countries throughout the world. KU is one of the select number of member universities in Korea to join the program. Every year KU students taking part in ISEP’s various exchange and study abroad pro-grams gain invaluable experiences together from other member institu-tions throughout the world.

Overseas InternshipsInternship program sends a number of talented interns not only to inter-national organizations such as the UN and UNESCO, but also to renowned global corporations like UBS, Merrill Lynch, Tiger Fund, GE, and Bloomberg in New York, Paris and the third world. The number of corporations and institutions affiliated with this program is growing every year.

Foreign Language 7+1 ProgramKU has also adopted the “7+1” system, which makes it a prerequisite for students majoring in foreign languages to study for, out of a total eight semesters, at least one semester overseas in a country where their target languages are spoken as a mother tongue,. This special program offers students the opportunity not only to polish their language skills to a native speaker level but also to learn the culture and broaden their full spectrum of understanding as they develop expertise in the foreign languages and literature which are considered a must in this globalized world.

International Summer/Winter CampusKU’s International Summer/Winter Campus offers over 120 challeng-ing coursestaught by distinguished faculty from prestigious universities around theworld as well as Korean culture workshops, field trips, and a special lectureconducted by noted experts. Students participating in the InternationalSummer/Winter Campus attend top lectures by international-lyrenownedscholars andengage in exchanges with students from all over the world.

Filled with Crimson Passion and the Energy of Youth

Annual Ko-Yon-Jeon (Korea-Yonsei Games), Competi-tion and Friendship that Lead KoreaEach fall, Jamsil Stadium comes alive with the competition and friendship between longstanding rivals Korea University and Yonsei University. The origin of the Games dates back to the Japanese colo-nial period when the two rivals Bosung College and Yonhi College be-gan holding sporting events that helped many Korean people endure the hardships of colonial rule. Over the past 90 years, Ko-Yon-Jeon has radiated the burning passion of youth, having become a festival of not simply two universities, but also the whole country. Today, to-gether with the five matches of football (soccer), baseball, basketball, ice hockey, and rugby, the Games have developed into a variety of celebrations such as joint academic and broadcasting events and exchanges among departments and clubs. Ko-Yon-Jeon and the two prestigious rival universities will continue in everlasting friendship.

Over the past 90 years, since the period of Japanese colonial rule, Ko-Yon-Jeon has radiated the burning passion youth, having become a festival of not only two universities, but also the whole country.

Club activities to support dreams, love and romanceStudent club activities are often considered the gem of campus life. Join-ing others who share similar hobbies, interests and talents and growing together are an essential pleasure in KU life. There are over 150 clubs on the Anam and Sejong campuses including the 80 clubs on the Seoul Campus focused on society, social sciences, life and culture, exhibitions and creative art, language studies, performance art, religion, and sports, as well as the 20 clubs on the Aegineung (Science Campus) for culture and sports, society and religion, performance art, and scientific research.

Student Ambassador Yeoul, Pride Surpassing the Face of KU Yeoul, KU’s student ambassador team, was launched in 1998 to help spread the word about KU. Yeoul, meaning “Let KU flow”, expresses the pride of student ambassadors. Serving as the face of KU through their love for and pride in the school, Yeoul not only serves visitors on campus but also goes off campus to run a variety of PR programs.

Great Granite Tower Festival, Festival of Resurgent YouthThe Great Granite Tower Festival (Suktap Daedong Festival) in May is KU’s premier festival, inviting not only the wider KU family but also the local community. The festival fills the entire campus with the energy of youth. During the festival a variety of events are held and the intellectual spirit and romance of the campus are felt everywhere. The cheering fes-tival Ipselenti, the most passionate and popular event, academic semi-nars of sharp analysis and discussion, joint broadcasting events with Yonsei University and street festivals on Chamsari Street go on all week.

KUSSO (Korea University Social Service Organization), Living the True Value of Sharing Since its launch on December 23, 2008, KUSSO has been working vigor-ously to practice “noblesse oblige” under the motto of “Intellectuals to take action, leaders to think, a university to serve the society”. In order to fulfill the responsibilities of true intellectuals required by our times, it strives to make greater efforts to serve not only Korea but also all humankind everywhere in the world.

KU Paper, KTN, KUBS, Driving Force of the 21st Century MediaThe KU Paper, the first university newspaper launched in 1947, is de-livered to KU students every Monday and features on- and off-campus news analyzed with sharp perceptiveness. KUBS, launched in 1961, is the on-campus broadcasting system representing the students’ voices. It runs regular audio and internet broadcasting. Opened in 1997 as the first campus TV station, KTN broadcasts news and more for 24 hours a day through an on-campus CATV network and the Internet.

KU Business School is committed to leading not simply Korea’s future, but also the global economy. The business school shares the full history of Korea University, beginning in 1905, and the history of the remarkable economic growth of Korea. From the infancy of the Korean economy to the present advanced economic state, KU Business School has been laying a foundation for business administra-tion studies and producing leaders in the field. With a world-class faculty, students, and curriculum, combined with robust globalization efforts, KU Business School intends to become the leading business school in Asia and enter the top 30 in the world by 2030. Its globally competitive curriculum, faculty and student exchanges with the world’s most prestigious universities and international internship programs are turning heads around the world. For the first time ever in Korea, the school was academically accredited in 2005 by the AACSB, the most renowned scholars’ group in the US. It acquired EQUIS approval, the world’s leading international accreditation for business schools, from EFMD. The College of Liberal arts, founded in 1946, spans 15 departments. This college is leading efforts toward internationalization and globalization: Korean studies sheds light on the national culture from a unique angle, while humanities and foreign literature studies actively engage in world-class research and education. Since its foundation, the College of Liberal Arts has been not only focusing on the development of the basic humanities, including literature, philosophy and history, but also turning its eyes to applied sci-ences such as sociology and psychology. As demonstrated by KU’s installation of Chinese and Russian language and literature departments 20 years prior to the restoration of formal diplomatic relations and by KU’s initiation earlier than any other university in Korea of studies in Spanish language and literature, Japanese and Classic Chinese as well as linguistics, the college has invariably shown fore-sight in a rapidly changing world by deliberating on the values that Korean society needs to possess. The college has pioneered a ‘7+1’ program designed to develop global leaders, through which students study for a semester at one of KU’s sister universities abroad. Dating back to 1905, the history of the College of Political Science and Economics shares the history of Korea University and has kept actively abreast of changing times. With the aim of nurturing future-oriented, creative and talented individuals, the College of Engi-neering has instructed around 20,000 students since 1963. This college has played a significant role in bringing Korean engineering education and industry up to the standards of advanced na-tions. In the new information and knowledge era of the 21st century, the college is accelerat-ing its efforts to nurture science and technology leaders who will enhance Korea’s international competitiveness.Possessing the far-looking vision that engineering education is closely related to industry, re-search bodies and government policy, the college established in 1996 for the first time in Korea the Korea Techno Complex to promote research cooperation between academia and industry. All this creates a hub for high tech research in Korea. By providing nearly 3.5 hectares of research labs on campus to large firms and venture compa-nies, the college offers its students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with practicing engineers. In addition, the college works with 16 other R&D centers at KU and has been awarded large-scale government-sponsored projects including through BK21. As a government-designated graduate-school-led institution of higher education, the college produces almost 1,000 engineers and scientists a year who are expected to lead the knowledge-based industry of Korea.

The College of Education was established in 1972 on the basis of Korea University’s educational objective “to deepen the character of knowledge (ci), virtue (tek) and physical health (chey), inculcate creative academic research and professional practice skills, and foster open-minded leadership, and thereby contribute to Korea and the global community.” The college consists of eight academic depart-ments with the explicit goal of cultivating creative global education experts possessing both personal-ity and intelligence. It has consecutively received the highest ranking with outstanding evaluations for excellence among all Korean education colleges by the Ministry of Education.The College of Education provides both a Kongseonsahuwon study room and a group study seminar room for the national teacher qualification examination and houses an estimated 1,600 text books in the textbook reference room to help students realize their goal of becoming teachers. It also offers a satowen study room solely for students who are preparing for national administrative exams to become education administrative experts.Moreover, to nurture education experts by instilling global competencies and experiences in various educational environments, the College of Education has signed an agreement with the Federal Way Education Association to allow students to practice their teaching as student teachers in affiliated middle and high schools. The college offers various opportunities including but not limited to the Into the World Challenge program where students can benchmark renowned overseas education institutes and trainee programs in overseas Korean schools and practice their teaching skills over a 4-week period. Based on the principles of freedom, justice, and truth, the College of Medicine aims to cultivate outstanding doctors who protect human dignity and health, realize social justice, and explore the truth of learning.With the completion of the Moonsook Medical Center on March 2014 following the completion of the main medical center in 2012, the College of Medicine has become the nation’s leading educational institution of medicine, equipped with the best learning environment and facilities, specialized research infrastructure, and an excellent education system. It provides state-of-the-art education through the nation’s only exclusive teaching and learning support center for the College of Medicine. It has also produced monumental research achievements in the history of medicine, such as the development of the world’s first Epidemic Hemorrhagic Fever vaccine. It has played a pivotal role in medical developments and public health: The College of Medicine was selected as a BK21Plus project partner, and Anam and Kuro hospitals were selected as national research hospitals. Founded in 2014 by consolidating existing software-related departments, the College of Informa-tion aims to nurture software talent with the global competitiveness and creativity required to lead developments in software-based convergence technology. The undergraduate program in the College of Informatics consists of two departments. The Department of Computer Science and Engineering is a newly established department through the merger of the Department of Computer and Communications Engineering from the College of Information and Communications and the Department of Computer Education from the College of Education that focuses on soft-ware education. The Department of Cyber Defense was founded in cooperation with the Ministry of National Defense with the aim of nurturing professional cyber security officers to protect the nation from threats of cyber warfare. It provides four-year tuition and the faculty of the Graduate School of Information Security, Korea’s foremost information security education institution, are in charge of professional information security education training. Being the largest software oriented college, the College of Informatics with its renowned faculty members and outstanding students is performing world-class software research.The College of Information has recently attracted large national projects of government agencies and research foundations, and has been supporting industrial technology development through collaborated research with industry. Since its establishment in 2002, the Division of International Studies has been devoted to nurturing world-class global leaders. It is currently establishing itself as Korea’s leading col-lege. In 2014, it was ranked 1st in Korea and 26th in the world by the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a famous British higher education evaluation agency, in July 2012; and 2nd in Korea by the U.S. News & Report, a prestigious American university evaluation system. The faculty, comprised of 18 full-time professors, visiting professors and part-time lectur-ers, is unrivalled by any standard – including SSCI paper publication and lecture evaluation. If education in international studies has been focused on interdisciplinary studies concerning language proficiency and global mindsets, the next wave of education needs to concentrate on cultivating strategic professionals with concrete problem-solving abilities with regard to global climate change, terrorism and multinational corporations as well as enhancing second and third foreign language proficiencies.To this end, the Division of International Studies has designed an educational system to foster expertise in the following five fields: international development and cooperation, international commerce, international peace and security, regional studies, and Korean studies. In addition, to provide the opportunity to obtain practical experience, it established a close cooperative relationship with external organizations. In 2010, the Division of International Studies brought the UNDP Seoul Policy Center, a global network of the UN, into the KU International Studies Hall. In 2014, it founded the EU Center in collaboration with the KIEP and SBS. With climate change being one of the major perennial global issues, the Division hosts the Model United Nations Climate Change Conference . It also hosts the English Debate Championship and Model UN Competition as extracurricular student club activities, enabling it to take pride in being the foremost in Korea in terms of academics and scale. It is also actively conducting courtesy training necessary for graduates advancing to international organizations, and providing various international internship op-portunities in cooperation with international organizations such as the IAEA.

The department of art education under the College of Education, established in 1989, wasrestructured in 2000 into four departments (oriental painting, western painting, sculpture,and industrial design) of the School of Art and later into two departments (fine art andindustrial design) in 2007. Under the motto “Nurturing culture creators and global leaders,”the school was reborn as the School of Art and Design and started on a new path towardfurther growth.With an aim of becoming a first-class center for art and design, the school has beendeveloping and applying an innovative teaching curriculum and has transferred its classrooms to a newly erected state-of-the-art building. In order to facilitate globalization, theschool pursues a variety of exchange programs with prestigious universities and businessesaround the world.The department of industrial design offers a competitive program that covers not onlyproduct design but also interface/interaction and interior, graphic, and entertainment designfrom the past to the future. The Department of Fine Art offers a quality curriculum that spans Korean painting, western painting, and sculpture as well as emerging subjects that reflect the new cultural environment. The School of Media and Communication, which originated from the nation’s first Department of Mass Communication established in 1965, opened a new chapter in history by restructuring its curriculum in order to provide global media education befitting the changing age of media. It aims to nurture students who are capable of synthesizing wide-ranging and complex issues in media and communication with a balanced perspective and addressing the issues in an efficient way based on creative thinking and knowledge of data science. The school has become a leading training center for those in the media industry of Korea, produc-ing a host of journalists and professors in media and communication studies. Media Hall, built in 2011, is one of the major educational facilities where the school provides a comprehensive educa-tional environment encompassing the areas of broadcasting, newspaper, online communication, advertising, and PR through the integrated media education system. The school has a balanced focus on theory and practice, offering basic courses such as “Intro-duction to Media Studies” and “Introduction to Media Data Science”, as well as practical classes such as “Drama Production,” “Multimedia Reporting,” “Journalism Writing,” and “Advertising Campaigns.”

The College of Global Business was formed in 2017 by combining the College of Humanities and the College of Business & Economics at the Sejong Campus. The world’s progress can be viewed largely in terms of three regions: the Anglosphere, China, and Germany. Against this backdrop, the College of Global Business seeks to nurture business leaders who possess basic knowledge in Korean studies, British and American studies, Chinese studies and German studies. In doing business in the age of globalization, a key to success is having a good understanding of foreign cultures. In order to understand foreign cultures, we must first understand our own culture and become aware of the differences. Attaining success in business would be difficult without education in the humanities. Korea University is taking the initiative to create a new paradigm in business by integrating regional studies. The College of Global Business has been designed to embrace risks and to challenge tradition so as to adapt to a constantly changing business environment. The School of Interdisciplinary Studies was founded in 2009 to train students who wish to be civic leaders or enter law school. Modern society requires not merely in-depth knowledge in one specific area, but also generalized knowledge traversing a number of different fields. In order to keep pace with this trend in society, the school offers a multidisciplinary course comprised of varied subjects spanning disciplines.At this school, students are able to design their own majors based on their aptitudes or future ca-reer goals. The College of Public Policy can be broadly divided into the areas of economics and statistics, public sociology and Korean unification, and public administration. With the relocation of various central government offices and national research institutions to Sejong, the city has become the key area for establishing government policies, leading to a demand for research and education in public policy. In response to such needs, departments in the fields of social science and public policy under the College of Business and Economics, College of Humanities, and the School of Public Administration have been integrated to form the new college. In the School of Economics and Statistics, students learn how to analyze the economy and acquire an understanding of both statistics and the foundation of government policy. The School of Public Sociology and Korean Unification-Diplomacy focuses on the Public Sociology required for social developments, with studies geared toward the relationship between North and South Korea, and the potential for Korean unification. The School of Governmental Administration supports students studying the administration of the government, and in particular, the need to improve the ef-ficiency of administration.At the College of Public Policy, students have an opportunity to explore six different majors in three schools and choose an additional major for their future career, while completing their coursework for their first major.
