The Sustainable Innovation Forum

brings together climate leaders from across the globe in the public and private sectors, NGOs and academia. I enjoy participating because I get to share California’s successes and challenges, while also hearing about other innovative programs... The panels are always informative and it is inspiring to be around so many other climate leaders.”Bob Wieckowski, California State Senator

Spearheading climate action through collaborationThe Sustainable Innovation Forum 2019 was once again a key platform at COP in bringing together business, government, finance and NGOs to progress the transition to a zero-carbon economy. Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the event welcomed over 600 delegates, 82 speakers, and 54 sponsors and partners on the 10-11 December in Madrid, Spain.

Whilst the UNFCCC COP25 negotiations felt the effects of weeks of uncertainty and were widely regarded as disappointing, the Sustainable Innovation Forum 2019 showcased the wave of momentum and the continued growth in ambition and action from non state actors - including businesses, investors, cities and regions.

Spearheading climate action through collaboration was a key focus of the 2-day Forum. This was echoed in the opening address by Frank Bainimarama, Prime Minister of Fiji, who called for “a rapid and fundamental shift in our economy” and the need to create and grow relationships to enable us to limit warming to 1.5 degrees.

Day One continued with dynamic discussions on mobility, the energy transition, circular economy, climate finance, and the governance of natural capital, with insights from both industry and government leaders including environment Ministers from Singapore, The Netherlands and Costa Rica as well as the Executive Director of Green Climate Fund and World Recourse Institute’s Chief Executive Officer.

The 10th Anniversary Dinner was hosted by Siemens in the evening of day one bringing together 104 climate leaders. With Keynotes from Naoko Ishii and COP26 President, the Rt Hon Claire Perry O’Neill from the UK Government, the conversation turned to the importance of 2020 as a pivot year for taking action and the role of Glasgow in shaping our future.

Day Two shifted focus towards innovation and technology, opening with a high-level discussion between Mary Robinson, Chair of The Elders and former President of Ireland, and Ricardo Lagos, former President of Chile, followed by insights into the transition of agriculture and heavy industry. The interactive Roundtable Solution Sessions and engaging Start-Up Lightning Pitches delivered solutions-based outcomes to conclude an exciting and constructive Forum.

Climate Action would like to thank all sponsors, partners, speakers and delegates that joined us at the 10th annual Sustainable Innovation Forum 2019. We hope the ambition and action demonstrated by the Forum’s participants will spearhead a year of exponential growth in ambition and action by governments.

Conference Day Two: Theme Highlights

Former Presidents, Mary Robinson (Ireland) and Ricardo Lagos (Chile) opened Day Two with an intense debate on climate responsibility and the role of the public and private sectors working together. This was quickly followed with insights on the difficulties facing industry transition from the Director General of UN FAO, the Deputy Prime Minister of Sweden and EIT Climate-KIC’s CEO, Kirsten Dunlop. The morning panel on decarbonising heavy transport covered innovations of substitution such as biofuels and electrification with perspectives from Indonesia, California, and Egypt.

“Climate action should be inclusive in every economic sector”Qu Dongyu, Director-General, United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization

Representatives from the UK, Iceland, and the Basque Country discussed reimagining urban built environments. Speakers covered issues of urban mobility, the sustainability of mobile data, and how to rethink system change as an integral part of innovative thinking. More and more people are living in cities; we must explore the myriad of possibilities before us, a new kind of smart and green city built for efficiency and for people.

“A leader isn’t one that gets their own city down to zero emissions; a leader is the one that leads other cities to get down to zero as well”Dennis Pamlin, Senior Advisor, Mission Innovation’s Net-Zero Compatible Innovations Initiative

This session explored the energy transition in two parts. Initially, business opportunities within the Basque Country were discussed taking into account varying sizes of renewable energy companies. The second panel specifically addressed opportunities for industrial development within the context of sustainable mobility.

A new industrial model in Europe generates value in a responsible way for society, the environment and the economy. The Basque industry, for its part, will show its commitment to this new sustainable model to lead the energy transition through renewable energies, smart grids and digital transformation applied to these sectors.

Roundtable Discussions Key Outcomes

Circularity in CitiesParticipants decided on 3 core ‘solution’ themes as the underlying drivers for transitioning to a regenerative circular economy: the central role of the ‘global human’ in the design of the circular economy; the dematerialisation of cities and societies; and the application of a systemic perspective.

Sustainable Urban Mobility: Stronger Actions for a Crucial DecadeThe group discussed what actions were feasible for transformative change within urban transport to follow a sustainable low-carbon path, and how public and private sectors need to interact (or work independently) in order to make this a reality.

Financing Sustainable MobilityParticipants explored the role of the private sector on the development of sustainable mobility ecosystems, and the challenges and early management of environmental and social impacts associated with the transition to sustainable mobility.

De-risking your Supply ChainsDiscussion followed three main areas for supply chains: assessing and measuring climate risk; approaches used to build resilience, and challenges faced by companies implementing climate risk and resilience strategies.

Sustainable Leadership and Collaboration in the ICT SectorThis session explored leadership by the ICT sector and the roles of key stakeholder groups in collaboration with the industry to work towards the SDGs and climate protection. The session discussed what role digital technologies play in supporting climate protection and SDGs. One of the main outcomes was identifying the public-private partnership that drive the deployment of technology and support climate challenges.

Building Circularity: Rent Your Façade!Alongside talks on the origins and quality of building materials in a circular system, discussion centred on the concept of “building systems and products as a service”, and the research and innovation needed to make this concept a strong business model.

Innovative Financing for Nature-Based SolutionsThe introduction of innovative approaches to catalyse private sector investment will be crucial to scale up solutions, which were identified by participants across three themes: finance, policy, and carbon markets.

Influencing Your Carbon FootprintsThe group discussed the wealth of data and studies that currently exist, and the issues that come with them, including lack of standardisation and whether their data can be trusted. Participants also discussed individuals’ carbon footprints, consumer education, and offsetting.

Climate Finance SolutionsDiscussion centred around the difficulties of getting projects funded, and touched on the importance of data models in financing projects, the need to matchmake with the right stakeholders, and how re-evaluating projects can lead to success.

Event Gallery and Testimonials

It was very informative and excellently organised. Thanks for the opportunity to

interact with key players and being home some terrific opportunities for collaboration.”Prof Daniella Tilbury, Commissioner for Sustainable Development, HM Government of Gibraltar

The Forum offered a remarkable opportunity for spreading the word of our work and its

many benefits. It allowed us to be placed adjacent to an environment hosting a truly esteemed and diverse group of delegates. It was an experience we were privileged to take part in.”Novella Landau, Founder, Ambient Green

The SIF2019 has been an effective forum to bring public, private and third sector

organisation to work together to tackle our existential issues. In the roundtable discussions we were able to bring together the many different perspectives from many diverse actors as large petroleum companies, green building councils, academia, town halls, experts or consultants, finding that surprisingly we came up with a very coherent and symphonic approach to tackling common social and economic challenges and offer solutions needed for the transition to a circular economy and tackle the climate emergency. It was great fun and powerful to co-create and apply collective-intelligence in this way.”Sharam Yalda, Executive Partner, European Innovation Programmes, Soros Gabinete, Socio Ejecutivo

We talk so much about engaging the private sector in tackling climate change. I found the

Forum to be such an ideal and convenient platform to interact directly with companies’ CEOs to learn from each other and discuss opportunities for collaboration for concrete action on the ground”Zitouni Ould-Dada, Deputy Director, Climate and Environment Division, CBC, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)

The roundtable was lively and generated an exciting debate, I wish we had the opportunity

to continue for longer. Judging the start-up contest was also a pleasant break, the quality of all ideas was really high and I’m confident that some of them will end up becoming successful game-changing businesses – should keep an eye on them!” Federico Mazza, Senior Analyst, Climate Finance, Climate Policy Initiative
