DESIGN

GRAPHIC DESIGN CERTIFICATE OF ACHIEVEMENTCompletion of the Graphic Design Certificate of Achievement will provide you with basic skills in graphic design and give you a solid understanding of the creative process and how to effectively problem solve. Please note: this is not an industry-approved certificate.

Graphic Design Certificate courses are more flexible and less rigorous than degree courses, and allow students to move through the learning pathway at their own pace. You will develop your technical and conceptual skills as you work through projects; gain a solid understanding of visual communications and the design process; build your portfolio and learn how to market your work successfully. All courses are taught by practicing designers with real-world experiences and knowledge.

The annual schedule of Graphic Design Certificate courses is here. These courses each need a minimum enrollment to run.

To qualify for your Graphic Design Certificate of Achievement, attend all required classes and successfully complete every project in the seven required courses plus one elective. Based on your attendance and your projects, you will be marked as Pass or No Pass for each course. You must pass all required courses and the elective in order to receive your certificate.

NOTE: The Graphic Design Certificate of Achievement through Extended Studies at ACAD will accept up to one course substitution from an outside institution. It is up to the student to supply us with the outside institutions’ course description including the course hours, and an official record of their final mark in the course, for approval.

Please refer to page 24 for certificate application procedures.

DESIGN + DRAW A BACKYARD SHELTERINSTRUCTOR Gerald Forseth

Personalized, quirky little buildings in the back yard are a delightful landscaping trend. A small structure in your back yard can add architectural interest as well as function to your garden, but starting from scratch can be intimidating – and pre-packaged plans just don’t pack a visual punch. Begin here with the help of an architect to design your shed, folly, gazebo, doghouse, hot tub enclosure, tree fort, chicken coop, or play house with style and with a budget. You will develop your ideas into usable construction plans, and learn to estimate the cost of the materials. Lecture and discussion on architectural styles, design aesthetics and practicalities, materials new and recycled, bylaws, principles and tips for structural soundness and things to consider before you start will lead to your final design expressed in construction drawings and materials list with costs. You will be ready to build it yourself or with a contractor. Please see your course supply list online. Be sure to come prepared to your first class.

The figure is unequalled in its boundless forms of expression. Enhance your knowledge and improve your figurative work by grasping the body’s underlying structure and how it creates the dynamics of form. You will employ techniques such as landmarking to the application of your anatomical understanding to add clarity to observational life drawing. CLASSICAL DRAWING TECHNIQUESINSTRUCTOR John Chong

The classical method of drawing will provide you with a systematic, step-by-step process to represent what your eye sees. Typically, beginners of representational drawing confuse what the eye sees with what the mind thinks it sees. That confusion of information hinders accurate representational drawing. Employing the classical method of drawing will enhance your natural visual skills by keeping your thinking mind busy with an analytic process of observation. That objective process augments the visual authority of what you actually see and will aid you in achieving accurate representational drawing. Please see your course supply list online. Be sure to come prepared for the first class.

THE MAGIC OF LOW TECH PHOTOGRAPHY INSTRUCTOR Dianne Bos

Photogram, pinhole, plastic or toy cameras are all photographic devices that have been lumped into this low-tech category. Perhaps as a reaction against ‘the digital’, many contemporary artists are using these alternative image-making techniques. In the right hands, they can create ‘high art!’ or at least very original imagery. Explore these processes – without the use of a camera, play with light and make your own photograms. Experience the magic of pinhole photography by making your own camera, shooting and processing black and white prints – an easy way to learn darkroom techniques. Many examples of photograms, pinhole cameras, toy cameras and work by contemporary photographers will be shown. Please see your course supply list online. Be sure to come prepared for the first class.

FIRST YEAR STUDIES COURSES FOR CREDIT

First Year Studies courses are foundation level credit courses that are regularly offered within ACAD’s full-time day program, as well as through Extended Studies. They do not require pre-requisites, but some review is required before acceptance into your first studio course for credit through Extended Studies. You may follow any one of three options:

• Submit a copy of a previously earned diploma or degree to Extended Studies

• Present a small portfolio (6-7 pieces or work showing variety of mediums and techniques) in a one-on-one meeting with the program head

• Attend a one-on-one meeting with the program head to discuss your intent.

Please contact Extended Studies for procedures and deadlines for each of these options.

Credit courses offered through Extended Studies are taught by regular ACAD faculty members and are equivalent to courses in our full-time day program. Attendance is kept and projects are marked. Homework is required and you will be expected to fully participate in all critical discussions in your class. You may apply these course credits toward an ACAD degree by meeting ACAD requirements for admission, which include a portfolio review and submission of your academic transcript.

FYS courses through Extended Studies provide you with the opportunity to begin your art or design studies on a part-time basis and with more scheduling flexibility. We welcome students from the community and ACAD students who find this schedule appropriate for their needs.
