Extraordinary General Meeting, 18 June 2015
Academy Council has decided to hold an ExtraordinaryGeneral Meeting (EGM) on Thursday, 18 June 2015 to admitnew Fellows.
The EGM will be held at 7:00 p.m. at the Council Chamber,10th Floor, Hong Kong Academy of Medicine Jockey ClubBuilding, 99 Wong Chuk Hang Road, Aberdeen, Hong Kong.All Fellows are encouraged to attend.
MPS‐HKAM Excellence in Patient Safety Award
"Promoting innovation in risk management,professionalism and medical ethics"
Nature of the AwardThe MPS‐HKAM Excellence in Patient Safety Award is jointlyorganized by the Medical Protection Society (MPS) and theHong Kong Academy of Medicine (HKAM). The objective ofthe Award is to encourage medical professionals to promotethe subject of patient safety, risk reduction, quality andprofessional standards, and medical ethics.
Who is Eligible for the Award?Medical practitioners registered in Hong Kong, who submit papers on any of thefollowing topics, are eligible for the Award:
Patient safetyRisk reductionQuality and professional standardsMedical ethics
A plaque and a cheque for HK$20,000 will be award to the winning author, whowill be notified 2 weeks prior to the presentation ceremony.
Application will open on 15 June 2015 and close on 15 September 2015. Please press here for details of application and submission of paper.
The paper, entitled "Transforming quality andpatient safety in specimen identification andprocessing through a novel approach to barcodetracking" by Dr. K.C. Lee was selected in 2014. Dr.Lee received the plaque and cheque presentedby the Academy's Editor, Prof. Ignatius Yu.

NewsVisit from SIMTAC
An eight‐member delegation led by Dr. Loo Shi, the Medical Director of theSimulation and Integrated Medical Training Advancement Centre (SIMTAC) ofthe National Healthcare Group, Singapore, visited the HKJC ILCM on 14 April2015. The delegation comprised 2 doctors and other administrative, technicaland curriculum support staff.
The SIMTAC delegation was warmly received by representatives from theAcademy, the HKJC ILCM and the HKJC DPRI. Dr. Lau Chor‐chiu, HonorarySecretary of the Academy, Dr. Chan Tung‐ning, Honorary Assistant Director ofthe HKJC ILCM, and Dr. Kevin Hung, Director of the HKJC DPRI, toured thedelegation around the HKJC ILCM and the Igloo, and introduced the centrefacilities thoroughly. Ideas were exchanged between the two centres onvarious aspects ranging from the perspectives of medical faculty to detailedoperational matters. The overall philosophy, vision and purposes, nature andneeds of clientele, as well as the strategies, structure and operations of theHKJC ILCM were also elucidated and conveyed to the SIMTAC.
The visit enhanced understanding and bolstered the linkage between the HKJCILCM and the SIMTAC. Both centres looked forward to future collaborations.

Cancer Prevention and Screening Press Conference, 22 April 2015
The Department of Health recently launched a new publicity campaign oncancer prevention and screening with the academia, medical professionals andnon‐governmental organizations. The aim of this campaign is to raise publicawareness on primary and secondary prevention of cancer in preparation forthe roll‐out of the Colorectal Cancer Screening Pilot Programme (CRC SPP) by
the end of 2015 the earliest. Some cancer‐related presentations weredelivered by Dr. Constance Chan, Prof. Francis Chan, Prof. Gabriel Leung andDr. Regina Ching.
Vice President of the Hong Kong College of Family Physicians, Dr. David Chaoattended the press conference on behalf of the Academy.
Public Lecture by Mr. James Badenoch, QC, 5 May 2015
The Academy, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicineand Faculty of Law of The University of HongKong proudly co‐organised a joint public lecturedelivered by Mr. James Badenoch, QC, entitled"The Doctor's Duty of Disclosure and theDecline of Bolam: A Dramatic Change in the Law
on Patient Consent".
Mr. Badenoch took silk in 1989 and was leadCounsel for the successful plaintiff in theMontgomery case. He shared his insights on theimplications of Montgomery for the newstandard for the duty of disclosure owed bydoctors to their patients. The topic attracted
hundreds of practising medical practitionersand lawyers, who were inspired by the talk.
Vice President (General Affairs) Prof. T.F. Fokwrote an article, recently published in MingPao, summarising the key elements of the talkand the aspects of high sensitivity towards thepatient‐centric standard of care. Please clickhere to view the full text.
Events Attended by the PresidentDigby Memorial Lecture, 10 April 2015
President attended the Digby Memorial Lecture organised bythe Department of Surgery of the Li Ka Shing Faculty ofMedicine, The University of Hong Kong. Mr. Norman Chan,Chief Executive of Hong Kong Monetary Authority delivered alecture, entitled "Who Would Mortgage Their Children". DigbyMemorial Lecture was established in 1961 in honour ofProfessor Kenelm Hutchison Digby, who was first to makeacademic and professional contributions to surgery in Hong Kong.

Health Carnival, 11 April 2015
President officiated the Opening Ceremony of the Health Carnival organised byThe Provisional Hong Kong Academy of Nursing. The aims of this activity wereto enrich the concept of community health to people of Hong Kong andposition nurses' contribution to our community. The Carnival features over 25booths, with the participation of 14 Specialty Colleges of the PHKAN. Otherofficiating guests included Dr. Ko Wing‐man, Prof. Sophia Chan, Dr. C.H. Leongand other prominent medical leaders.

Annual Academic Meeting of the Committee of General Practice, Cross‐StraitsMedicine Exchange Association, 16‐18 April 2015
President participated in the Annual AcademicMeeting of the Committee of General Practice,Cross‐Straits Medicine Exchange Associationheld in Suzhou from 16 April to 18 April 2015.During the Conference, Dr. Li also visited asuccessful 1,000 bed private hospital KowloonHospital in Suzhou wholly owned by a HongKong family.
The Hong Kong Jockey Club Community Day Races and Luncheon, 19 April2015
President attended the annual Hong Kong Jockey Club Community Day Racesand Luncheon in Sha Tin Racecourse on behalf of the Academy. Openingspeeches were delivered by Chief Secretary for Administration, the Hon Mrs.Carrie Lam and Chairman of the HKJC, Dr. Simon Ip. The Community Day Raceshad great support from hundreds of representatives from governmentagencies, NGOs and the community.

Multi‐specialty Medical Mega Conference Fifth Round (M3C 5.0), 25 April2015
In coordination with 39 prestigious specialtysocieties and associations, the Association ofPrivate Medical Specialists of Hong Kongorganised the Multi‐specialty Medical MegaConference at the Langham Place Hotel.President showed his support by participatingin the Conference. The aim of this Conferencewas to provide a platform for all specialists andmedical practitioners to mingle and obtainuseful information at a wide spectrum ofmedical specialties which are of their interests.

During the Conference, Dr. Li and Prof. Lau alsoattended the International Dignitaries Breakfastand the 9th Annual International Forum held atthe Westin Boston Waterfront Hotel. The themeof the Forum was about "Geriatrics: Care of theElderly". Topics covered the provision of elderlycare, geriatrics education in both undergraduate
and postgraduate medical education and national support provided the elderlywith regard to social security retirement income as well as healthcareinsurance, etc. Discussions attended by over 100 attendees were fruitful.
Meetings with CMS and HSPH, 30 April and 1 May 2015
President led a 5‐member delegation from HKAM toBoston. The delegation consisted of the President,Vice President (Education and Examinations) Prof. C.S.Lau, Honorary Secretary Dr. C.C. Lau, Member ofManagement Committee of HKJCILCM Dr. Danny Lukand Director of HKJCDPRI Dr. Kevin Hung. Thedelegation spent the whole day at the Centre forMedical Simulation (CMS) to understand more aboutits daily operation and the courses that providetraining in debriefing skills. The delegation alsoexplored closer collaboration between HKAM and CMSin medical simulation and education. During the visit, President and thedelegation were invited to a plaque unveiling ceremony held at the CMS. TheObservation Room is dedicated to HKAM for our support and collaborationwith the CMS.

The delegation also paid a visit to the Harvard T.H.Chan School of Public Health (HSPH) and met withDean Julio Frenk, as well as Members of FXB Center forHealth and Human Right. Progress on the HKJCDPRIproject was updated at a lunch meeting, and a closerworking relationship between HKJCDPRI and Harvardwould be expected. The delegation ended the visitwith a meeting with Executive Director of AriadneLabs, Dr. Atul Gawande. Ariadne Labs is committed tocreating scalable healthcare solutions that producebetter care at the most critical moments in people's lives, everywhere.

To further enhance the online services for CMECPD, theAcademy has developed a mobile application for capturingattendance ‐ iCMECPD App. It is now available at Apple's AppStore and Google's Play. Fellows may download the App byscanning the respective QR code below (or search "icmecpd"
from App Store/Google Play) and install it in their smartphone with operatingsystem in iOS (7.1 or above) or Android (3.0 or above).
