Dear Friends:

Partnerships are hard. If you’ve ever been in a relationship, a marriage or have

a close friend, you know what I’m talking about. Put two people together and

ask them to work towards a common goal and there’s bound to be tension. But

what if it’s not just two people but whole organizations with complex systems

and processes trying to work together towards solving community problems?

Librarians are some of the smartest people around, and we know we don’t

have all the tools or skills we need to help our customers with all of their needs.

That’s why we actively seek out good partners. If you’re struggling in your part-

nerships or still aren’t convinced that collaborations are beneficial, maybe some

things I’ve learned through years of partnerships will help. Here goes:

• Know why you’re partnering. Clearly articulate what’s in it for your customers or end users before you even start dreaming

up the next big program or dividing up tasks. If you aren’t on the same page about what you are trying to accomplish and for

whom, you may need to look elsewhere for a better fit. A sure recipe for disaster is if the only reason you to have to partner is

money (saving it or getting more of it) or recognition for your organization. It has to be about outcomes for people.

• Partnerships do not mean sharing the work equally. In fact, they are rarely a 50/50 endeavor. In any collaboration, there

will be times when you feel like you’re pulling more than your share of the weight or that your talents are not being utilized

to the fullest. It’s important to take a long view of what your partnership goals are, understanding that the return on your

investment in the partnership might come later and in bigger ways down the road. So don’t get discouraged if you feel like

the grunt work is all your responsibility today. If you’ve chosen a good partner, they’ll have your back when you need it.

• Be clear about your expectations. Write them down, share them and agree on them before you start the real work.

The biggest pitfall in well-meaning partnerships is not being explicit about who will do what and when. While no one wants

to start a partnership assuming things will go wrong, it’s helpful to discuss upfront how you will handle disagreements and

how you will determine whether the relationship warrants continuing. If what I’m suggesting sounds a little like couples

counseling, then you understand correctly.

I believe that we are better when we work together or the library wouldn’t have so many strong partners. No question that

partnerships take more work and more time than going it alone. But the benefits to our community are more meaningful,

have broader impact and are more likely to be sustained if we work as a team.

Warmly,

Melanie Huggins, Executive Director

What’s your favorite thing about working at the library?

I’ve always loved books and computers,

and, as a library employee, I work with

both. I also enjoy helping people.

If you could trade places with one person for the day, dead or alive, who would it be?

I would choose to be someone who

influenced life far beyond his death

in the late 1700s—Benjamin Franklin,

whose multiple successes as an author,

printer, political theorist, politician,

postmaster, scientist, musician, inventor,

satirist, statesman and diplomat reveal

him to be a brilliant man who left a lasting

mark on the world. He also facilitated

many civic developments including

libraries, a fire department and a

university. I think he would enjoy working

at Richland Library for the day.

Outside of the library, what is one of your favorite hobbies?

I love music - its history, legends and performance.

Describe life at the library in three words or less.

Always something new.

How do you think the library inspires the community?

Accessible online and in person,

the library offers far more than books,

recordings and videos. From the

language development and love of

learning inspired by children’s storytimes

and adult activities to personal assistance

in research, both academic and for real

life needs, such as employment, the

library inspires citizens to seek their

highest goals.

Augusta Baker’s Dozen Storytelling

Celebration, Richland Library’s annual

storytelling event, cosponsored by the

University of South Carolina School of

Library and Information Science and the

Richland Library Friends, occurs every

April and brings to life the world of

storytelling and children’s literature.

The celebration honors the works and

achievements of nationally-known author

and storyteller Augusta Baker.

A native of El Paso, Texas, Pat Mora

grew up enveloped in the Chicano

culture and has spent her life writing

books that embody the family values

she has carried since childhood.

Inspired by her Mexican-American

heritage, Mora stirs creativity in her

readers by placing them under the

open sky of the Texas desert where

she learned the importance of

embracing her surroundings.

Traveling the country to promote

literacy, Mora is on a mission to

inspire readers by expressing the

Chicano culture in ways that no other

writer can. Her most recent books,

I Pledge Allegiance and Bravo, Chico

Canta! Bravo!, are scheduled for

release this spring.

In addition to her writing career, Mora

is a mother of three and has worked as

a teacher, university administrator and

museum director. She has also spent

time leading efforts to promote literacy

and what she commonly refers to as

bookjoy. Stressing the importance of

preserving the Chicano perspective in

American society, she considers herself

an advocate of Mexican-American

values and traditions. She has recently

founded several reading initiatives

aimed at children and families in

Spanish-speaking communities.

Mora has received Honorary Doctorates

from North Carolina State University and

SUNY Buffalo, an Honorary Membership

in the American Library Association,

a Civitella Ranieri Fellowship to write

in Umbria, Italy, and a Distinguished

Alumni Award from the University of

Texas at El Paso. She was a recipient

and judge of a Poetry Fellowship from

the National Endowment for the Arts

and a recipient and advisor of the

Kellogg National Leadership

Fellowships.

April 4 – May 8The Gallery at Main

ALEJANDRO GARCIA-LEMOS exhibits

portraits of fellow artists and arts lovers in

the paintings that came primarily from his

and Cynthia Boiter’s visual and literary art

book, Red Social. The title of the book and

exhibition, Red Social, translates to Social

Network in García-Lemos’s native Spanish.

García-Lemos, originally from Bogotá,

Colombia, focused on relationship-building

and the community of fellow artists and arts

lovers in his new home in Columbia, S.C.

The sitters for each portrait, almost all of

whom were close members of his newly

formed community, were asked to bring

symbolic icons for their sittings.
