from the director what’s happening at richland libraries

I just finished I’m just starting I can’t stop listening to You don’t want to miss

Have you ever caught sight of yourself in a mirror and thought “Maybe it’s time for a new look?”

Could be those acid washed jeans you can still rock (good for you!) or that closet full of plaid flannel

shirts and Doc Martens that are still your go-to wardrobe staples. Or maybe you have a

haircut that could just as easily be from 1963 as 2013? On the outside, you look dated and out of

touch, but inside you still feel young and vibrant. That’s exactly how we felt.

Guess who’s starting the year with a makeover?

It’s your very own library! Noticed? We sure hope

so. We’ve got a new, contemporary look that better

reflects how we and our customers feel about what

we do. Hopefully you’ve noticed the new logo

on our signs and the shortened name - bringing

the focus to the word “library.” Our new tagline,

“Access Freely,” is exactly how we want you to use

and think of all the wonderful resources we offer.

But while much of this may sound cosmetic, our makeover is more than skin

deep. For the past two years, our staff has been working hard to change who

we are from the inside out. Like any good company, we understand that we

have promised things to you and we intend to deliver. We promise to be:

Welcoming - We are not only friendly, we are familiar. We pride ourselves on our hospitality and treat our customers like guests.

Caring - You use the library because you need something we have to offer - but the reason you’ll return is because you know we care.

Committed to Offering You the Best - We are passionate about what we do. We pride ourselves on being ahead of the curve.

Helpful - We jump at the chance to help. We are flexible and try to eliminate barriers. We always work to put “Yes” before “No.”

Fresh and Fun - We work to be current and interesting. We look for ways to have fun at work, to share our passions and interests with you.

Ever used the saying “Pretty is as pretty does?” That’s what comes to mind when I read our promises. No matter how exciting

our makeover is, how we act is what people will remember.

Warmly,

Melanie Huggins | Executive Director

New Look. Same Mission. Our library is a contemporary, vibrant organization, valued and

supported by the community and customers like you. Now, we

have a brand – the visual look and feel – that reflects this. On

December 3, the Richland Library unveiled a new brand, which

included a name change, a new logo and a new website at

RichlandLibrary.com.

The logo demonstrates the evolution of the library, leaving

itself to interpretation by the viewer. It respects the tradition

of the library, while looking forward to and embracing its

future. Some may see a book, an eReader or a laptop. The

logo is both traditional and digital, bold yet simple, new

and recognizable. The color blue, perhaps one of the most

well-liked colors, is refreshing, imaginative, approachable,

established and stable.

We’ve spent the last several months developing the library’s

brand and considering how the community views and uses

the library. With the help of the local agency ADCO, we’ve

developed the look and feel of our brand, and tested it

with actual and potential customers. Implementation of the

brand is all about our customers though, ensuring a qual ity,

personalized experience that exceeds expectations.

The Richland Library provides resources and information that

advances our community. Access freely!

What’s your favorite thing about the library?

The library is the common dominator - everyone belongs here!

What surprised you most about the library

once you started working here?

The diversity of services, collections and people inspires me every

day. Whether you like the convenience of downloading books to your

iPad or the feel of a good paperback, the library has you covered.

Where else can you view a gallery art exhibit, download the latest

Avett Brothers song, book a personal librarian and research your

family tree all within three short escalator rides? Amazing!

What did you want to be as a child?

A cast member of “Hee Haw.” Sadly, the show was cancelled before I

got my shot at down home country stardom.

How does your job help the library and the community?

As part of the Business and Job Center Team, I encourage, inform

and coach job seekers every day to acquire the skills and confidence

they need to move forward toward fulfilling employment.

What reality TV would you like to star in?

Real Housewives of Columbia. My tag line? “In a city that’s famously

hot, I’m one cool librarian. When you judge this book by its cover,

you will want to check it out.”

I couldn’t live without:

Goodwill, Unsweet Peach Tea and Fresh Basil

Library Director, Board Member Honored for Community ImpactThe South Carolina Library Association named Richland Library’s Executive Director

Melanie Huggins as the 2012 South Carolina Outstanding Librarian at the end of

October.

Huggins joined the library in 2009 and is currently vice chair/chair elect of the Urban

Libraries Council and President of the SC Association of Public Library Administrators.

She has also served on the IMLS National Task Force to Define 21st Century Skills

for Museums and Public Libraries and is an active member of the American Library

Association and the Public Library Association.

“Melanie’s passion for her work, vision for the future of libraries and dedication

to our profession have made her a leader in South Carolina and beyond,” noted

Richland Library Outreach Manager Georgia Coleman in her nomination. “Under her

leadership, the library has refreshed its mission, enhanced the customer experience

and brought it back to the forefront of our community.”

Library Board Member Bob Gahagan, who was instrumental in bringing Huggins to

the library in 2009, was also honored as the 2012 South Carolina Outstanding Trustee.

Nominated for his more than eight years of dedication to Richland Library’s Board

of Trustees, Gahagan is also a member of the library’s Foundation Board of Trustees

and has been influential in recruiting new foundation board members tasked with

pursuing substantial, long-term funding for the library’s capital needs.

“Bob is a gifted leader with the expertise and capacity to motivate and cultivate

board members,” said Huggins. “His sense of humor, coupled with his inspiring

dedication to the education and well-being of our community, is contagious to all

who have the pleasure of serving under his leadership.”

When Sam moves to Jackson, Mississippi,

she encounters a world very different from the

one she left in Pennsylvania. The year is 1962,

and Sam and her mother, an art professor, find

themselves at the center of the struggle for civil

rights. Sam takes pictures of a sit-in and uses her

camera to try to understand the discrimination

she sees all around her. Can she find a source of

light amid all the hate?

This novel, perfect for middle and high school

students, shows the 1960s South from new

perspective and offers an honest glimpse at

both sides of the Civil Rights movement.
