Happy New Year and welcome to another summer edition of Truck Power.

2014 was a big year on a number of fronts for Isuzu Australia.

According to official T-Mark industry reports, Isuzu finished 2014 with a total of 7,150 truck sales and over 23 per cent market share, more than 10 per cent clear of its closest rival!

As well as taking out overall sales honours, Isuzu continues to dominate the light duty market with a total of 3,279 units for a 37.5 per cent share, while also comfortably leading the medium market with 2,755 units for a solid 41.7 per cent market share.

In the heavy market, Isuzu finished the year well achieving a 10.4 per cent share, with the FY Series 8x4 proving highly popular on the sales charts.

As 2015 commences, we are again market leaders for the 26th consecutive year!

May we take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support of the Isuzu brand over the years.

In the following pages you will find more of the latest Isuzu Australia news, plus some Isuzu insights from around the world.

With all the excitement that filled 2014, far and away the biggest news was the release of Isuzu’s latest product offering, Isuzu Telematics.

Following its launch in April 2014 at the ‘Melbourne International Truck, Trailer and Equipment Show’, the Isuzu Telematics system has been positively received by the broader transport industry.

In this edition we take a look at how it performed during a recent testing session with the truck media in Victoria.

We also delve into some thought-provoking ‘application’ feature stories, including an Isuzu fleet that services the citizens of Dubbo in rural NSW, and a plumbing outfit with some access issues in Melbourne’s west.

Fellow ‘towies’ will appreciate the special feature covering some of their counterparts in far-north Queensland.

And in ‘IAL World’ we look at the new Isuzu Madill dealership (QLD), as the business relocates to larger and more modern premises in a bid to better serve their growing customer base.

On behalf of the team at Isuzu, we trust you and your family enjoyed a safe and relaxing festive season, and that 2015 is a great year for all of you.

Again, thanks for your support and we hope you enjoy this issue of Truck Power magazine.

ISUZU LOOKS TO ASIA

Growing populations and ageing infrastructure in Asia present a huge business opportunity and Isuzu Japan is right at the forefront in its goal to become a true global player.

As many Truck Power readers will know, the Australian truck market is highly competitive with 22 truck manufacturers all vying for sales.

The quality and range of product from all manufacturers provides Australian truck customers with a wealth of options, while technological and regulatory advances in recent years has resulted in somewhat of a levelling of the playing field when comparing specification and performance characteristics.

The situation is similar in advanced economies around the world, not just for automotive products but products in general.

In the Australian context, and in the face of this intense competition, Isuzu Australia Limited (IAL) managed to sell an impressive total of 7,150 new trucks in 2014 to take a 23 per cent share of the market - over 10 per cent clear of its closest rival.

These are of course positive outcomes for IAL and subsequently, for its customers too, but never keen to sit on their hands, Isuzu is always looking outside the box.

Whilst IAL has built and maintained its positon as the Australian truck market leader for the past

26 years, it is also of critical importance that it continues to develop innovative methods of ‘setting itself apart’ from its competitors, while continuing to provide additional value to its customers.

After-sales activity has been a key area in which IAL has invested over many years through the development of a market leading raft of high quality after-sales products and services, such as the newly released Isuzu Telematics ‘Connect’ and ‘Connect Plus’ products, and its renowned customer care program, ‘Isuzu Care’.

On the Japanese domestic front, Isuzu Motors Limited (Isuzu Motors) is in a somewhat similar position to Australia, as it seeks additional opportunities in an advanced market.

Australia and Japan are in marked contrast to those developing markets elsewhere in the Asian regions where it is the sheer growth in demand for vehicles that presently drives truck markets.

With the Isuzu Motors head-office presently surrounded by expanding Asian populations, and emerging power economies, there are incredible opportunities for the company in manufacturing and sales.

The Australian truck market has reached a level of maturity with no less

than 22 brands now offering products.

NEWS

It is little wonder then that Isuzu Motors finished the previous financial year (ending March 2014) with a very strong result.

Worldwide, Isuzu Motors sold almost 640,000 units, with a net sales result of 1.76 trillion Japanese Yen. In Australian dollars, this equates to a healthy $18.1 billion dollars.

Over the current financial year, the company has implemented yet another aggressive plan - with a projected sales volume of 680,000 units - up 6.3 percent on the last financial year.

Underpinning its international operations, Isuzu Motors has an ambitious goal – that of being a ‘true global player’.

To assist in the achievement of this goal, business investment in both manufacturing and engineering development will be increased significantly.

In places like Thailand, China, India and Indonesia, the company is already investing heavily in manufacturing facilities, with a special focus on Thailand.

Several factors are driving this new momentum in these countries.

Chief amongst them is the ‘ballooning’ of populations in many regional countries which continues unabated and which weighs heavily on ageing infrastructure - especially on road and rail networks.

Based on historical growth rates, the UN has predicted that between 2000 and 2050 Asia’s total population will increase from 3.48 to 5.00 billion – a growth of 44 per cent.

Countries impacted will include Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Laos, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, the Philippines and Vietnam.

Much of this population growth will occur in countries that are the least capable of coping with additional stress on natural resources and existing infrastructure.

Infrastructure improvements - often complete re-builds - are already urgently needed. It is at this intersection that opportunities arise for astute organisations, such as Isuzu Motors.

Success in established markets such as Europe, America and our own domestic market relies upon a sophisticated sales approach, a high standard of

technical specifications, and comprehensive after-sales support.

Isuzu Motor’s ability to adapt quickly has seen it emerge as one the world’s most efficient automotive producers, surviving the GFC and continuing to thrive.

It is a dynamic period for the company, which is developing aggressive plans to secure its global competitiveness.

On the home front, ultimately the Australian truck buyer is the winner, as the volume opportunities afforded to Isuzu Motors through its participation in emerging Asian markets will create a stronger parent company.

The expanding opportunities and outcomes from the intensive product research and development program underway also present an exciting proposition for Australian Isuzu truck customers, placing Isuzu Australia in an enviable position.

SPOTLIGHT ON ISUZU’S OFF-ROAD RANGE

From all the top manufacturers, right down to the new players in the market, 4x4 SUVs, utilities and wagons are at near saturation point on our metro and regional roads.

When duty inevitably calls for a larger 4x4 payload however, commercial options seem to dry up pretty quickly indeed.

Isuzu Australia Limited (IAL) has worked hard to plug that gap, offering a quality 4x4 commercial range, geared to work seamlessly within Australia’s cruel and often unforgiving driving environment.

Based around the proven N and F series, the full range of Isuzu off-road trucks offers a solution for almost every application, starting with the light duty NLS 200 AWD, right through to the rugged FTS 800 4x4 Crew Cab.

And IAL’s recently released ‘Application Report’ publication takes an in-depth look at some of these applications, direct from the coalface.

The report examines working Isuzu 4x4 applications in some of Australia’s largest sectors, including emergency services, mining and exploration, local government and remote service delivery.

Covering everything from a mobile breast cancer screening set-up operating across the Top End, through to the highly specialised needs of the Country Fire Authority in South Australia, the IAL Off-Road Series Application Report is essential reading for all those in the 4x4 market.

Customers would be all too aware of the almost infinite options they face when looking for a lighter 4x4 commercial work vehicle these days.

BANG FOR BUCKWITH ALL NEW FVZFor the majority of on-road applications the maximum GVM allowable for three axle vehicles not certified as road friendly is 23,000kg, however 26,000kg GVM is allowable under certain permit conditions, and on private land.

The engineering team at Isuzu Australia has achieved ADR approval to increase the capacity of the rear axle in the FVZ 1400 to 20,000kg, while the capacity of the front axle remains the same at 6,600kg.

The increase in rear axle capacity will cater for those special permit and private land applications, but is only available on FVZ 1400 fitted with the Isuzu 6-rod rear suspension.

IAL recently announced that all new FVZ 1400 models now have their GVM uprated from 24,000kg to 26,000kg.

ISUZU SWEEPS AHEAD WITH NEW DUAL CONTROLFollowing extensive customer feedback, Isuzu has added to its impressive model range with a dual control FSR 700/850 Auto - ideal for street sweeper applications. The feedback demanded the reliability and support of a factory-backed product, without the hassle and extra expense of aftermarket conversions.

Based on the popular FSR Auto, the design was achieved with next-to-no intervention to the cab chassis.

The factory dual control set-up has been achieved without the need to drill holes or cut openings in the cab sheet metal, maintaining cab integrity and resulting in a neat finish.

The breakout component of the dual control models is the cross-shaft mechanism marrying the two steering columns.

Sourced from Germany, the cross shaft component has been specifically designed and built for Isuzu to be installed without affecting standard steering hydraulic functions.

The truck’s existing cab electrical harness is retained, providing reliable synchronised operation of functions, such as fuel gauges and odometer readings from the dual factory instrument clusters along with full air-conditioning functions.

The dual control option is currently available on the FSR 700/850 Auto, and IAL is evaluating additional models that will be suitable for the application of this dual control technology.

INVENTING THE FUTURE WITH ISUZU TELEMATICS

Isuzu’s Managing Director and CEO, Mike Yoda goes over the test fleet with the IAL Engineering team in Geelong.

Telematics provides a real-time flow of information between vehicles, drivers, transport operations and the broader road network.

At its core and very simply, telematics technology enables informed decision-making.

Armed with the data telematics unearths, there’s no question that vehicle, personnel and equipment productivity efficiency will be drastically enhanced.

By integrating sensor technology, satellite GPS, management software and, shortly, smartphones, telematics allows transport operations to view ‘real-time’ data flow information on both driver and vehicle activity from anywhere, via the web.

This level of interconnectivity assists with faster turnaround times as well as services such as automated maintenance scheduling, surpassing anything that we might have taken for ‘standard’ in the past.

But again, it’s the decision making of fleet managers in particular - where the real gains are to be made.

The data harnessed through telematics makes for accurate and reliable operational reporting when it comes to individual vehicles, instilling confidence in the overall supervision of fleets.

Isuzu Australia Limited Chief Engineer, Product Strategy, Mr Simon Humphries, said the release of Isuzu’s telematics packages, Connect and Connect Plus, was an exciting development.

“Isuzu telematics is able to provide a new level of insight into transport operations and management.

“Operators have the unique ability to harness a wide range of information and data to maximise opportunities for efficiency and productivity,” he said.

“Road transport has traditionally been a hot-spot of innovation and as we can see in both the truck and car sectors, there are some savvy operators in the market.

“The way Isuzu views these advancements in technology is to make them work for the end user and work smarter, not harder.”

Isuzu Australia Limited (IAL) is leading the way in Australian telematics, providing two products available for both older and newer truck models, with Isuzu Connect, and Isuzu Connect Plus.

“Immediate operational intelligence is becoming increasingly important across the transport industry. We live in an age now where we demand instant information.” Mr Humphries said.

ISUZU CONNECT AND ISUZU CONNECT PLUSWith Isuzu Connect and Isuzu Connect Plus data is king.

There’s a constant stream of it radiating from each individual vehicle, outlining everything from driver behaviour to measurements that help increase productivity and control over variables like fuel use.

As a starting point, the Isuzu ‘Connect’ platform provides an additional layer of support for individual drivers in areas of health and safety.

When harnessed correctly, Isuzu telematics will deliver genuine efficiencies and new levels of productivity to Australian transport and fleet operations.

Mapping waypoints.

Telematics vehicle reports.

The GPS positioning feature helps to remove the ‘Lone Ranger’ experience for drivers, or the sense of isolation that is often experienced by long distance drivers. This feature alone can significantly reduce driver stress levels.

There is also a theft alert and a ‘geo-fencing’ feature which helps prioritise routes depending on time of day, traffic hazards and other road user considerations.

Further to that, Isuzu Connect’s driver observation component also looks at speed and acceleration, prompting a safer driving approach.

To aid in efficiency and productivity, Connect also includes features such as automated service reminders, mileage monitoring and route adherence.

Connect Plus has been designed for Isuzu models equipped with a controller area network or CAN, and provides in-depth monitoring and management of engine and truck mechanical efficiency. It also includes important driver safety features, such as panic button, collision alert, cab tilt sensor and door-open monitor.

Additional positive driver behaviour promotion is possible with Isuzu Connect Plus with data recorded from a range of inputs such as harsh braking, over revving, clutch activation, idle time and so on.

WHAT DOES ISUZU TELEMATICS MEAN FOR DRIVERS?Drivers simply start their vehicle and go about their daily routine. There’s no interference to the operation of a vehicle at all.

Off the road, drivers can also receive objective feedback on their own driving style - details such

as acceleration, braking habits, speed, route-adherence and downtime.

Isuzu telematics has the ability to read the decision making of an individual driver whilst comparing key variants such as travel time and fuel consumption.

This information can be harnessed to promote even safer and more efficient driving, and with objective reporting, can be used to incentivise performance improvements and other efficiency gains.

Currently in development is a ‘Driver ID’ system (through a unique 4-digit pin) and a convenient two-way messaging system for driver-to-base communication.

An Electronic Work Diary (EWD) is also under development which will monitor and record the work and rest times of a driver. It’s expected EWDs will assist in the advancement of the commercial application of telematics more broadly and achieve further safety, compliance, enforcement and safety objectives.

VEHICLE TO INFRASTRUCTUREIn the not too distant future, by linking in with cutting-edge communication systems for public infrastructure, drivers and fleet operators may be alerted to local road conditions and optimal alternate routes. This will have a major impact upon travel times, efficient vehicle and resource use, and driver safety for remote and city areas, alike.

Telematics also plays a critical role assisting intelligent transport systems (ITS) empowering users to be better informed and make safe, more coordinated use of transport systems.

Throughout the world, telematics technology is being increasingly relied upon to help reduce

congestion on roads and work in to improve the performance of all modes of transport.

Incidentally, Australia’s second largest city, Melbourne, will play host to the 23rd World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems in October 2016.

On the compliance front, a new framework governing in-vehicle telematics has recently been released to provide the trucking industry with guaranteed protections to operators’ privacy when using telematics devices.

FYJ Agitator took part in the testing.

The framework was developed by the National Transport Commission in response to concerns from trucking operators and drivers about how enforcement agencies would use data collected from telematics.

VEHICLE TO DISPATCHERIsuzu ‘Connect’ also has fleet productivity and truck efficiency well covered. ‘Fleet productivity’ includes service reminders, automated reports and truck use. ‘Truck efficiency’ data includes arrival notification, mileage monitoring and route adherence.

VEHICLE TO SERVICE MANAGERSAs part of an integrated network, it is equally important that service managers have access to vehicle data to ensure they make the best, most efficient, decisions possible. The manager

receives the real-time data from each truck, assisting him or her in evaluating overall performance and identifying any issues.

All real-time data and reports are accessed via the internet and data is stored in secure web servers.

VEHICLE TO FLEET MANAGEREven the finance department of the relevant transport organisation has the ability to be within the Isuzu Telematics data loop. As an example, fleet managers could receive the entire fleet’s day-to-day running information, which could in turn be connected to the finance department.

This potential link-up results in a simple reconciliation of running costs. It also supports general fleet efficiency, along with superior maintenance and service scheduling.

Another benefit of Isuzu Telematics is the practical input into management follow-ups, such as driver and staff training, and even incentive programs for improvement.

Mr Humphries said, “When working in unison all these features add up, assisting transport companies to gain significant benefits through enhanced driver safety practices and greater efficiency, as well as benefits for the environment.”

TELEMATICS AND BEYONDThe growth of telematics across the automotive industry shows no signs of slowing down.

Manufacturers are taking notice of what their customers want, and that’s a demand for more technologically advanced, ‘smarter’ vehicles. In fact it’s a key factor driving sales in both the car and truck markets alike.

A driverless vehicle has already been demonstrated at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, and driverless public transport pods are about to go on trial in Milton Keynes in the UK.

Needless to say, the development of telematics is set to continue unabated, and it is likely to be used in ways that are unimaginable now – making the future very exciting indeed according to Isuzu’s Simon Humphries.

“We are all extremely excited about what lies ahead for Isuzu Telematics”, he said.

“Isuzu Telematics represents yet another enormous evolution for Isuzu trucks.”

TELEMATICS TRIED AND TESTED

The intensive, day-long testing program provided attendees with a hands-on opportunity to truly engage with the system whilst showcasing the many safety benefits and applications of Isuzu Telematics.

And the feedback on this new era in intelligent transport was overwhelmingly positive, with the Isuzu Telematics package getting a big tick.

Trucksales.com.au Editor Rod Chapman was as impressed with Isuzu telematics as he was with the model range itself, describing the system as an:

“…incredible technological innovation operating in the background.”

“If you want proof of why Isuzu has been Australia’s top-selling truck brand since 1989 you need only take any of its models for a run. Potent and eminently practical, their functionality is complemented perfectly by their comfort and convenience, with a range of safety features completing the picture.”

Telematics was also considered a huge benefit to Isuzu fleets according to David Meredith of The West Australian, who described the system during testing as providing:

“Every opportunity to get all the data you need to help your drivers and help your operation run more efficiently.”

With over 20 years of reporting on the transport sector, Prime Mover Editor Peter Armstrong is widely considered one of Australia’s leading transport journalists. He’s described Isuzu Telematics as:

“…another example of the innovation in which Isuzu leads the competitive field by a long way.”

“This information can be used to encourage better driver behaviour and safer on-road operation.”

Tim Giles writing for Diesel magazine liked the ability for Isuzu telematics packages to be retro-fitted to older trucks, bringing fleets up to date and connected.

“The new initiative by Isuzu should have the effect of making it easier for fleets with a diversity of vehicle brands to find a single solution to their telematics needs.”

ISUZU F SERIES DELIVERS ON PERFORMANCE AND RELIABILITY FOR QLD TOWIES

FEATURE F or long haul trips to remote destinations, the F series offers drivers creature comforts rivalling those of home. Top of the list is the renowned Isri driver seat - with air suspension, lumbar support and integrated seatbelt - significantly

reducing the physical impact on drivers regularly tackling long stretches of rough, corrugated roads…

Add to that, precise, low effort driving controls, integrated air conditioning and a state-of-the-art Digital Audio Visual Equipment (DAVE) system, and the edge is taken off the challenging conditions commonly experienced in a day’s work.

We met with two successful Queensland towing companies. Both rely on the Isuzu F Series to get their customer’s cargo where it needs to go, regardless of what the roads might throw their way. NQ Towing’s Richard Teeling relied on word of

mouth when researching what truck to buy.

TRUCKPOWER

SUMM

ER 2015

14

NQ TOWING SERVICESNewcomer to the trucking industry, Richard Teeling took NQ Towing Service under his wing in 2013, inheriting the company’s solid reputation for customer service and a fleet of trucks that included two Isuzu Gigas.

With a team of nine drivers, one mechanic, and phone calls steadily coming in from new customers, the decision was made the following year to add two new trucks to his sizeable fleet. After extensive research, Mr Teeling settled on the Isuzu FRR 600 as the model of choice.

“I’d never had anything to do with towing before taking over the company, so I had to learn by talking to truck drivers and dealers in the area. I rang around a few companies that were using different tow trucks and Isuzu trucks were the only ones I heard no bad reports about,” Mr Teeling said.

“In terms of reliability, cab comfort and fuel economy, Isuzu trucks stood out from everything else on the market.”

Based in Cairns, NQ Towing Service has been servicing the north since 1988, and specialises in moving and relocating machinery, access equipment, generators, site sheds, and containers to mining and construction sites.

Mr Teeling’s brand new FRR 600s – both fitted with accessory packs – were purchased from Ireland Isuzu in Cairns, who arranged the fitting of the trays and installation of the custom lighting with South East Queensland Tilt Trays.

A regular day on the job for the FRRs will see them loaded up to maximum capacity and travelling 8 to 10 hours a day to greater Cairns region destinations and others in further flung areas.

The roads can be challenging and their condition unpredictable, so driving a truck that is reliable, safe and comfortable is paramount to keeping drivers happy and meeting customer timeframes.

“We have to send the trucks up bush and the roads can be quite tragic; you won’t know what you’re

getting until you’re up there,” Mr Teeling said.

“If you’re doing bush driving you’ve got to be vigilant as you’ll come across kangaroos and cows. You’ve got to watch out for them. That kind of driving can take it out of you.

“It doesn’t hurt that the Isuzus are ridiculously comfortable – they’re almost too comfortable for the drivers! We’ve also found them really quiet, and the hill brake assist is really useful as well.”

As the trucks cover many kilometres each year, another drawcard for Mr Teeling is Isuzu’s reputation for being a quality vehicle that lasts the distance with little to worry about on the mechanical front.

“It’s after your warranty expires and the kilometres get up there that you really start to see the quality of a vehicle come into play, and that’s where I’d heard good reports on the Isuzu trucks,” Mr Teeling said.

The accessibility and affordability of parts and accessories is another reason Isuzu trucks were top of the list come purchase time.

“The main focus of our business is good service – we don’t rely on towing customer breakdowns for our trade. Our business comes from delivering equipment and other goods our customers need, when they need it. The reliability of the trucks” Mr Teeling said.

“If a truck breaks down and I can’t get the parts then we might have a truck out of commission for up to a week; that’s where having trucks like the Isuzu is ideal, because the parts are easy to source, and the trucks easy to service.”

The two FRR trucks have already earned their celebrity stripes, carrying some high profile cargo at a specialty event in Townsville.

“One of the first outings for the new Isuzu trucks was the V8 Supercars event in Townsville. They were running around everywhere and even carried Aussie motorsport legend, Craig Lowndes’ car around – not a bad way to advertise the business and the trucks at the same time!” Mr Teeling said.

Alfie’s Towing is a trusted local business operating in Edmonton (10 kilometres south of Cairns), largely servicing customers in the far north region.

Company namesake and owner/driver Mr di Salvo, is a down-to-earth Queenslander who purchased his first Isuzu truck – an NQR 450 – in 2006, and he hasn’t looked back since.

“I was a used car dealer back then, and I bought a 450 to run around some tractors I was selling. Once I had the truck, towing work seemed to come my way and people were ringing me with towing jobs,” Mr di Salvo said.

“Things grew from there, and I bought more Isuzu trucks, hired drivers and it’s now a full-time business with three drivers and two office staff. Consequently I’m no longer selling cars – I’m moving them!”

The newest addition to Alfie’s Isuzu line-up is the FSD 700 Long, fitted with a 4-car carrier tray, trailer and winch.

“I bought the FSD 700 from Ireland Isuzu in Cairns and they were really helpful with meeting all of my needs. From there I organised the trailer, tray and winch to be fitted in Brisbane, it took about five weeks to get the truck ‘back on the horse’ and then she was ready to go,” Mr di Salvo said.

Already happy with the performance of his FRR 525, and two FRR 600s, opting for another Isuzu in the F series seemed the right fit when the need for a new truck arose.

“I took a liking to the Isuzu trucks because they were the cheapest vehicle to run and the most reliable. Now I’ve got a decent fleet of Isuzu trucks, it’s even easier as the parts are interchangeable and the trucks easy to service.

“The new 700 will go wherever it’s needed – mainly through the Queensland top end. I wanted this model because it’s bigger, and it’s got the air suspension in the back which means driver comfort is excellent on the long trips. It’s a great all-round truck,” he said.

Mr di Salvo’s Isuzu trucks don’t spend much time back at his headquarters; instead they’ve clocked up some serious kilometres during their time on the job.

“It’s a case of ‘have wheels, will travel’ for these trucks. My 450’s now done over 500,000 kilometres and my other three other trucks, all F Series, have done between 150,000 -350,000 kilometres,” Mr di Salvo said.

While some people might struggle with long hours out on challenging remote roads, for Mr di Salvo it’s one of his favourite parts of the job.

“I don’t mind travelling the long distances, I actually love it. Some of the places you go, you’re virtually in the middle of nowhere, with no phone reception. That’s why having an Isuzu means I’ve got that peace of mind of knowing I’m driving a reliable truck that’s not going to break down on me out there.

“I’ll be buying another tilt tray next year and it’ll most likely be an Isuzu. I’ve been using Isuzu trucks for almost a decade now, and I can’t imagine changing my mind anytime soon.”

ACCESS ALL AREAS WITH ISUZUMelbourne based outfit, Helms Plumbing, found the Isuzu FYX to be the perfect solution to some persistent access and floating woes.

Any tradesman, especially plumbers and excavators, will tell you the very first thing they consider when arriving at a new job is the pesky issue of access.

Every site has its own unique challenges, but when you’re floating 16-odd tonnes of excavation equipment, gaining that all important access to the right location can be a recurring nightmare.

Operating out of Campbellfield on Melbourne’s northern fringe, Helms Plumbing Services is no stranger to access pains, especially on some of its more complex metro jobs.

Providing domestic and commercial plumbing, drainage and roofing services across Victoria, Helms use seven excavators (several weighing in at 16 tonnes), which were traditionally floated by cumbersome semitrailers.

Although, with access constantly an issue in the tighter, inner-city and suburban sites, Director Helmi Adams eventually decided the solution was an Isuzu FYX 2500 - with a heavy duty beavertail tray and third wheel axle – and all for very good reason.

“The truck is used daily to transport our excavators and other heavy equipment that can`t be floated with our other beavertail trucks,” Mr Adams said.

“The Isuzu FYX has that additional rear axle which enables us to transport extra-heavy equipment in a flat tray truck to and from locations where access is limited, and where semis are not able to enter.

“It has a 6 metre, heavy duty beavertail body with hydraulic ramps, custom tool boxes and storage cages. We also installed safety lighting and aluminum wheels.”

Helms Plumbing Services started operation in 2006, with only two employees and a mini excavator.

In only eight years it has grown substantially,

employing a total of 33 staff operating seven excavators, two tipper trucks and four beavertail flat tray civil and drainage works trucks.

Renowned for their quality of work, Helms are now an accredited civil contractor with service providers, Yarra Valley Water, City West Water, as well as Melbourne Water.

“We service registered builders, developers, engineering consultants, water authorities and the general public,” Mr Adams said.

“We stand out as we offer prompt service and use our own resources, not sub-contractors. We therefore don’t have to wait for subcontractors to be available before a job can commence. We also specialise in complex and deep drainage works.

“Quality and efficiency are what we strive for on every job.”

The success of the business hasn’t come by mistake either.

From the outset, Helmi was conscious that any operation was only as good as its last job, and that quality people and equipment brought with it quality outcomes for his clients.

From the excavation equipment through to the trucks delivering them, Helms Plumbing has been willing to invest in top flight equipment and value for money.

“The selection was based on Isuzu`s reputation and sales history. Value for money, extra weight capacity and after-sales service all played a significant part in going with Isuzu again,” he said.

“The first truck we purchased was an Isuzu FTR 900, which has a beavertail body. It has been part of our fleet since 2007 and is used on daily basis.

“The new FYX 2500 has a 350 horsepower turbo diesel engine which offers more than enough

torque and power to carry our heaviest loads.”

Inside the cabin, drivers are looked after too, with driver’s airbag and an Isri 6860 air suspension driver’s seat with lumbar support, height, rake and auto weight adjustment.

There’s also an ADR 42 compliant sleeper with mattress, electric windows and central locking - delivering a comfortable car-like feel.

The FXY 2500 also comes standard with Isuzu’s digital radio via the Digital Audio Visual System Equipment (DAVE), which has become a much-loved feature for the Helms team.

This is due to its safety features including reversing cameras and a GPS unit that allows you to put in the height of the vehicle so that the safest route to the job site is navigated.

“The other feature for the guys is the cabin comfort,” Helmi said.

“Although, having the flexibility of being able to transport all of our equipment, regardless of weight and size, is probably top of the list.”

It’s all part of the reason Helms keep coming back to Isuzu for their growing fleet needs as the business blooms.

“We’ve had a great run over the years with Isuzu. We always get a competitive deal, the after-sales service is great, the product is reliable and we get good service at Westar Trucks Derrimut.”

Of course, the new FYX 2500 adds to that long list of advantages, in terms of greater access and flexibility on the work site, something that eluded Helms Plumbing for some time.

And it’s no surprise really. After all, the Isuzu F Series is widely regarded as Australia’s best range of medium/heavy duty trucks.

NEW ISUZU MADILL SITE MEETS DEMAND

LOCAL ISUZU TECHS AMONGST WORLD’S BEST

After much planning and four months’ work, the Madill Motor Group has completed its move to 100 Sandalwood Lane, Forest Glen, on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

The new location, just metres off the Bruce Highway, features a huge footprint for its trucks, along with a refurbished office and newly built parts site.

The move will enhance the reputation of the trusted Madill Motor Group, which has been a familiar name in the south-east Queensland region since 1935.

The company spans across three generations of the Madill family.

General Manager of the Madill Motor Group, Stephen Thorn, said it has been pleasing to watch the project come together.

“The new home for Madill Isuzu is very exciting in many ways,” Mr Thorn said.

“Firstly, because our valued customers from the building trade, including Des Biggs (architect) and Chris Smith (builder), helped complete the rebuild in record time.

“Secondly, our loyal Isuzu customers are ensured many years of back-up service for their trucks.

“Finally, it guarantees a great future for all our sales parts and service team, especially our Isuzu factory trained apprentice mechanics.”

“This move means customers will get easier access to our modern facilities, as well as our renowned professional service,” Mr Thorn said.

Madill Isuzu offers a large array of parts and accessories, as well as top-quality service and advice for the Isuzu range.

“The family company has been in business for over 70 years and prides itself on being involved in the community.”

Well, Isuzu Truck customers can - after a team of Australian Isuzu truck dealer technicians took out second place at the 2014 Isuzu World Technical Competition held in Tokyo, Japan last month.

Now in its ninth year, the competition, fondly referred to as the ‘I-1 Grand Prix’, sees Isuzu truck technicians from around the world going head-to-head in a series of challenges including measurement accuracy, vehicle inspection standards, fault identification, repair ability and theoretical understanding.

The 2014 competition was split into two emissions categories. Category A was fought out between countries with EURO IV and above emissions levels, and Category B for those countries with emission levels below EURO IV.

IAL National Training Manager, David Smith, said this year’s national team was selected from a gifted pool of technicians from the market-leading Isuzu Truck Dealer Network.

“The ‘I-1’ continues to set the bar in terms of mechanical skills challenges worldwide, so we couldn’t be happier with the result.

“I think it gives our customers excellent peace of mind knowing the level of skill our technicians possess, and that their purchase is being extremely well looked after when they come in for a service.”

It’s not often you can book your vehicle in for a service safe in the knowledge it’ll be looked over by some of the world’s finest service technicians.

Madill Isuzu is moving up in the trucking world after relocating to larger, more modern premises.

TRUCK OF THE YEAR

JAMES AND CHERIE PILDITCH James and Cherie Pilditch run a commercial landscaping business requiring a lot of travel time.

After owning Isuzus for most of his working life, choosing a vehicle in which to spend a lot of time in was an easy decision for James.

The Pilditch’s Isuzu 4x4 FSS 550 features both the hardware and the comfort to allow them to mix business and pleasure.

“It never fails to turn heads and even featuring as part of a guided bus tour when we stayed at the Undara Lava Tubes National Park.” James said.

The outfit includes a mini excavator with extra buckets and all the tools of the trade to allow their travelling business to grow.

Rounding out the package is a tinnie, all terrain buggy and two kayaks to keep the couple busy after hours.

COLIN & ROBYN CROSSWELL Colin & Robyn Crosswell have travelled right across Australia in their Isuzu NPS 250 including both the most easterly and westerly points of our country.

Featuring a slide-on camper, the vehicle is modified to allow the Crosswells to tow their 5.2 m Quintrex centre console boat to remote areas.

Inside the camper, a queen size bed, 140 litre fridge/freezer, a two burner cooktop, lounge area and toilet and shower offer maximum comfort.

Outside, the camper has a fridge on a slide out track, separate sealed storage for fuel and an 80-litre water tank.

The Crosswells’ have now done two trips into the Southerly area of Princess Charlotte Bay next to Bathurst Heads, a very remote camping area to access.

NEWINGTON TOWING Newington Towing has been operating for over 30 years and strives to cater to all towing and transportation requirements throughout Sydney’s Inner West.

With four Isuzu’s already on their fleet, the business is looking to add number five in 2015

NICK MENSINGA Nick Mensinga’s small business of growing and delivering flowering annuals and vegetable seedlings to major chains, supermarkets and independent garden centres prompted his initial need for an Isuzu SBR truck.

Nowadays, Nick has an entire Isuzu fleet including an FSR 550, an FRR 550 and an NPR 200.

When Nick needed to add some size to his fleet, he couldn’t go past Isuzu.

“For price and reliability, in over 25 years the Isuzu trucks have never let us down,” he said.

The vehicles (and their drivers) work hard, including twice weekly trips to Canberra and Goulburn from the business base in Howlong, NSW totalling about 800-900km per outing.

PHIL MUUS – TMA HIRE When a business is established to provide a safe worksite to the construction and road maintenance industry, a safe and reliable truck is of course a necessity.

At TMA Hire, their Isuzu FVD 1000 is designed as a crash cushion truck for works on major freeways.

It is energy absorbent to withstand a vehicle hitting the backend at speed. Its main job is to protect Traffic Controllers as they setup lane closures on freeways.

BEN HENNOCKBen Hennock has recently added two Isuzu trucks to his fleet due to ongoing demand from his growing business.

‘Wash It Australia Mobile Truck’ offers a complete mobile washing system across several states of Australia.

The company is committed to providing an environmentally friendly service wherever possible with all vehicles fully equipped with the latest and most efficient cleaning machinery.

All of Ben’s vehicles are custom painted with the company’s trademark Wash It ‘bubbles’ and stainless steel accessories.

TRUCK OF THE YEARHARRY AND JOAN BROWN “Some Isuzu’s are meant for real hard work.” And according to Harry and Joan Brown, their Isuzu FRR does exactly that.

With a smart car, quad bike and two kayaks in tow, no one’s likely to argue with that either.

The interior of the Browns’ Isuzu is better equipped than some people’s houses. Including a washing machine, dryer, foldout barbecue, fire-pot and firewood, 2.8 kW remote start genset, a fridge and that all important Wi-Fi.

The Browns’ say their motor home unit turns heads wherever they go and is photographed extensively. It drives so well that Harry prefers to drive the Isuzu over the Smart Car that he carries on the back.

SIMON LEVER Simon Lever purchased his Isuzu NPR 275 as a standard trade pack but has since customised the truck to better suit the requirements of his construction business.

Adding a custom tray body, 250 litre aluminium fuel tank and aluminium tool boxes, Simon’s Isuzu is used for general day to day duties within his business, namely transportation of equipment.

Simon is so happy with the performance and reliability of the truck, he’s also looking at purchasing an Isuzu Tipper to add to his growing business.

JOHN & ANNETTE WAIDE When John Waide updated his mobile seed grading machine for his Seed Grading & Treating business, he purchased a new Isuzu 1500 to transport it.

“The Isuzu is the perfect truck for the job as it is comfortable and has plenty of power,” he said.

With a unique colour combination, John says he receives many compliments on the appearance of his Isuzu. And with all that attention he makes sure to keep it clean and shiny at all times!

JOHAN AND WILANDA BAKKER Currently travelling around Australia in their Isuzu NPS 300, Johan and Wilanda Bakker are thrilled with their converted motorhome which has, “proven its reliability during our travels and never let us down”.

The Bakkers’ have ventured to the Kimberleys in their Isuzu, The Gulf-Savannah area, Cape York, and driven the Great Central Road.

For their travels they keep on board a 300 litre diesel tank, 210 litres of fresh water, a grey water tank, three 140 watt solar panels as well as a selection of other modern comforts. The setup allows for the Bakker’s to go off-road and off the grid for a week or more.

SPECIALIZED Supporting their customers at road cycling, triathlon and mountain bike events all over Australia is now a possibility for Specialized Bicycle Components, and all thanks to the addition of an Isuzu FXL 1500 to their business.

Purposely designed with a mobile sales kiosk, the truck can also convert to a customised sales and exhibition space that can travel to all the same places as those on two wheels.

The interior of the truck was designed by the in-house retail services team at Specialized, and was fitted out by Brimarco.

Additional features include a 240-volt switchboard as well as a 6kva generator, which runs on the diesel fuel from the chassis main fuel tank.
