ACCESSIBLE TOURISM GUIDE

This project emerged with the intention of bringing tourism closer to all the population, although it is

meant fordisabled tourists and it includes the idea of making our city more accessible.

Nowadays, changes happen so fast that in only a few years the concept of accessible tourism itself,

understood as that one which follows the supression of architectural barriers, is evolving into the

concept of tourism for everyone. This shows the wishfor a 'global' tourism: for every individual, with

no barriers at all.

From our town, we would like to offer this Accessible Tourism Guide. It is mainly oriented to people

with reduced mobility and need to make use of wheelchairs. In this way, we show you three

accessible routes that can be carried out depending on every specific situation.

• Gastronomic accessible route It is focused on 2 areas: the city centre and the outskirts. The latter

is to be taken while carrying out the environmental route.

• Environmental accessible routeThis route lets you know the wide variety of services and

facilities we can offer from the Beach Deparment to disabled and non-disabled people. These

services and facilities are fully provided during beach season (from April to September).

Moreover, this route includes the following natural spaces: the pine forest, the dunes, the fishing

weirs and the botanical garden. A wooden walkway runs between the trees and the beach and has

lookout points and accesses to it for you to enjoy this route.

• Historical-cultural accessible routeThe main tourist attractions in Rota when it comes to history

and culture: Churches, Castle, Lighthouses and Arches.

This guide has been made by members of a Regional Plan for Youth Employment, hoping

our fellow citizens and visitors find this information useful.

HISTORICAL-CULTURAL ACCESIBLE ROUTE

Duration: 2 hours approx. Distance: 2 Km approx. Difficulty: low.

From ‘Plaza de España’, go to ‘Castillo de Luna’ passing by Italia, GarcíaLópez and San Clemente Streets. These are typical narrow whitewashed streets full of flowerpots, which were built in the Middle Ages around the Castle. The ‘Castillo de Luna’ is rectangular in shape and has five towers with battlements. It was built in the 13th century on an old Muslim ribat, which is a small fortification. Its historic importance is shown in the 185 tiles which comprise the mural at the main entrance. This mural represents the visit of the Catholic Monarchs in 1477. Queen Isabella I of Castile and King Ferdinand II of Aragon were invited by D. Rodrigo Ponce de León.

In its interior you will find a courtyard built in the 15th century. It preserves not only the original columns and balustrade, but also mural paintings of Mudejar style. In the 20th century, the Castle served as a hospital and school. It was restored in the late 1900s and nowadays it serves as the seat of Rota’s Town Hall. The Castle is accessible, with the exception of the upper part where the roof is found. On the ground floor, you can find Rota’s Tourist Office where you can ask for any information such as the schedules to visit the different attractions in our town

.

After having enjoyed the Castle, you will now visit the ‘Iglesia de la O’. D. Rodrigo Ponce de León commissioned the construction of this Church in the 16th century. The interior of the Church stands out because of the combination of different styles: Gothic, Elizabethan, Plateresque and Baroque. In the beginning, only the main nave was built, which consists of three splendid vaults separated by two big arches supported by plain-shaft columns. Subsequently, in the 17th and 18th centuries, five side chapels were added. There are two items to highlight: the magnificent cedarwood and mahogany choir made by D. Diego de Roldán and the pipe organ made by D. Juan Debono, both from the 18th century. You can get into the Church with the help of a ramp located next to the main entrance. After having seen these two delightful monuments, if you go to the street which is in front of the main entrance, taking the ramp with its respective landings, you will go through a little pointed arch. Once you go through it, you will get to the

boardwalk where you can enjoy one of the most incredible views of ‘La Costilla’ beach, a 4-kilometer-long beach of fine golden sand.If you continue to the left, surrounding the ‘Duque de Nájera’ Hotel, you will find 2 lighthouses. The Old Lighthouse from 1909 is located on the very same ‘PuertadelMuelle’ (Pier Gate) of the old walled town. It is 15 meters above sea level and 9 meters above ground level. The New Lighthouse from 1980 is a 28-meter-tall cylindrical tower made of reinforced concrete. It is 34 meters above sea level and nowadays it is the operational lighthouse.

Page 4: Accessible Tourism Guide. Rota 2015

On the right, there is a marina, which was built in 1992. Then, go to ‘San Juan de Puerto Rico’ Ave. until you find a very inclined ramp on the left of a roundabout. If you go up that ramp, you will get to ‘Pasadillas’ Street where the remains of the old ‘Puerta de Jerez’ (Jerez Gate) are. A little bit further, you will find the ‘Mirador de lasAlmenas’ (‘Las Almenas’ tree-lined square) where you can enjoy the magnificent views of ‘El Rompidillo‘ beach as well as the marina. Behind that square, the ‘Plaza de Abastos’ (Market) can be found. It was previously an old Monastery of the Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mercy built in the 17th century, whose only remain is the ‘Torre de la Merced’ (Tower of Mercy). The original tower was destroyed by a storm in 1722. Taking the street next to the Market, you will get to its main entrance where you will be only able to see the exterior of the restored tower. Leaving the Market, you get to Veracruz Street and on the left it is the ‘Arco de la Villa’ (Rota’s Arch). This was the main gate of the old walled city and it is connected to Sanlúcar de Barrameda. Due to the commercial trade which existed around this gate, the Town Hall was established there. At this point, you will be where the route started so the tour would be concluded.
