Become Certified in ESOL/Bilingual

There are over 11,000 designated English Learners (ELs) in Delaware’s K-12 schools and many more bilingual students in mainstream classes. Teachers and specialists who are certified in ESOL/Bilingual education are best qualified to provide students access to both language development and academic content.

The University of Delaware’s Additional Certification in ESOL/Bilingual (ACE) course of study includes the five classes that will enable current K-12 teachers and reading specialists to prepare for certification in ESOL/Bilingual.

Taught by UD faculty trained in education, applied linguistics and language pedagogy, ACE prepares educators to support ELLs in mainstream and sheltered settings, and enables English partner teachers in two-way immersion programs to promote all students’ language development.

Tuition Assistance

There are a number of scholarships and funding programs available to reduce tuition costs:

• Teachers with Emergency Certification in ESOL/Bilingual may be eligible for the Critical Needs Scholarship. This may cover up to the full cost of two or three courses.

• Some districts offer tuition reimbursement and/or ACE funding.

• UD’s College of Education and Human Development will waive the tuition for the fifth and final course.

* Individual finances may vary. Additional fees may apply.

Teachers who complete the course of study may benefit from a 15-hour credit step salary increase. Some courses may be transferred into the MA TESL at UD.
