Happy summer, Katherine
See more information on next page . . .
The Unit Board did not meet this past month. However, we did have a Unit game. It was on Father’s Day and a big thank you to all who attended.
Also a big thank you to Marie Leonardini, our Hospitality Chair and to
all who brought food. It was delicious.
Unit Game Overall Winners: Ben and Betty Miller Ronnie McMurdie and Miriam Steinberg Katherine and Scott Ewing Ann McClelland and Carol Ross
There have been many questions about points lately. I’m putting together information to help clarify any confusion. We’ll look at the colors of the points, referred to as pigmentation. There are formulas used to calculate how any points will be awarded and take into account various factors, such as the class of the event, size of the field, number of sessions and the level of competition. Masterpoints are pigmented to reflect the level of competition.

WELCOME!
Your Unit 505 welcomes you to our Unit. We thank you for joining us and give you a chance to know us better.
It’s No Secret . . .
Communication is the key to a vibrant organization. Unit 505 seeks to “get the word out” to every member! Three main ways we connect are: KIBITZER Newsletter: You’ll see the board members and Beth Mora, the
KIBITZER editor’s contact information on the front page of each newsletter. Send information for the newsletter to the editor.
E-mail Announcements—used to announce Unit-wide events. UNIT WEBSITE: The unit’s website Contact Us feature can also be used to put
you in touch with the right person for your inquiry. www.playbridgesacramento.org
Here’s to keeping the conversation going!
HELP WANTED AD! Unit 505 needs a Partnership Chair to help with matching/getting/pairing/ players for Unit Games and Sectionals. This person does not need to be a Life Master. The only requirement is an interest in helping people, and you don't mind having your phone number and e-mail address included in flyers. Please contact Katherine Ewing or Maurie Studin to volunteer to help.

Congrats to US Women's Trials Team OSMO by Gary Hann
(article posted on the Bridge Winner’s Website)
Joanne Merry sent this article with her comment, “What a marvelous story for Women's Bridge!” To quote from the first USBF Women's Trials Daily Bulletin this week:
"Teri Smoot and Mary Ose are the founding partners of Team OSMO. Team OSMO was
established at the Providence NABC and is a group of women with a goal of competing (well) at the top levels of duplicate bridge. In order to achieve this, Teri and Mary (along with others) have been playing in many Regionals and NABC's (as well as some international tournaments)."
Major Kudos to Mary Ose, Terry Smoot, Ginny Curtis, Katherine Ewing, Joanne Merry and Prudence Saunders for deciding only to play against the best of
the best, in a quest to become a superb, winning team! Though they didn't succeed in this Women's Trials, they surely absorbed a giant dose of experience, and will likely be a force in Women's (and who knows, maybe Open) bridge sooner rather than later. In my book, that means this team is a big winner for bridge :)
IMHO, we definitely need more, and more visible, Women's bridge, and more of any gender/gender identity who prefer to sacrifice in the short term in pursuit of becoming elite players.
Mary Ose says, “The six of us (Team Osmo) played as a team in the USBF women's team trials. It was a fabulous experience playing against such a terrific field. I am a firm believer that that is how to grow one's game: by playing against the best. I would like to encourage more women to do the same. We didn't win this time but WE'LL BE BACK!!”
Editor’s Note: And we’ll be back to cheer you on!

Keen players are always eager to pit their skills against others, which is why the ACBL sanctions more than 1200 tournaments a year. If you want to play in a tournament, chances are good that you can find one just about any week of the year.
Sectional Tournaments are ACBL tournaments run by a unit or by a club to which authority for the activity has been granted by ACBL. Silver points are awarded in all events at a sectional. Most sectionals run for three days, although some are longer and a few run for only two days. Sectionals draw their competitors mostly from the immediate area.
Sectional Tournaments at Clubs (STaC) are ACBL tournaments with sectional rating staged at many clubs in a geographical area over a period of up to seven days. Events are played at several clubs, and results are transmitted to a central office manned by the director in charge. The director combines the results to determine the winners and overall places for partici-pants. Masterpoints awarded are silver.
Regional Tournaments are ACBL tournaments run by the districts and offer gold and red points. At least one regional tournament is held in each district annually.
North American Bridge Championships (NABC) are conducted by the ACBL and are held three times a year across the United States and Canada. NABCs offer platinum, gold and red points. (Information from ACBL.org)

When giving partner a ruff, if you have a choice of 3 or more cards to lead, lead lowest to indicate a preference for partner to return the lower ranking suit, high-est for the higher ranking suit, and a middle card to signal a trump or no prefer-ence. Here’s a good illustrative deal from a recent local club game.
The auction was as follows: East South West North 1H 2S 3H P 4H (all pass) South led the club 7, won by North, who returned a spade. South won and returned the deuce of spades, which North ruffed, East following with the jack. What should North do now? At the table, North returned a club. East won, drew trumps, then pitched a diamond on the king of spades, making 4. Who was to blame for allowing the game to make in your opinion, North or South? It seems obvious for North to cash a high diamond, but consider South’s lead of the deuce of spades. South had five spades of effectively equal rank to choose. Given that, South’s lead of the deuce practically demanded a club return. The implication was that South’s original lead was a singleton. 13
In this case, attempting to cash a high diamond would have been fatal to the defense.

On Friday, May 27th, George Lim and Marty Rogers had a 74.19 percent game! They play together almost every Friday. Both are very excellent players and will win, place or show most of the time. I don’t know that I have ever seen George with this big of a smile on his face. Be-sides playing on most Fridays, George will be seen picking up all of the table markers, boards and pencils after the game. He is very good about doing this for most of the directors. They are both wonderful people.
The Saturday lessons have started off with a really great group of 18 interesting future bridge players. Most of them have had a small amount of bridge experience, so they are keeping Joy on her toes. This is her first class to teach, but she says it is really enjoyable. Joy told Albert she might just give up cooking for teaching!
by Joy O’Dell
Two of our favorite players have other hobbies that they enjoy. Many of us do other things, but I doubt that many of you “Hike.” This is a picture taken on Friday, June 24th. Judy actually loves to hike and Ted says if he could not hike he would be totally devastated. Yes, he enjoys it more than bridge. He is known for taking anyone interested on a good hiking trip. He gauges the toughness according to those on the trail. As you can see in this picture, Judy is holding his hand to go down hill. I admire her tenacity. One of her other hobbies is playing golf. Ted also enjoys taking pictures and playing the piano. We have great news for the Sacramento Bridge Center. NO, we did not have a water pipe break or leak or anything else. We will be moving the end of July and the new center is starting to come together. I was going to take more pictures today, but the things that have been done do not really show up yet in a picture. The walls and ceilings are all in. The kitchen appliances have been delivered and the cupboards are almost ready to appear. I will wait until later next week to get some more pictures. You can always go to the Internet and check the new pictures that Ted puts up. He is usually ahead of me. We are getting there players, just hold on a little longer. Yes, we will be open on July 4th. Joy will have a great lunch and John will be directing. Come join us for a great time.

The recent California Capital Regional Tournament held at the Sacramento DoubleTree Hotel was well attended by our club members, and 49 of them were able to win some of those coveted pigmented MPs. In contrast, July is a slow month for the dedicated tournament player. However, the Unit 505 Swiss team game and annual meeting will be held on Sunday, July 17, 2016 at the Folsom Bridge Center. The pot luck will begin at 11:30 am. You can put a team together and compete there. For complete details and registration see flyer on page 3. Looking ahead, the Sutter Buttes Sectional will be held in Yuba City from August 5 - 7. Then in September, the Sacramento Sectional will be held in a new location, La Sierra Community Center 5325 Engle Road Carmichael, CA 95608 from Fri., Sept. 9 through Sun., Sept. 11. These tournaments offer our limited game players excellent opportunities to win some sil-ver Masterpoints. Additional information about these tournaments can be found on the ACBL website (www.acbl.org/tournaments/) and the flyers on pages 4 and 5 of this newsletter. Reminder: Bridge lessons are presented most Wednesdays promptly at 11:45 am, before the club’s regularly scheduled game. Check the home page of our club website for upcoming lesson titles.

“Perhaps a Better Way” by Joe Blackford
Many conventions have been introduced to duplicate bridge over the years and adopted into numerous Convention Cards. However, very few players are aware of the changes that have increased their effectiveness and productivity. Duplicate bridge is much more than an intellectual pastime, it is a game of percentages. Those achieving the higher percentages of course are the winners, so why not allow yourself a winning chance by including a few of these newer innovations into your bidding systems. That being said, Bridge Works, the home of “Bonanza Bridge”, will offer a series of lectures designated as, “Perhaps a Better Way”. The lectures will only suggest what Bridge Works feels is a more advantages use of each convention. Although these lectures may feature material not intended for use by many beginning players, it is our hopes at Bridge Works that exposure to players of any level will help bridge their gap between mediocrity and excellence. See the flyer on the next page for more information on the classes. Bridge Works would only hope that each player attend the supervised game following each lecture. These lectures will not be an attempt to change the game currently within your comfort zone, they will only serve as a suggestion that there is, “Perhaps a Better Way”. Please contact Joe Blackford at [email protected] if you have questions.
BEGINNING BRIDGE LESSONS
