Brief history

Provide a brief history of your organization to give us an understanding of its development and context for current activities.

The Toronto Consort was formed in 1972, and presented its first series in the 1972/73 season. The 2013/2014 season marks the 41st anniversary of the Toronto Consort, making the group one of Canadas longest-standing and most successful chamber ensembles. The Toronto Subscription Series has five concerts which are presented twice (Friday and Saturday nights) and a further two also have Sunday matines. The concerts are presented in the recently-renovated Jeanne Lamon Hall, at the Trinity-St. Pauls Centre in downtown Toronto. The Toronto Consort has made recordings for the CBC Collection, Berandol, SRI, Dorian, and Marquis, with 10 CDs to its credit, two of which have been nominated for Juno awards. The most recent recording (Navidad) was released in 2012. The Toronto Consort also tours regularly, having been to Europe and Great Britain four times, and since 2010, it has toured to Alberta and British Columbia, the Maritimes, and throughout Ontario and the U.S.The Consort offers popular and successful educational outreach projects for high school students in the Toronto area and on tour. Three different programs are presented: An Introduction to Medieval Music, Shakespeares Songbook and The Marco Polo Project. While the Consorts core repertoire dates from medieval, renaissance and baroque Europe, the Consort is also well-known for its commitment to modern Canadian works within its mandate. The Consort has had many modern works written specifically for the ensemble, including works by John Beckwith, Lothar Klein, David Keane, Hope Lee, Walter Buczynski, David Eagle, Patrick Cardy, Mychael Danna, Christos Hatzis, Andrew Ager, R. Murray Schafer and David Fallis. Furthermore, the Consort often creates its own editions and arrangements of early music. In some cases, these are standard transcriptions, but in many instances they are unique arrangements involving considerable creative decision-making.The Toronto Consort has appeared with the Toronto Symphony under Andrew Davis, the Montreal Symphony under Charles Dutoit, and the North German Radio Orchestra. It has recorded theme music for film and television, including Atom Egoyans The Sweet Hereafter. Recently, the ensemble has been called upon to produce music for historical-drama TV series, including The Tudors, The Borgias and The Vikings, all produced by the cable network, Showtime. The Consort quite consciously works with artists from other disciplines in order to present early music in a fuller context. For instance, in The Marco Polo Project, Part 2 the Consort invited Lata Pada, the director of Sampradaya Dance Creations to create a new dance piece for bharatanatyam dancers with singer Suba Sankaran. The Consort has collaborated with many important artistic organizations, including the Toronto International Film Festival, Luminato Festival, Tafelmusik, Soundstreams, Sampradaya Dance Creations, Nuit Blanche, Opera Atelier and Doors Open.1972: Founding of The Toronto Consort, Director Timothy McGee.1972-80: Presents a series in Walter Hall, University of Toronto.1975: Director Timothy McGee leaves; Garry Crighton and David Klausner become interim Directors.1976: First major tour, to Arctic Canadian communities1980-84: Presents a series in St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Toronto.1982, 1984, 1986: Tours to Europe.1984-Present: Presents a series in Trinity-St. Pauls Centre, now named Jeanne Lamon Hall.1986: First recording for SRI.1990: David Fallis becomes Artistic Director & General Manager.1996: First recording for Dorian Records (four more over the next seven years).1998: Free Student Concert Education Program begins.2004: First recording for Marquis Classics (three more recordings and three re-releases over the next 10 years).2007: Annual touring programs in Canada (Alberta, B.C., Maritimes and Ontario) and the U.S. begin.2012: Present Janet Cardiffs sound sculpture Forty-part Motet at Trinity-St. Pauls as part of Nuit Blanche festival, spawning a major season-long education outreach workshop program.2013: Terry Raininger becomes Managing Director, relieving David Fallis from his General Manager role.

The Toronto Consorts long-time home base is Trinity-St. Pauls Centre (TSP), 427 Bloor Street West, since 1984. Our administrative offices and our Subscription Series venue Jeanne Lamon Hall (700 seats) is located here. The Consort pays the church a per service rental fee, which includes use of green rooms, stage, lights, etc. The Consort rents an office in the church building. The Toronto Consort has an excellent working relationship with Tafelmusik which is also at the TSP Centre, and the Consort uses the Tafelmusik box office services located in the same building for an agreed annual fee and per service charge. This past summer, TSP underwent an ambitious overhaul. The $2M Phase One project achieved remarkable acoustical improvements, the installation of a permanent stage, and more comfortable seating throughout the house.
