WHO WE ARE:Sponsored by The American Society of
Civil Engineers (ASCE), Lehigh University's Steel Bridge Team is a student-run organization that applies real world engineering in order to create a 1:10 model steel bridge.
The steel bridge team's main goal is to take a student's engineering capabilities and refine them for an experience that is competitive, goal oriented, but most importantly, fun.
The other ambition of LU Steel Bridge is to take home the National Student Steel Bridge Championship (NSSBC) which is held annually in May each year.
About The Team WHAT WE DO:
Comprised of two main phases, the LU Steel Bridge team works throughout the entirety of the school year designing (1st phase) and constructing (2nd phase) a scaled model of a steel bridge. Students are encouraged to participate in both phases so they can receive technical and design experience.
Computer drafting, designing, engineering computation, as well as construction accounting are a few of the areas ventured upon during the design phase. Fabrication, grinding, welding, and drilling are some of the skills used during the construction phase.
Competition StructureDisplay:
The display portion of the competition is judged by the appearance of the bridge, permanent identification of the bridge, and poster describing the design. Construction Speed:
The bridge with the lowest total time will win in the construction speed category.Lightness:
The bridge with the least total weight will win in the lightness category.Stiffness:
The bridge with the lowest aggregate deflection will win in the stiffness category.Construction Economy:
The bridge with the lowest construction cost will win in the construction economy category.Structural Efficiency:
The bridge with the lowest structural cost will win in the construction economy category.Overall Performance:
The bridge achieving the lowest sum of structural and construction cost will win the overall competition.
About The CompetitionThe National Student Steel Bridge Team Championship (NSSBC) is being held at
Oregon State University this year. Prior to Nationals, regional competitions will be held. From these, the top three winners are then allowed to compete in the National Competition. Lehigh participates in the Mid-Atlantic Conference competition which will be held at Maryland University on April 7-9, 2016. The 40 page competition rule book released every year is used to set the parameters for the bridge design. This book contains specific categories as well as all the rules every bridge must follow. Every competing school must abide by and effectively maximize the NSSBC specified categories in order to win. A breakdown of the competition structure can be seen below:
Sponsorship Benefits As a student run organization, the Lehigh University Steel Bridge Team relies primarily on corporate sponsorships to successfully complete our bridge. While Lehigh does provide lab access for fabrication purposes, we would not be able to manufacture our bridge without your help.
Lehigh Steel Bridge is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization:— all donations are tax deductible
Visibility: Being a sponsor of the Lehigh University Steel Bridge Team means getting plenty of exposure on Lehigh's campus. Team members wear their shirts with pride and the team has a large presence in both the engineering and business communities.
Networking and Recruiting: Sponsoring also means connecting and recruiting from the best and brightest students involved with engineering and science at Lehigh University.
