P.C.A. Pimozide approved for Tourette's syndrome. FDA Drug Bull 14:24-25, 1984 The Food and Drug Administration has approved pimozide (Orap), a neuroleptic drug, for the treatment of Tourette's syndrome in patients who cannot tolerate or do not respond to haloperidol. Pimozide prolongs the electrocardiogram (ECG) Q-T interval and is contraindicated in patients with congenital long Q-T syndrome, cardiac arrhythmia, and with drugs prolonging the Q-T interval. The label states that a dose of 0.3 mg/kg/day or 20 mg/day should not be exceeded. ECGs should be performed prior to administration of pimo- zide and periodically thereafter. In mice the drug produces a dose-related increase in pituitary tumors. Patients chronically exposed to pimozide can be expected to develop tardive dys- kinesia. Experience with patients under the age of 12 years is extremely limited. J.G.S. All parties are seeking chemoprevention of cancer. This article from the University of Texas system discusses the utility of skin cancer as a model to study the general problem. Various inducers, or initiators, pzomoters, or en- hancers of cancer of the skin are discussed. The comparatively simple three-stage model is explained. P.C.A. In a manner suggesting ion ex- change, zinc was absorbed from solutions into hair, according to these studies.
