Arain barrel is a water tankwhich is used to collect andstore rainwater at the end of

your downspout, which you can thenuse to water plants or gardens. Theyare a simple, efficient, low-costmethod for homeowners to collectand recycle water. Using rain as aresource in rain gardens and rainbarrels can have a dramatic impact onwater quality in our rivers and streams and will help reduce flooding. Somefacts about rain barrels and the tremendous impact they can have on ourwater resources:

It's estimated that during the hot summer months, the average homeowner uses 40 percent of the household water in the yard.

Collecting the mineral rich & chlorine free rain that falls on your roofcan help your garden, houseplants and reduce your water bill.

Modern rain barrels are sealed, safe around children and insect resistant.

A hose spigot on the front makes the captured rainwater available.

Keeping the rain that falls on our property, utilizing it, and not allowing it to run off will help recharge the water supply and reduce the stress on our creeks and rivers.

A quarter-inch of rain falling on the average home yields over 200 gallons of water.

Water conservation practices are not just for times of water shortage. Soundwater use practices reduce the amount of stress that we place on our resources, both by limiting water withdrawals and by decreasing wastewater discharges.Conserving water reduces wear and tear on major infrastructure such as waterand wastewater treatment plants and the distribution systems that deliver waterto consumers, and can postpone or eliminate the need for making major investments in new infrastructure. Using less water helps us to become moreflexible during times when there is a water shortage. Conserving water is simple and inexpensive!

Installing a rain barrel is an easy way to start conserving water now.
