Pimozide approved for Tourette's syndrome.
FDA Drug Bull 14:24-25, 1984
The Food and Drug Administration has approved pimozide (Orap), a neuroleptic drug, for the treatment of Tourette's syndrome in patients who cannot tolerate or do not respond to haloperidol. Pimozide prolongs the electrocardiogram (ECG) Q-T interval and is contraindicated in patients with congenital long Q-T syndrome, cardiac arrhythmia, and with drugs prolonging the Q-T interval. The label states that a dose of 0.3 mg/kg/day or 20 mg/day should not be exceeded. ECGs should be performed prior to administration of pimo- zide and periodically thereafter. In mice the drug produces a dose-related increase in pituitary tumors. Patients chronically exposed to pimozide can be expected to develop tardive dys- kinesia. Experience with patients under the age of 12 years is extremely limited.

Multistage skin carcinogenesis: A useful model for the study of the chemoprevention of cancer
Slaga TJ: Acta Pharmacol Toxicol (Copenh) 55(suppl 2):107-124, 1984
Carcinogenesis in humans is a subject of major political interest. All parties are seeking chemoprevention of cancer. This article from the University of Texas system discusses the utility of skin cancer as a model to study the general problem. Various inducers, or initiators, pzomoters, or en- hancers of cancer of the skin are discussed. The comparatively simple three-stage model is explained.

Radioisotopic studies concerning the efficacy of standard washing procedures for the cleansing of hair before zinc analysis
Buckley RA, Dreosti IE: Am J Clin Nutr 40:840- 846, 1984
Studies of the composition of hair are notorious and must be evaluated very carefully. In a manner suggesting ion ex- change, zinc was absorbed from solutions into hair, according to these studies. The authors explore the utility of hair samples as a means of estimating "nutritional zinc status" and con- elude that such studies are "inadvisable."
