    Tamil Nadu has a prominent position in the cultural map of India. The state has a very good

    name in the fields of arts, music, literature, etc. Dances like Bharathanatyam, Kollattam, Kummi,Kavadi, Kalakshetra, Karagams, etc. are more popular in the state. The people of the state have

    the living style of their own in the aspects of costumes, food, language, arts, culture, etc.

    Festivals like Pongal, Jallikattu, Mahamagam festival, Mamalapuram dance festival, Kanthurifestival, Karthigal festival, Navaratri festival, music festival, etc. are celebrated in the state.

    Tamil is the official language of Tamil Nadu state and one of the 18 languages mentioned in the

    eighth schedule of the Indian constitution. Tamil is one of the classical languages of the world,with a rich heritage of literature. It is the most widely spoken language in Tamil Nadu. Besides

    Tamil Nadu, Tamil is also spoken by a number of people in Sri Lanka, Singapore, Mauritius and

    Malaysia.

    The antiquity of Tamil is comparable to Sanskrit. Tamil is written in a derivative of the southern

    'Brahmi' script. The alphabet of Tamil is unique (phonetic). That is, in Tamil language lettersrepresent sounds, rather than ideas, as is the case in the 'Mandarin' language of China.

    The literature of Tamil Nadu has a long tradition which is more than 2000 years old. However,some documents had revealed that the language existed even before the period. The literature of

    the language had seen some progress in the late nineteenth century with the works having

    religious and philosophical nature.

    Idli or dosa vada, pongal and Uppuma. Coconut chutney and sambhar invariably form a part ofmost of the Tamil dishes these are the general breakfast of the Tamil people. The people in the

    state take rice with sambar or rasam as lunch and dinner.

    Religions in Tamil Nadu

    The history and culture of Tamilnadu goes back to thousands years back. For centuries, people ofvarious religions have been residing in the state. The main religions in Tamilnadu are Hinduism,

    Islam, Christianity and Jainism. Hinduism, along with its various sects, is the oldest religion in

    the state.

    Style of dressing by the Tamils were so simple and humble a piece of white cloth measuring four or eightfeet with a shirt is enough to complete their dress. Now it is giving way to pant and shirt and even

    designer dresses. Ladies when attained puberty wore a long shirt with blouse and a piece of cloth called

    thaavani to cover the top portion of the body. After marriage they were saree and blouse. Now

    modern dresses are slowly making their way to replace these traditional dresses.
