Head to quaint Victorian Wellsboro for its annual Dickens of a Christmas Festival full of food and craft vendors, strolling carolers, Christmas readings, street urchins and scalawags! Festival vendors dress in period attire as Wellsboro turns into a Dickens marketplace with musicians and singers, dancers, and street-corner thespians createing a Victorian atmosphere with Wellsboro’s gas street lights as a backdrop. Sit back and relax as you enjoy great scenery on this tour during a Susquehanna River Cruise aboard the Hiawatha Paddlewheeler Riverboat in Williamsport and on a Tioga Central Railroad excursion in Wellsboro.

The Hiawatha is a replica of the vessel that graced the Susquehanna’s waters in the 1800s when lumber barons called the region home and Victorian families sailed on the boat for recreation. You’ll learn what a Boom Rat is and hear how the Susquehanna River helped Williamsport become the richest city its size in America during the lumber era when underwater booms or corrals were built to sort lumber from the northern mountains on way to markets to the south. The boat features narration plus climate-controlled enclosed main deck with bar and open-air upper level, with dining options available on the main deck including picnic buffets and fine-dining served meals.

The Tioga Central Railroad travels on lines dating in part from the mid-1800s with a variety of historic cars including climate-controlled passenger cars, dining and snack bar cars and an open-air car. The train’s host welcomes groups with the history of the area that includes “the muck” where celery was once grown as well as information about the wild habitat of eagles, deer and osprey. Served meal options include soup and sandwich lunches to full deluxe meals.

To round out the trip we’ll include more local sites which may include the PA Grand Canyon Overlook outside of Wellsboro offering expansive views of this natural wonder nearly 50 miles long and 1,000 deep in places, and Pine Creek which runs through it.

Or, you may opt to include a driving tour of Williamsport’s historic Millionaires Row lead by a guide dressed in Victorian-inspired garb who will tell of the lumber barons who built their grand mansions and churches in the city and/or visit to the Rowley House Mansion Museum along Millionaires’ Row which was designed and built by Eber Culver in 1888 for E.A. Rowley, one of the wealthiest men in Pennsylvania. The home, featured in Victorian Times magazine, is considered to be one of the most architecturally significant houses in the Commonwealth. As the owner of PA’s largest wood-working machine companies, Rowley’s home was a showcase of mahogany, cherry, maple, walnut, white and red oak and pine woods. He was also the president of the Edison Electric Co and equipped his mansion with some of the finest and earliest electric light available along with stained-glass windows and Minton tiles from England.

Hit the high points of Erie, PA’s only port city and site of the historic Battle of Lake Erie, including the maritime museum, St. Patrick’s Church, Pulasko’s Chocolates and more! Known as the “Gem City” for its location on the edge of sparking Lake Erie, the city offers a fun blend of sites for a variety of travelers. A highlight is certainly the Erie Maritime Museum where exhibits including a short video illustrate the dramatic story of the Battle of Lake Erie and the War of 1812. Group members may also be able to visit the U.S. Brig Niagara, a reconstructed flagship, if in port. Another historic highlight is St. Patrick’s Church built in the early 1900s, and well known for 7/8 life size Stations of the Cross. The hand-carved wooden statues were made in Germany and a hand-painted canvas depicting the background of the city of Jerusalem unfolds behind the Stations. The church will provide a guide for group visits as well as an organist. Time to enjoy the city’s great food. Stop at Pulasko’s Chocolates to see how they make a variety of delicious treats and take home a bag of sponge candy, a regional specialty. We may also visit sites along the Lake Erie Wine Trail. After all wine and chocolate are hard to beat! The Tom Ridge Center offers a video and displays describing the ecosystem of Presque Isle Bay, a 75 foot glass tower (with elevator and stair access) for great views, and gift shop. Also included may be a driving tour of Presque Isle with a guide dressed as Joe Root, the legendary hermit of Presque Isle. You’ll see a light house and the Perry Monument, a 352-foot Doric column commemorating the Battle of Lake Erie in which Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry earned the Battle of 1812's greatest naval victory.

Time can also be included to visit Presque Isle Downs & Casino as well as the historic Warner Theatre.

Learn how three generations of Pattersons have been producing the finest quality maple syrup, cream, candy and sugar for those who enjoy the pure taste of nature’s premium sweetness for almost 100 years. Today when sugaring they use over 83,000 taps to collect sap and then turn that sap into maple delights. Also enjoy a narrated scenic ride aboard the Tioga Central Railroad from Wellsboro Junction to Hammond Lake and return. This train runs on a line which in part dates to 1840. Learn all about PA’s own natural wonder, the scenic PA Grand Canyon plus enjoy covered wagon rides, train excursion and chocolate factory!

Horse-drawn covered wagon rides offer a great perspective of the PA Grand Canyon also known as the Pine Creek Gorge which stretches nearly 70 miles from the Wellsboro area to Waterville. The gorge is surrounded by about 165,000 acres of state forest land and measures about 800 feet deep outside of Wellsboro. Enjoy the flora and fauna as the canyon walls rise above you on the guided wagon rides along Pine Creek. Rubber tires, shock absorbers, canvas top cover and seat cushions make for a comfortable ride on a rails to trails path.

Also enjoy views from above during a visit to the Leonard Harrison State Park which features visitors center with short film, gift shop and statue commemorating the Civilian Conservation Corp activities in the area.

Rides aboard the Tioga Central are also available (Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays) traveling from Wellsboro Junction to Hammond Lake and return. Watch for bald eagles, heron and deer along the way.

Route 6, the Grand Army of the Republican Highway, travels from Cape Cod, MA to Long Beach, CA including 400 miles through scenic PA. Find out why National Geographic called it one of America’s most scenic byways on this tour featuring wonderful diversions along 300 miles on and off the highway including historic towns, scenic mountain views, quirky sites and more from Scranton to Erie with Jamestown, NY options as a bonus.

Starting in the eastern area of PA, Route 6 offer highlights include Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, featuring a Technology Museum and History Museum as well as train excursions. Explore the people, history, technology and lore of steam railroading at this renown site.

Continuing westward visit Wellsboro, home to the PA Grand Canyon where you’ll enjoy views from the Leonard Harrison State Park plus perhaps covered wagon rides into the canyon’s upper gorge and along Pine Creek, a train excursion from Wellsboro Junction to Hammond Lake, and time to enjoy an artisan chocolate factory tour and/or browsing in quaint Wellsboro which still has gas street lights.

In Sabinsville you may visit PA’s largest maple farm for a tour plus deluxe tasting of nature’s sweet treats, in Eldred a WWII Museum, in Mount Jewett the glass-bottomed Kinzua Gorge Skywalk, and in Galeton, the newly renovated and expanded PA Lumber Museum which offers a recreated turn-of-the-century logging camp with visitors center and exhibits including a CCC cabin and Shay locomotive.

Towards the western end of Route 6’s PA leg you can zip north just a tad to explore highlights of Erie including the city’s wonderful Maritime Museum which is home to the state’s flagship, the Brig Niagara, plus historic sites such as St. Patrick’s Church featuring nearly life-sized stations of the cross and the Warner Theatre.

You may also visit nearby Jamestown, NY which is Lucille Ball’s hometown to learn all about this queen of comedy during a driving tour including visit to her gravesite and tour of the Lucille Ball Desi Center plus enjoy a lake cruise, winery tour and much more.

All aboard the Tioga Central Railroad in Wellsboro for a train ride from Wellsboro Junction to Hammond Lake and return! Look for bald eagles, blue heron, deer and other wildlife along the way of this historic railroad line that in some parts dates to 1840.

Learn about the rich history of the railroad which was used between Corning and the coal mines of Antrim in the 1870s and which began offering climate-controlled scenic passenger runs in 1994. The Tioga Central owns two dining cars one which has a fully functioning stainless steel kitchen and the other a 1939 Budd Stainless Steel car with large windows for scenic views. It also owns the 500 Canyon Club which is a 1920 ex-Canadian National car now home to a lounge and snack bar, Coach 285 which is another ex-Canadian National car originally built in 1942, and a popular open observation car known as the 300 Ives Run which is an ex-Pennsylvania Railroad P-70 coach, and the oldest piece of rolling stock which no longer rolls up and down the line, Car 54, originally built in 184 as a double-ended, platform paymaster car for the Grand Trunk Western and which now serves as a gift shop.

On the way to Hammond Lake, the train ride passes an area known as “the muck” where celery was once grown before being exported to Germany, plus wildlife habitats that are today home to deer, bear, blue heron, bald eagles and osprey.

Also enjoy expansive views of our own natural wonder, the PA Grand Canyon, stretching nearly 50 miles and embracing nearly 300-acres of forest, plus dine at the historic 19th-century Penn Wells Restaurant or on the train.

As a sweet treat also visit Highland Chocolates, an artisan chocolate factory, where you’ll see how fine confections are created and enjoy a souvenir treat (weekdays).

Time may also be included for browsing in downtown Wellsboro featuring gas street lights, small shoppes and boutiques, a town green with Wyken, Blynken and Nod fountain and quaint Victorian architectural details.
