The accession followed the death of her father, King George VI while the Princessandherhusband,PrincePhillip,wereinKenyaearlyinatouroftheBritish Commonwealth. This tour, which was to include Australia and New Zealand,wasbeingundertakenonbehalfoftheKingwhowasgravelyillatthe time of its commencement.

This 2 coin set was released by the Canberra Mint to celebrate the 50th anniversary in 2002 with a $100 1oz 99.9% pure gold proof and 50¢ silver proof.

Mint records indicate that just 1,500 sets were issued. The coins are housed, individually encapsulated, in a rich red velvet, hinged-lid presentation case with a replica crown affixed to the outside lid. The coins are complemented by a numbered, gold plated and frosted-finish inscription plate together with a certificate of authenticity.

This note was an interim emergency issue, printed at the Government Printing Office by the Government Stamp Printer, to meet the large demand for banknotes generated during the early years of World War I. It was known as the 'rainbow note' because of the colours in the design which merged from light blue ends through green to bright orange in the centre of the front.
