MY VOICE, MY CHOICE

MICHELLE MYOUNGHEE KIM

ROHRBACH LIBRARY VOICES AND CHOICES

The power in the work of Michelle Myounghee Kim lies in its very tran-quility: a serene quietude whose subtlety transcends a bustling, hyperspeed culture and invites us to pause and reflect. Her passion for painting is intense, yet the fluid stillness of her art catches the viewer by surprise. These canvases in the library’s upstairs quiet area speak with calming eloquence.

MICHELLE MYOUNGHEE KIM

I was born in Korea and received a Bachelors Degree of Fine Arts from Hong-Ik University and a Masters Degree of Public Health from Seoul National University in Korea.

I came to the United States of America in 1991 and lived in Colorado for five years when my husband studied for his Ph.D. We moved to beautiful Lake Tahoe for his job and lived there for five years before we settled down in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Currently, I live with my husband, two daughters, and one son.

I have actively participated in professional career activities. These include a multitude of art exhibitions and affiliations with art institu-tions in New York, Washington D.C. and Allentown. I have also been volunteering as a docent and serving as a curatorial committee member of SOTA (Society of the Arts) for the Allentown Art Mu-seum. These experiences as well as my incessant thirst for learning and knowledge motivated me in studying at Kutztown University in Art Education for my second Masters degree.

As a Korean-American painter and art educator, I have undergone a dramatic “journey of life” that has enabled me to create artworks that reflect my experiences, feelings, everyday life, and family. My personal quest as an artist is to create powerful connections that tell of my journey and my story of remembrance and hope.

I paint my works in the hopes of giving people a peace of mind and a relaxation from the complexities of life. The aspiration is that the viewers have a chance to introspect on their own lives through my paintings.

Artist’s Statement

Four canvases narrate the imagined trajectory of Michelle’s family: from her pairing with her husband, to the arrival of offspring who come up and then depart—in the end leaving the contented elders alone, together, once again.
