Overview

• Developed as part of a study series for the Architect Registration Examination, this

session provides an overview of current ADA Standards and how the standards are

applied in the design and construction of multiple building types. Applicable building

codes related to ADA Standards will be reviewed and discussed.

• Participants will examine the current ADA Standards, adopted by the US

Department of Justice, and how they differ from the previous standards.

• Participants will consider how to apply the ADA Standards in multiple building types.

• Participants will examine design elements and products that comply with the

Standards, including proper signage, ramps, barriers, access areas and hardware.

• Participants will consider current building codes that relate to ADA Standards and

various compliance strategies.

Scope of Accessibility for New

All Temporary or Permanent Shall be Accessible

2012 IBC §1103, includes 15 exceptions• Detached 1 & 2 Family Dwellings & </= 3 dwelling units

• Employee work areas less than 300 sf in area

• Live/Work Units, R-1 uses such as Bed and Breakfast (< 5 sleeping units), daycare

facilities (portion not used for daycare).

• Utility Buildings, Limited access spaces (non-occupiable), Equipment Spaces, Single-

Occupant Structures, walk-in coolers.

• Construction Sites

• Detention and correctional facilities: common use areas that are used only by inmates

or detainees and security personnel and that do not serve cells that are required to be

accessible.

• Raised Areas (used for security, life safety, or fire safety) – observation galleries, prison

guard towers, fire towers, lifeguard stands.
