Whales are not fish. They are mammals. A mammal is an

animal that has lungs and breathes air. They also have hair on

their bodies. Whales are sea mammals that live in thesea. Whales give birth to babies. They are called calves. The

females are called cows, and males are called bulls. The

calves do not have any blubber. Blubber is a thick layer of fat

under the skin. Dolphins are whales. They enjoy frolicking near

ships at sea. A whale breathes through its blowhole. When it

sleeps, it closes its blowhole very tightly. It is almost like it is

    holding its breath.

    CHARACTERISTICS

    11/15loading DESCRIPTION

Whales are the biggest animals that have ever lived on theplanet. The largest animal in the world is the blue whale. The

biggest recorded blue whale was over 110 feet long, and

weighed more than 400,000 pounds. There are about 80

different kinds of whales. It would take 30 fully-grown elephants

to equal the weight of a blue whale.

The humpback whale has the longest flippers of any

whale. They are about 14 feet long. Humpback whales cangrow to be 60 feet. The average humpback weighs over 40

tons (8,000 pounds), while an average adult human weighs 200

pounds. The skeleton of a human usually weighs 25

pounds. The skeleton of a blue whale weighs more than 50,000

pounds. A large blue whale can eat more than 9,000 pounds of

    food everyday. They eat plankton.

Whales have a very different way of seeing underwater. Theysend a sharp clicking noise that travels quickly through the

water. Then the sound bounces off a fish, or another object in

the water, and travels back to the whale. Then the whale can

figure out the size and shape of the object, as well how as how

far away it is. This is called echolocation.

    WHERE DO

    WHALES LIVE?

  • 7/29/2019 About Whale

    15/15loading DESCRIPTION

    Whale songs consist of distinct

    sequences of groans, moans, roars,

sighs and high pitched squeals that

may last up to 10 minutes or longer. Itis thought these sounds could be used

for communicative purposes such as to

    identify other individuals, for long-range

contact and to warn others of threats

as well as navigation. Baleen whales

do not have vocal chords so scientists

are still unsure how whale songs are

    produced.
