About Us NW ABQ Political Action Group was formed on the day after the Women’s March. One of us posted on a neighborhood forum seeking others who wanted to get together and share our deep distress and fears about the new administration in Washington and create some kind of positive action. There was almost immediate positive response. As a group, and individually, we seek to educate ourselves on how to become more effective advocates for perpetuating liberal values that protect the vulnerable among us, our diversity, and our environment. Although we still consider ourselves a “neighborhood” group, our boundaries have expanded and we are inclusive of any like-minded folks living in our City who seek to join with us. Some of our members are also active as volunteers within the community. Our group is reaching out to other local community activist groups and local chapters of national groups seeking to coordinate all of our efforts and create a unified voice. Very few members of our group have been politically active in a significant way, so, as students of Activism 101, we are stepping outside of our comfort zones and learning how to create strategies for positive change in our community and our state. We consider ourselves a part of “The Resistance” movement, or to use a phrase from the 1960’s, “If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem.” We welcome fellow collaborators! Mission Statement Our country is currently experiencing a backlash of authoritarianism born of hatred, fear, prejudice, disenfranchise- ment, and rampant propaganda. The clock is ticking. Our mission is to: actively practice democracy to protect our Bill of Rights, which is being threatened anew every passing day; and to organize and build community to motivate our best leaders and representatives to enact and support legislation of conscience that protects and promotes justice, fairness, economic equity, and our environment–for the short and the long term. Goals 1. Elect liberal, forward thinking, progressive leaders; with initial focus on local elections (Albuquerque mayor and then NM governor). 2. Influence Legislation, initial focus on local issues. 3. Become educated regarding the NM Health Security Plan and support the plan as we move toward the 2019 State Legislature. 4. Work to make Albuquerque a part of the Mayors National Climate Action. Agenda, honoring and supporting the Paris Climate Agreement.* 5. Work to make Albuquerque a true sanctuary city.* 6. Work for green waste collection in Albuquerque.* 7. Work on developing ideas on how to improve the education environment in Albuquerque. _______________ * Items 4, 5, & 6 will likely have to wait for substantial action until after the mayoral election this fall.
