Welcome

I’m delighted to introduce this exciting and varied set of workshops on offer from the Academic Development team for 2018-19. The workshops cover elements of learning and teaching design and enhancement, researcher development and staff development and HEA accreditation. I’m certain you will find plenty here to develop your educational practice, and to stimulate reflection and debate.

This is also a chance for me to say a bit about KIITE (the Keele Institute for Innovation and Teaching Excellence) which now hosts this team and its provision.

KIITE has been set up by the University to draw together four areas of educational enhancement: Academic Development, Student Learning, Employability and Employer Engagement and Learning Technology are now situated within KIITE to maximise the cross-cutting expertise we have in curricular and co-curricular design. I’m really proud to be KIITE’s inaugural director, after having set up and run a similar institute at the University of Leeds, where we developed a reputation for impactful pedagogical research and teaching innovation.

KIITE will act first and foremost act as a community of educational innovators. It will draw together the four expert educational teams, our Keele teaching award holders, NTFs and our senior and principal HEA fellows. Our Associate Deans LandT, School Learning and Teaching Directors and Liaison Librarians will be closely affiliated with the Institute, and Student Voice reps will always form part of our project teams. KIITE will also be at the forefront of delivering the refreshed education strand of the Keele strategy, working in constant dialogue with our PVC Student Education, Helen O’Sullivan, on themes such as Social Learning, the Civic Curriculum and Work-based learning.

By setting up these cross-cutting relationships and supporting institutional projects, we are here to help academic and professional staff co-design a brilliant Keele curriculum and provide vibrant co-curricular opportunities to our students.

One of the first things we are setting up is a KIITE Programme Design Consultancy. This is, essentially, a service to programme leads as they nurture new programmes through approval, design and deployment. This will get going in the new academic year (we are already supporting the development of an MBA programme in KMS and guiding the Joint Vet School project, as pilots). Soon, you will notice the development of the KIITE website, which will profile Keele’s educational ethos and the projects, case-studies and pedagogies that develop from it, broadcasting our innovation to the sector. KIITE conferences, work-in-progress seminars and masterclasses will be unveiled as the new year unfolds.

To find out more, and contribute to this new Institute: keep your eye out for KIITE events and opportunities: we aim to fly high

Well-crafted and delivered continuation of professional development is important as it delivers benefits to the individual, their profession and the organisation. It helps ensure that a person continues to be competent in their chosen profession. It should be an ongoing process throughout an individual’s career.

Continuing to develop professional skills benefits an individual by better preparing them to further their career path, increasing confidence and motivation through achievements and personal growth and providing a sense of direction and improved focus. Analysing strengths and areas for development allows an individual to identify the development programme best suited to their needs.

This brochure is designed to help staff and their managers identify workshops, events or accredited programmes that will provide the skills required for the next step of their career. Mapping Your Continuing Professional Development outlines two nationally recognised frameworks designed to assist when deciding on a development activity to undertake.

It is important to identify the development activities that you wish to attend at the earliest opportunity as many are only held once a year. Early booking is also recommended as places are limited.

If you would like to talk to a member of the Academic Development team about you or your teams’ development needs please get in touch.

We appreciate your feedback and encourage staff to contact the team with their thoughts, opinions and ideas in relation to the learning and development opportunities offered by the Academic Development team to staff members at Keele University.

Mapping your CPD is a great way to identify your strengths and areas for development. Throughout this brochure we have mapped workshops and other activities to two nationally-recognised frameworks; the UK Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF) and the Researcher Development Framework (RDF).

Mapping is identified using a key. The key indicates which framework the workshop is mapped to as well as the specific areas of the framework. Please see How to Use this Brochure for further information on using the key.

What is the UKPSF?The UKPSF is a framework for benchmarking success within Higher Education teaching and learning support. The framework is managed and led by the Higher Education Academy (HEA).

The Framework aims to aspire and drive improvement in, and raise the profile of, learning and teaching in Higher Education by:1 Supporting the initial and continuing

professional development of staff engaged in teaching and supporting learning

2 Fostering dynamic approaches to teaching and learning through creativity, innovation and continuous development in diverse academic and/or professional settings

3 Demonstrating to students and other stakeholders the professionalism that staff and institutions bring to teaching and support for student learning

4 Acknowledging the variety and quality of teaching, learning and assessment practices that support and underpin student learning

5 Facilitating individuals and institutions in gaining formal recognition for quality enhanced approaches to teaching and supporting learning, often as part of wider responsibilities that may include research and/or management activities

Further information, including access to the UKPSF in full, can be found at www.heacademy.ac.uk/ukpsf

What is the RDF?The RDF is a tool developed by VITAE for promoting, planning and supporting the career, personal and professional development of researchers. The framework describes the knowledge, behaviours and attributes required of successful, all-round researchers, encouraging them to aspire to excellence and achieve their potential.

Split into four domains and twelve subdomains, the RDF provides a way for researchers to benchmark their current knowledge and identify areas for future development. Each subdomain contains descriptors which encompass personal and professional skills, knowledge and qualities required to conduct research and become an accomplished researcher. Each descriptor contains three to five phases, representing distinct stages of development or levels of performance.

Further information, including access to the RDF in full, can be found at www.vitae.ac.uk/rdf

TBL has been described by Sibley (2015) as a ‘powerful form of small group learning. Students come to class prepared and then spend the bulk of the class time engaged in activities that help them learn how to use course content to solve problems’. Over the past 20 months we have trialled Team-Based Learning (TBL) in the Science Foundation Year, Chemistry, Forensic Science and Medicine with positive student and staff feedback, good learning outcomes and improved student engagement. In the first half of this workshop you will have an opportunity to take part in a TBL session to see for yourself how it is structured and organised. In the second part Keele staff already using TBL will give you some guidance about how convert an existing module into a TBL module, discuss types of teaching and learning we have found that it is best utilized, and attempt to answer any questions you have about TBL. Following on from this session those wishing to undertake the TBL transition will be offered the help of a mentor.
