CAROL R. SAIVETZ IS A
RESEARCH ASSOCIATE, at Harvard’s Davis Center for
Russian and Eurasian Studies,
and a Research Affiliate at MIT’s
Security Studies Program. She
holds a Ph.D. in Political Science
from Columbia University and
was a Lecturer in Government
at Harvard from 1992 to 2006.
Among her interests are Russian
policies in the Middle East and the
role of Russia in the Syrian civil
war. Last year Dr. Saivetz
participated in a dialogue
between the Russian and U.S.
Academies of Sciences on the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Arab
Spring, and other Middle East
issues. She has traveled to Israel
many times to speak on Middle
East dynamics, including a
presentation given to the Harvard
Alumni Club in Jerusalem.

CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS All cancellations must be made in writing to HAA Travels and are subject to a $350 non-refundable administrative fee. Cancellations received between 120 and 91 days prior to departure will be charged a fee in the amount of 20 percent of the program cost per person; those received between 90 and 61 days before departure, 50 percent; no refunds will be given for cancellations received within 60

MONDAY, OCTOBER 14
TEL AVIV / JERUSALEMArrive mid-afternoon in Tel Aviv and transfer to Jerusalem, one of the world’s most historic cities and central to the three great monotheistic faiths:Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.Accommodations are at the well-located David Citadel Hotel. This evening, gather for a welcome reception with introductory remarks by our study leader, followed by dinner.
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 15
JERUSALEMA short drive takes you to the Mount of Olives, with panoramic city views. Then stroll through the Ophel ArchaeologicalGardens where 25 layers of ruinsreveal 2,500 years of Jerusalem'shistory, including a 7th-century complex of royal palaces. Continue to the Western Wall, the only remaining part of the Second Jewish Temple complex that was destroyed in 70 C.E. After lunch, take a guided walk through the Jewish, Muslim, and Christian quarters. Follow the Via Dolorosa that traces the last steps of Jesus Christ, including the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. Also tour the Tower of David Museum near the Old City’s Jaffa Gate. Built into the medieval citadel, the museum showcases the long and complex history of Jerusalem. Dinner and the evening are at leisure.
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 16
JERUSALEM An optional early morning visit is arranged to the Dome of the Rock on Temple Mount, an area sacred to Jews and Muslims. Then time is reserved for a special meeting or visit before lunch. Spend the afternoon at Yad Vashem, where visits include the Avenue of the

Righteous, the Holocaust History Museum designed by Moshe Safdie, and the poignant Children’s Memorial. Tonight dine at a popular restaurant with invited guests.
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 17
JERUSALEM Depart for Bethlehem, perched on a hill at the edge of the Judean desert. See the Church of the Nativity, one of the holiest places in Christendom and a focal point of pilgrimages from all over the world. The church houses altars and shrines of Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, and Armenian denominations. Return to Jerusalem for lunch. This afternoon visit the Israel Museum to view the famed Dead Sea Scrolls, the Second Temple model depicting Jerusalem in 66 B.C.E., the Billy Rose Sculpture Garden, and contemporary galleries. The evening is at leisure.
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 18
JERUSALEMTravel south to the Dead Sea, passing the high cliffs near Qumran where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found. Upon arrivalat the ancient fortress of Masada,a cable car will take you to thetop of this breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage Site. A relaxing lunch is arranged at a kibbutz near the Dead Sea, with an opportunity to float in the buoyant mineral-rich waters, before returning to Jerusalem in the late afternoon. Gather this evening for a traditional Shabbat dinner at the hotel.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 19
JERUSALEM / TIBERIASDrive through the Jordan Valley to Beit She’an, the largest and best preserved Roman and Byzantine city in northern Israel. Ongoing excavations have uncovered a city center, mosaic floors, and colonnaded shopping streets. After a lunch in the countryside featuringlocally grown produce, continue north to see the Mount of Beatitudes and the ancient synagogue at Capernaum, the base of Jesus’ three-year ministry in Galilee. Conclude the day in the historic town of Tiberias, built by Herod in honor of the emperor of the same name, and which has become a quiet resort on the Sea of Galilee. Dinner and accommodations are at the historic Scots Hotel.
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 20
TIBERIASThis morning drive into the Golan Heights near the Syrian border for a briefing by a border guard. Continue on avineyard tour, followed by lunch in picturesque Rosh Pina. In the hilltop town of Safed (Tsfat), the spiritual center ofKabbala mysticism, stroll amongthe artist studios and workshops,and enjoy lovely views of the valley. Return to Tiberias to dine together at the hotel.
MONDAY, OCTOBER 21
TIBERIAS / TEL AVIV Depart for Megiddo, which gave rise to the concept of Armageddon. Tour the ancient city and, time permitting, the museum, located on the site. A rustic lunch is arranged at one of Israel’s finest vineyards, at the foot of the Carmel mountain ridge. Then discover the remains of Herod’s great Roman port city of Caesarea before continuing south alongthe coast to lively Tel Aviv, where we check in at the CarltonHotel, on the shores of the Mediterranean. This evening you may wish to dine at a local restaurant or attend a musical performance (pending final schedules).
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 22

TEL AVIV / JERUSALEMArrive mid-afternoon in Tel Aviv and transfer to Jerusalem, one of the world’s most historic cities and central to the three great monotheistic faiths:Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.Accommodations are at the well-located David Citadel Hotel. This evening, gather for a welcome reception with introductory remarks by our study leader, followed by dinner.
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 15
JERUSALEMA short drive takes you to the Mount of Olives, with panoramic city views. Then stroll through the Ophel ArchaeologicalGardens where 25 layers of ruinsreveal 2,500 years of Jerusalem'shistory, including a 7th-century complex of royal palaces. Continue to the Western Wall, the only remaining part of the Second Jewish Temple complex that was destroyed in 70 C.E. After lunch, take a guided walk through the Jewish, Muslim, and Christian quarters. Follow the Via Dolorosa that traces the last steps of Jesus Christ, including the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. Also tour the Tower of David Museum near the Old City’s Jaffa Gate. Built into the medieval citadel, the museum showcases the long and complex history of Jerusalem. Dinner and the evening are at leisure.

JERUSALEM Depart for Bethlehem, perched on a hill at the edge of the Judean desert. See the Church of the Nativity, one of the holiest places in Christendom and a focal point of pilgrimages from all over the world. The church houses altars and shrines of Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, and Armenian denominations. Return to Jerusalem for lunch. This afternoon visit the Israel Museum to view the famed Dead Sea Scrolls, the Second Temple model depicting Jerusalem in 66 B.C.E., the Billy Rose Sculpture Garden, and contemporary galleries. The evening is at leisure.
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 18
JERUSALEMTravel south to the Dead Sea, passing the high cliffs near Qumran where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found. Upon arrivalat the ancient fortress of Masada,a cable car will take you to thetop of this breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage Site. A relaxing lunch is arranged at a kibbutz near the Dead Sea, with an opportunity to float in the buoyant mineral-rich waters, before returning to Jerusalem in the late afternoon. Gather this evening for a traditional Shabbat dinner at the hotel.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 19
JERUSALEM / TIBERIASDrive through the Jordan Valley to Beit She’an, the largest and best preserved Roman and Byzantine city in northern Israel. Ongoing excavations have uncovered a city center, mosaic floors, and colonnaded shopping streets. After a lunch in the countryside featuringlocally grown produce, continue north to see the Mount of Beatitudes and the ancient synagogue at Capernaum, the base of Jesus’ three-year ministry in Galilee. Conclude the day in the historic town of Tiberias, built by Herod in honor of the emperor of the same name, and which has become a quiet resort on the Sea of Galilee. Dinner and accommodations are at the historic Scots Hotel.

TIBERIASThis morning drive into the Golan Heights near the Syrian border for a briefing by a border guard. Continue on avineyard tour, followed by lunch in picturesque Rosh Pina. In the hilltop town of Safed (Tsfat), the spiritual center ofKabbala mysticism, stroll amongthe artist studios and workshops,and enjoy lovely views of the valley. Return to Tiberias to dine together at the hotel.

TIBERIAS / TEL AVIV Depart for Megiddo, which gave rise to the concept of Armageddon. Tour the ancient city and, time permitting, the museum, located on the site. A rustic lunch is arranged at one of Israel’s finest vineyards, at the foot of the Carmel mountain ridge. Then discover the remains of Herod’s great Roman port city of Caesarea before continuing south alongthe coast to lively Tel Aviv, where we check in at the CarltonHotel, on the shores of the Mediterranean. JERUSALEMA short drive takes you to the Mount of Olives, with panoramic city views. Then stroll through the Ophel ArchaeologicalGardens where 25 layers of ruinsreveal 2,500 years of Jerusalem'shistory, including a 7th-century complex of royal palaces. Continue to the Western Wall, the only remaining part of the Second Jewish Temple complex that was destroyed in 70 C.E. After lunch, take a guided walk through the Jewish, Muslim, and Christian quarters. Follow the Via Dolorosa that traces the last steps of Jesus Christ, including the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. Also tour the Tower of David Museum near the Old City’s Jaffa Gate. Built into the medieval citadel, the museum showcases the long and complex history of Jerusalem. See the Church of the Nativity, one of the holiest places in Christendom and a focal point of pilgrimages from all over the world. The church houses altars and shrines of Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, and Armenian denominations. Return to Jerusalem for lunch. This afternoon visit the Israel Museum to view the famed Dead Sea Scrolls, the Second Temple model depicting Jerusalem in 66 B.C.E., the Billy Rose Sculpture Garden, and contemporary galleries. The evening is at leisure.

JERUSALEMTravel south to the Dead Sea, passing the high cliffs near Qumran where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found. Upon arrivalat the ancient fortress of Masada,a cable car will take you to thetop of this breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage Site. A relaxing lunch is arranged at a kibbutz near the Dead Sea, with an opportunity to float in the buoyant mineral-rich waters, before returning to Jerusalem in the late afternoon. After a lunch in the countryside featuringlocally grown produce, continue north to see the Mount of Beatitudes and the ancient synagogue at Capernaum, the base of Jesus’ three-year ministry in Galilee. Then discover the remains of Herod’s great Roman port city of Caesarea before continuing south alongthe coast to lively Tel Aviv, where we check in at the CarltonHotel, on the shores of the Mediterranean. TEL AVIVAn architectural tour introduces the UNESCO World Heritage “White City” with its Bauhaus and International style buildings dating from the 1930s. Following lunch, the afternoon is reserved for specially arranged meetings with local experts. Enjoy a cocktail party with local alums before dinner at leisure.

TEL AVIVAttend an early briefing with a Political Affairs Officer from the U.S. Embassy. Spend the late morning at the cultural hub of the city, the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, featuring works by van Gogh, Chagall, and Pissarro as well as Israeli artists. Lunch and the afternoon are at leisure. You may wish to explore the shops in the lively Old Portor join a walking tour of thehistoric Neve Tzedek area, with its galleries, boutiques, and cultural attractions. Then discover the remains of Herod’s great Roman port city of Caesarea before continuing south alongthe coast to lively Tel Aviv, where we check in at the CarltonHotel, on the shores of the Mediterranean. This evening you may wish to dine at a local restaurant or attend a musical performance (pending final schedules).
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 22
TEL AVIVAn architectural tour introduces the UNESCO World Heritage “White City” with its Bauhaus and International style buildings dating from the 1930s. Also visit the Israeli Museum at the Yitzhak Rabin Center, which traces the history of the State of Israel. Following lunch, the afternoon is reserved for specially arranged meetings with local experts. Enjoy a cocktail party with local alums before dinner at leisure.
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 23
TEL AVIVAttend an early briefing with a Political Affairs Officer from the U.S. Embassy. Spend the late morning at the cultural hub of the city, the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, featuring works by van Gogh, Chagall, and Pissarro as well as Israeli artists. Lunch and the afternoon are at leisure. You may wish to explore the shops in the lively Old Portor join a walking tour of thehistoric Neve Tzedek area, with its galleries, boutiques, and cultural attractions. Gather for a farewell dinner at one of the city’s best restaurants.

CAROL R. SAIVETZ IS A
RESEARCH ASSOCIATE, at Harvard’s Davis Center for
Russian and Eurasian Studies,
and a Research Affiliate at MIT’s
Security Studies Program. She
holds a Ph.D. in Political Science
from Columbia University and
was a Lecturer in Government
at Harvard from 1992 to 2006.
Among her interests are Russian
policies in the Middle East and the
role of Russia in the Syrian civil
war. Last year Dr. Saivetz
participated in a dialogue
between the Russian and U.S.
Academies of Sciences on the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Arab
Spring, and other Middle East
issues. She has traveled to Israel
many times to speak on Middle
East dynamics, including a
presentation given to the Harvard
Alumni Club in Jerusalem.
