Message from the Principal's Desk“Life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.”

- Khalil GibranDear Readers,Warmest greetings of the Season! It is a pleasure to pen down the foreword of the second edition of Reflection. NPS Yelahanka has been

progressively marching under the pedagogic sun. The bygone months have been packed with myriad activities being conducted in an invigorating and purposeful environment; which kept the learners highly agile and attentive.

Our initiatives have been child-centric and growth-centric, providing a platform for holistic development. In present days and time, knowledge and information is available aplenty through various sources but what we need to build up is the motor skills and nurture the latent talents; which are the genesis for a future that a child can confidently march into. As far as these skills are concerned, every child is unique and we ensure that equal opportunity is provided. Furthermore, going by the need of the hour, we have also taken ample safety measures within the school precincts and are constantly making efforts to provide a propitious atmosphere for our students.

I sincerely thank each of you for your unstinted co operation and hope that you will continue to support in our endeavours.

Wish you all a Happy New Year!

Montessori Memoirs Our busy bees have been working industriously on the

development of various skills .

Practical life exercises: Help develop concentration, co-ordination, order and independence. Children enjoy working with these materials as always.

Sensorial exercises: Children learn through their senses. They can appreciate colour or texture differences; organize their thoughts and objects in the environment.

Numbers all around: Children are learning linear counting along with concepts like missing numbers, what comes before and after and odd and even.

2

In our classrooms we ensure that children develop the fundamental skills in language development - LSRW [Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing]. Our oral enrichment program includes - Circle time, songs and rhymes, I spy games, story time. Our little ones have started recognising the initial and ending sounds of the letters. They associate with the letters and record it in their note books.

Along with the above, they are learning about our planet Earth - continents, flags of different countries and oceans.

Kindergarten “K”ronicles

Best behaviourKindergarten children excel just not in academics but in their behaviour as well. This being the right age to groom them, teachers have taken an extra step to monitor these aspects and award the best behaved child once a week. Children eagerly wait to take their favourite toy home!

Fun with counters Math is fun. Tailoring math instruction in the early years will benefit all the children. The tiny tots enjoyed counting numbers orally and even playing a game.

“Dramatic Effect”The pre-primary teachers enacted two stories for our toddlers. The show was a runaway success as our tiny tots gleamed with joy.

‘Trip'ping TreatAll had a rollicking time during a day out at Jus’ Trufs, an innovative chocolaterie located at Jakkur. The informative and illuminating facts generated interest among all. The mirth written all over their faces during this field trip spoke volumes of the enthralling time that they experienced there.

stThe 21 of November, 2014 was a special day at NPS, Yelahanka as it was our Pre-primary sports day and the entire school sported a festive look and spirit. As the radiant sun smiled upon us, parents turned out in great numbers to cheer our little ones the tiny tots showed off their skills, bringing in loud cheers and applause from all present. The entire Kindergarten and Montessori strength of 129 students participated in the non-competitive sports extravaganza that showcased their talents and creativity. They displayed

their classroom learning on the tracks in their own flamboyant style in events based on colours, events encouraging teamwork and tested their dexterity. The final highlight of the day was the parents' and grandparents' event wherein all the parents and grandparents were as enthusiastic as their children as they joined in the fun. At the end of it, each one was a winner.

Practical and hands on learning experience reinforced the concept of ‘Weavers’ that was learnt by the second graders in the classroom by weaving mats using paper strips. This was further enhanced by visiting a loom in the vicinity.

Students of Grade 2 were give a print out of plain shapes and were asked to use their creativity to form objects/figures using their imagination. Children came out with pictures like rocket, Christmas scene.

Grade 1 students made an envelope and wrote a personalized letter to their parents acknowledging all the things that they have done for them. The first graders were thrilled to visit the post office, paste a stamp and post letters to their parents. This was done to build awareness of the functioning and importance of the post office. The tiny tots got back to us with their awareness brimming with the appropriate description of the postman and the post office.

This activity led to extended knowledge as the s t u d e n t s l e a r n t a b o u t community helpers - the people who help us on a daily basis, our driver, postman, watchman, and policeman.

As a part of the learning experience, the students of Grade III showcased their creative abilities by using used various materials like clay, hay, beads, etc. to draw and decorate insects. Furthermore, we had our very own in-house chefs who enjoyed making dishes like Salads, Bhel and

Sandwich. The objective of the event was to inculcate healthy food habits and awareness regarding the choice of food among children.

Grade IV enthusiasts learnt about the types of clouds through an activity. They used various recycled materials to depict Cirrus, Stratus and Cumulus clouds.

Students of Class VI learnt Hindi in a fun way by integrating their lesson - Kala Ka Samman, with Art.

Students of grade III and IV displayed their team work and learnt about various concepts on fractions. Different fractions were represented using different coloured sheets.

We believe in integrating our subjects by building a bridge between Scholastic and Co-Scholastic subjects. These activities help to motivate, kindle and discover the hidden talents in the young minds. Such skills help them to pursue a hobby.

The integrated thematic projects in grades 6, 7, 8 and 9 helped students hone their skills like creativity, innovation and problem-solving in order to come up with thoughtful solutions to global challenges. The presentation of research varied from graphic organizers, fish bone technique, poems to skits, ppts , debates and comic strips, The themes for the first term were 'Conservation of Water', 'Global Warming', 'Carbon Footprints' and 'Save Tigers'.

Fifth graders designed the cover page of the lesson “An Equal Share” written by Vaikom Muhammed Basheer. They created within themselves the need to share the world with the flora and fauna selflessly.

Model United Nations, also known as Model UN or MUN, is an extra-curricular activity in which students typically role-play delegates to the United Nations and simulate UN committees.

We as delegates, were fortunate to have Sri Lanka and Saudi Arabia as our designated countries in both BMUN and SMUN . We were presented with

assignments in advance, along with a topic that our committees discussed, researched and then debated with our fellow delegates. It was one of the greatest learning experiences for all of us. It brought out the leaders in us and gave us an outstanding exposure.

thA Book Fair was conducted on October 11 thand 18 . Parents and students were invited to participate in this event. The

Book Fair was held to invigorate the students with the fire of reading and make books a significant part of their lives. It was also a way to urge parents to encourage

their children to read books.

The Book Fair was deemed a success with parents showing enthusiasm for the initiative taken by the School.

It was happy to note that students showed a marked eagerness to read books after the Book Fair. The learners were seen going

i n t o the Library frequently and checking the latest picks.

Independence Day

“Freedom has its life in the hearts, the actions, the spirit of men and so it must be daily earned and refreshed- else like a flower cut from its life giving roots, it will wither and die.”

t hNPS ce lebra ted our mothe r l and ' s 68 Independence Day through a riveting theatrical performance by 'DRAMEBAAZ' -the dramatics club. The play was entitled 'The Masterpiece' and it voiced the concern over the possibility of the severity of the freedom struggle waning with the passage of time.

This was followed by p a t r i o t i c s o n g s t h a t resounded in the air thus e n t h u s i n g a s p i r i t o f nationhood.

Deepavali

Deepavali - "lines of light”- symbolizes the victory of light over dark. Light, being symbol of hope and positive energy, indicates the victory of good over evil.

The festival of lights was celebrated with much zeal and gusto. The corridors irradiated with candle lights which were lit by our learners. Multi hued bulletin boards, embellished classrooms and a well planned assembly added to the beauty and essence of the festival.

8

Kannada Rajyotsava

The special assembly on Kannada Rajyotsava brought afresh the memories of great legends of our s ta te . Eminent personal i t ies l ike Kittur Rani Chennamma, Sri Vishweshwariah, Kempe Gowda and Kuvempu were impersonated by the tiny tots. Furthermore an outstanding fancy dress parade, sublime speeches and dazzling dance performances were a part of the assembly.

The students at NPS had a very special treat in store for them this year. The teaching staff was at its creative and humorous best as they took over the stage by putting up a skit that tickled the children a lot. This was followed by the singing of mellifluous songs and a dance performance.

Children's Day

Let me ask you something, what is not art?

The aim of every artist is to arrest motion, which is life, by artificial means and hold it fixed so that a hundred years later, when a stranger looks at it, it moves again since it is life.

- William Faulkner

Creativity was at its best as First through Ninth graders were engrossed in drawing their masterpiece. Art day was celebrated with great elan. Diverse themes were given to students in advance and each one came well prepared to exhibit her/his unique perception. It was sheer joy to watch all the learners participate enthusiastically in this fest.

“Creative Corner”

Off to Grade five on the third day,Of the first week of MayAll of my friends, old and newOut of which I can name only a fewSmart girls and naughty boysAll chattering with joy. The teacher comes in and says 'hi'! With a big smile, “Hi” we cry! She dances, sings and teaches with joy Till we are too exhausted to walk.

We read, learn and write along with herShe tells us the story of a crow and a pitcher. We all talk, read, yell and laugh So much that we need a handkerchief to cough.

While we are having so much funWe fail to notice the end of the termWith tears in our eyes, “goodbye”, we sayOur dear friends and teaches meet we may

Now we are in class six;And are in for a real fixFor there are exams very hardAnd marks to be scored in report card !!!!!

Imagine

Imagine there’s no natureOnly stumps of trees,Only the respiratorsTo let the creatures breathe.

Imagine all the people:-Choking in the air,Imagine all the birds,Flying homelessThat’s not fair!!!!

I hope some day you’ll join me,we’ll change the atmosphere,By singing this poem,And helping change the sphere.

Clean SelfCleaning myself every day,When I wake up and after I play,Before I sleep and before I eat,I wash my dirty hands and feet.

Washing my hands really well,On the germs I cast a spell,Washing my face and my feet,Keeps me very clean and neat.

Cutting my nails, brushing my hair,Brushing my teeth because I care,Bathing and washing every day,Keeps all the germs away.

As soon as our Geography teacher announced that we were going on a field trip, the class erupted with cheers. Field trips have always been my most favourite part about school [right next to free periods of course!]. None of us could stop talking about the trip until the day finally came. The zest continued throughout the journey to Vani Educational Institute where the rock museum we were going to, was located.

Most of the school probably envied us as we got to go on a field trip!

Stepping out of the bus, our first sight of the plethora of science exhibits exhilarated us. Zealously we made our way to 'Darwin's Hut' where we saw a few minerals. The next place was rock museum. I found it amusing how most of the rocks were naturally formed exactly in that spot considering most of them were made of dried magma.

A vivacious teacher guided us to a room with spine chilling organs like a sheep's heart! After this, came the part where we explored the exhaustingly large variety of plants. Finally the time all were waiting for came- the exhibits. This was the most fun part about the trip and we even got to try out some of them. After this three hour tour, all of us were hungry and tired but soon regained our energy after lunch.

On the way back to school, all we could talk about was how amazing the trip was. Sleep is on my eyes but my enthusiastic mind refuses to rest. Let me try to catch a nap!

Dear Diary,

Helping is the best way!Once upon a time in a jungle there lived an elephant, a rat, a bear, a rabbit and a monkey. They were great friends. The elephant was chubby, the bear was strong, the rabbit was wise, the monkey was kind and the rat was independent.

12

- Sai Prapthi, Ayushi Kalmath, Rushil KantGrade III

One day the rat saw the elephant fallen in a pit of mud, he quickly went and informed the bear, rabbit and monkey. They were shocked to hear the rat say this and rushed with him to help the elephant. When they saw the elephant in the pit, the wise rabbit pondered for a minute and told the monkey to bring a rope.

When the monkey brought the rope, the rabbit told him to tie the rope on the branch of the tree. When the monkey tied the rope on the branch, the rabbit told the elephant to hold on tight to the rope. When the elephant did so, the bear, rabbit and the monkey pulled the rope on the other side as the rabbit had instructed. They pulled with all their might and the elephant was at last freed! Moral : We should always help our friends !!!!!

Short Story

A starry starry night

[Alex has had a pretty sad life. He comes from a very poor background. His parents died when he was just a kid. His Grandpa was his only family. With the tragic death of his grandpa a few months back, life couldn't get any worse. But soon, he discovers a secret. One that is about to change his life forever.]

“I really NEED this job!!” I pleaded.

“Fine, last chance.” Boss said.

I took the money home. Not much of a home, really. A refrigerator and telly lounge. Oh how I wished Grandpa was here! We could have celebrated. I still remember how he used to animatedly narrate his quests as a sailor. Lying under the starry sky, he spoke of a legacy that would come my way someday. It was such a make belief world and I loved every bit of it.

13

But with the passage of time, he slowly withered away. “Stars. Night” , he kept on saying a couple of months ago.

I got the call when I was at work. The local newspaper described it as “Hit and run”.

My only way to get into the scene was by my bicycle. [That reminds me I need a new one.]

At the hospital, he murmured – “Starry starry night”. The only thing that I could think of when he said that was a memory of us under the starry dome. I wasn't getting any sleep. I gazed at the stars and thought about how I would live without him. He was the only family I had.

Well now I was stuck being a guide at the Van Gogh museum.

Now I get up at five every morning and reach the museum. The first few days were easy. Nobody had queries. They just looked at the paintings. Then they told me that I needed to know the paintings.

After my research, the job got tougher. I couldn't remember much about the paintings. Except one------ a painting about stars. It intrigued me the first time I saw it. I didn't find much about it on Google though!

An old man asked me about it one day. I told him what I knew about it and he went away. But something caught my eye. Behind the painting there was a lock- like a metal bar. I went in for a closer look and found a gap behind. First, I thought about asking the manager but then I felt like investigating it myself.

I left early that day. My grandpa's words kept haunting me “starry night” and I wondered whether the painting had to do something with what he had said.

The next day, I got to the museum on time and spent most of my time trying to figure out how to take the painting off its stand. I didn't want to damage it.

I hid inside the faculty cupboard during the closing hours. Once all left, I worked my way to the painting section. I had disabled the heat monitors before the museum closed. While fidgeting with the bar behind the painting, I do not know what I did but the lock clicked open and the painting swung open like the door of a vault.

The next hurdle was to guess a password. “Van Gogh” crossed my mind but it didn't work! Then the obvious hit me ------“starry night”! I rotated the dials and the vault cracked open. A cloud of dust blew on my countenance.

My subconscious looked forward to treasures of distant lands but my eyes looked upon a ream of paper. On closer examination, they were bonds worth millions!!!

Then the pangs of doubt crept into my heart. “Was this mine or the government's?”

With starry eyes , I convinced my soul “They are MINE”. Ah! I could see a different life ahead of you.

A life without books is dull and boring. Reading improves knowledge, comprehension and vocabulary. As Sir Francis Bacon has rightly remarked, “ Reading maketh a full man.”

The one nation reading together event, sponsored by Scholastics India thLtd., was celebrated on the 28 of November '2014 at NPS, Yelahanka,

wherein children of the school gathered together to celebrate books and the pleasures of reading. As a part of the event, the students began the day with a 95-

word scholastic reading pledge to reaffirm their commitment to reading good books. It was followed by a talk and a literary quiz to arouse the

interest of children in good literature. The entire school, including the faculty, spent one hour in the morning, just reading books of their choice. The students of grades 7, 8 and 9 had

the opportunity to interact with the renowned author, Ms. Kavitha Mandana. Our guest speaker for the day spent quality time with the children, reading excerpts from her recent novel, 'Number 9 on the shade card' and patiently answered their queries. It was a pleasurable and enriching

expe r ience fo r a l l a t school. It impressed upon children the significance of books and the habit of reading.

A National Affair!

Un Film Amusant

Learning a new foreign language may not always be fun. It is difficult and requires tons of hard work! But our wonderful French teacher did something that definitely jazzed up our class! When she announced that we were going to watch a movie, no one knew what to expect. Would we understand anything? Will the movie be too boring? Well, these were a few questions which filled our mind before viewing the film. But then, Voila! All our questions were

abandoned after watching this humorous movie, lePetit Nicolas featuring the adventures of a little boy and his friends and family.

This movie, inspired by the famous books written by René Goscinny, is about Nicolasand his five close friends - Agnan: le chouchou(teacher's pet), Geoffroy: the rich kid, Alceste: who's always hungry, Rufus, and Clotaire: who wasn't exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer(but he was our favorite character)! We viewed the film with loads of interest and though we couldn't understand some of it, we always knew what was worth laughing our heads off for!

But the movie was not the end! We learnt more things through fun activities like a “movie quiz” and work sheet based on the movie, which improved both our vocabulary and interest in this movie. It was a chouette learning experience! We all cherished the movie thoroughly and hope to see its sequel soon!
