Abingdon’s Treasures: St. Mary’s Episcopal Church (St. Mary’s is located at One Saint Mary’s Road, Abingdon, Maryland, 21009)

“St. Mary’s is the finest rural church in the diocese of Maryland”, This evaluation, made by Phoebe B. Stanton, Chairman

of the Department of Art History at the Johns Hopkins University, comes after a detailed examination of Gothic Revival

churches for her book, The Gothic Revival and American Church

Architecture.

Dr. William Francis Brand, the rector at St. Mary’s from 1849 to 1907, was

born in New Orleans June 17, 1814. He was educated at the University of

Virginia and received his theological training at the General Seminary in

New York City. He was ordained to the priesthood in the Episcopal Church

on 3 March 1844 and married Miss Sophia Hall of Harford County in 1845.

She was the great, great granddaughter of Colonel Thomas White (1704–

1779), the largest colonial landowner in Harford County. Among his land

properties was Constant Friendship.

Joshua Wilson, a Harford County doctor and farmer, graduated from the

University of Maryland Medical School in 1818. In 1823 he married and built Woodside, located on Singer Road. A civic

minded man, Wilson was willing to share his wealth as he prospered; he gave land for the construction of St. Mary’s

Episcopal Church between 1843 and 1846. His granddaughter, Miss Eloise H. Wilson died in 1997 and is buried at Saint

Mary’s Church.

The Diocese of Maryland gave permission in 1848 for the organization of an Episcopal Church at the current site.

Construction began in 1851.

Dr. Brand is largely responsible for the architecture of the church. Under his direction Frank Wills’ plans were chosen for

the building. He purchased the Butterfield windows. St. Mary’s is the only church in America to have a complete set of

fifteen stained glass windows designed by William Butterfield, the English Gothic Revival architect. The windows depict

the life of Christ and greatly enhance the church. They are the only known set by Butterfield in the United States.
