Vascular Access in Fire & EMS

    CLINICAL & ECONOMIC CHALLENGES

    FACING PREHOSPITAL PROVIDERS

No direct palpation after cleaning the site Pressure to gain vascular access More educated patients Clinicians need a better tool Improve infection controlPARAMEDICS SHARE THEIR EXPERIENCESUSING THE ACCUVEIN AV300

A 911 call was received by our dispatch that a patient was enroute to our station with a 33-week pregnant patient that had been involved in a severe fall. The patient needed to beextricated from the van and was in shock. Upon exam of this very obese black patient (300 plus

pounds), no veins could be palpated; I employed the AccuVein AV300 and was able to start anIV on the first attempt.

The AccuVein AV300 helps us start peripheral lines on patients we otherwise would not havebeen able to get IV access. Now we can deliver medications much more efficiently. Thistechnology has been particularly beneficial on bariatric patients where visualizing and palpatingveins can be challenging. It is one of those tools we find we are using more and more

frequently, and improves overall patient care.

In my 29 years of service as a Paramedic, this is one of the few times that I have used a toolthat improves patient outcomes, reduces the risk of infection, and provides cost savings. The

AV300 AccuVein is a true lifesaver.

The cost savings using the AccuVein far exceed the cost of IO Drill needles ($100.00 each). Ifa service were to use the AccuVein only once a week, there would be a three-fold cost savingsover the use of the IO Drill, and the risk avoidance of severe infection is a significant benefit aswell.

Upon arrival at the Emergency Department, I overheard the staff comment that the patient inMajor Treatment Room One was a very difficult IV stick. I told the staff about the AccuVein andthe ER doctor said: Grab your little machine and follow me. The ER doctor and staffemployed the AccuVein on an obese African American female in renal failure with first attempt

    success.

Reduce unnecessary IV start kits Reduce treatment delays Increase clinical efficiency Add value with tangible ROI Patient satisfaction
