On the 25th and 26th of March 2011, the Association for Common European Nursing Diagnoses, Interventions and Outcomes is celebrating its eighth European Conference under the title ‘e-Health and Nursing. How can e-Health promote patient safety?’

Important speakers will be attending and sharing with all the participants their experience and knowledge about e - H e a l t h a n d N u r s i n g , S t a n d a r d i z a t i o n , C r o s s - B o r d e r Electronic Health Records, and the Nurse's Role in Creating a Safe Environment for Patients.

But there is still the possibility that some of you do not know why should you be attending!!!

Let me tell you why:

You are very interested in the subject and you want to know more.

You know nothing about the subject but you can see that now is the time for action? You have been in the ACENDIO European conferences and you cannot miss this one?

ACENDIO will have its 16th anniversary this year. So, we c a n c o n g r a t u l a t e a “teenager”. What is typical for teenagers? Usually they are lively and determined, s o m e t i m e s a l i t t l e u n p r e d i c t a b l e , h o w e v e r m o s t l y c o o p e r a t i v e a n d e s p e c i a l l y v e r y w e l l networked. I think this applies to our association as

well! With this metaphor I’ll greet you as the President of ACENDIO for the last time. I joined the association in 1998 with an aim to find colleagues who shared the same interest – unified nursing language to be used for electronic nursing documentation – and I found them.

In 1995, when ACENDIO was established, a unified nursing language was a big challenge for nurses in many countries. The existing nursing classifications originally developed in the USA – for example, NANDA, Omaha and Home Health Care Classification - were mostly used in paper-based documentation systems and standardization was a rare term for nurses. Electronic information systems processed orders and administrative data but European nursing care plans were seldom computerized despite the Swedish VIPS model for nursing documentation. With the determination of international nurse experts, amongst whom were also our past President Dame June Clark and our past Newsletter Editor Anne Casey, the International Classification for Nursing Practice (ICNP) was published in 1999. This enormous endeavor encouraged new ideas about nursing terminology around the world.

ACENDIO is principally operating in Europe, where nurses are networked through national nurses’ associations. Some of these associations are also ACENDIO members strengthening and supporting terminology development in their countries. Through institutional and individual memberships the association is aiming to share information and knowledge to help each country achieve their objectives in nursing language development. Although the geography of Europe is complex, and health care service systems vary between and even within countries, it is very rewarding and fruitful to cooperate through ACENDIO. This is enhanced by the fact that the membership of ACENDIO represented 20 countries in 2010!

The task for an association such as ACENDIO is most demanding, with 50 sovereign states in the greater European area and 27 member states with recognition of 23 official languages in the European Union. Besides ACENDIO, some

countries have also established associations to operate more efficiently with their own language. AENDTE (Asociación Española de Nomenclatura, Taxonomía y Diagnóstico de Enfermería) and AFEDI (Association Francophone Européenne des Diagnostics Interventions Résultats Infirmiers) are good examples of associations that enhance nursing language development among Spanish and French speaking nurses. And not to forget the important role of EFN (European Federation of Nurses) in coordinating various nursing initiatives in Europe.

The adoption of a terminology developed in another language always involves cultural validation in order for its acceptance and use by nurses. The experiences and advances in other countries inform the validation process. Over the past 16 years, hundreds of presentations at ACENDIO conferences have focused on implementations of classifications in various countries. From the beginning, nursing diagnosis has been a common topic and it still seems to be a very demanding task to compile nursing minimum data sets. In conference presentations standardization has been a regular but relatively infrequent topic. I would, however, like to stress the importance of nurses being involved in standardization activities in their countries. This spring, in particular, nurses can become involved as revised version of ISO/CD 18104 standard “Health Informatics: Categorical structures for representation of nursing diagnoses and nursing actions in terminological systems” will be balloted on. This is the revision of ISO 18104:2003 – Health Informatics: Integration of a reference terminology model for nursing”. Nurses are encouraged to contact their ISO country representative to explain the importance of this standard to nursing. With this standard, nursing will have a greater possibility of being visible.

The 8th Biennial Conference of ACENDIO in Madeira on 25/26 March 2011 will soon be a reality. The conference, which has as its theme, eHealth and nursing – how can eHealth promote patient safety? will together bring nurses from many European countries as well as from overseas. The theme is timely and a high priority also in the agenda of both the WHO and the ICN. So, please, follow the ACENDIO website and acquaint yourself with the conference arrangements. You will find that the conference has an excellent, highly international programme in comfortable facilities and beautiful surroundings.

Just as teenagers mature towards adulthood, ACENDIO has good potential to move forward, with its existing and new networks, to strengthen nursing terminology work in Europe and globally. Through collaboration it will be possible to widen our scope of activities and become more proactive, reactive and visible together, as it seems that nursing terminology work has left at least its infancy in many European countries.

I would like to leave you with the very important message my dear friend and distinguished mentor, the living legend, Dr. Virginia Saba, taught me: “Only coded data can be re-used!” Let’s keep that in mind!

1." The procedure governing elections is set out in Article 6 of the ACENDIO Constitution.

In the event that there are no nominations received for a position in advance of the General Assembly, the returning officer retains the right to receive verbal nominations during the meeting.

Full Professor and Director of the graduate Program in Health Informatics at the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP).In 2004 she was elected International Member at the American College of Medical Informatics. Heimar Marin was also the President of Brazilian Society of Health Informatics (2002–2008); she is Associate-editor of the International Journal of Medical Informatics; and Elected Chair (2009–2012) of the International Medical Informatics Association Nursing Informatics Special Interest Group (IMIA NI SIG).Dr. Marin holds a position as Visiting Professor at Decision Systems Group at Harvard Medical School. She has over 250 publications. As a professor, she has mentored over 20 Ph.D. students, 32 master students, and 85 specialists in health and nursing informatics. Dr. Heimar Marin is a graduate of Nursing and holds a Master and Doctoral Degree in Health Informatics at UNIFESP. She is “Livre-Docente” at the Medical School, State University of São Paulo (FM-USP). She is a fellow in Clinical Computing at the Center for Clinical Computing at Harvard Medical School.Currently, she is the Executive Director of the Strategic Committee in Information Technology at UNIFESP and member of the Board of Trustees of the Hospital São Paulo, a teaching hospital of Universidade Federal de São Paulo.

Amy Coenen

Dr. Amy Coenen is a n A s s o c i a t e Professor at the U n i v e r s i t y o f W i s c o n s i n -Milwaukee College of Nursing. Her research has focused

on nursing and health care terminology standards for the electronic health record. Her areas of expertise include Nursing in Health Care Informatics and Health Care Terminology Standards.

Dr. Coenen is currently funded by the International Council of Nurses, in Geneva Switzerland , to serve as the Director of the International Classification for Nursing Practice (ICNP®) Programme. Dr. Coenen is a representative for the International Council of Nurses to the International Organization of Standards (ISO) Technical Committee 215-Healthcare Informatics. She is a member of the Steering Committee for the Canadian Health Outcomes for Better Information and Care (C-HOBIC) project. Also, Dr. Coenen is a member of the World Health Organization (WHO) Advisory Group for ICD-10 Mental Health Diagnosis & Classification.

Linda H. Aiken

PhD, RN conducts research on health care workforce and outcomes of health care in the United States and around the world.

She directs the Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research, and is The Claire M. Fagin Leadership Professor of Nursing and Sociology at University of Pennsylvania.

She co-chairs the U.S. Council on Physician and Nurse Supply that monitors trends in physician and nurse workforce and international health workforce migration to the U.S.

She has won numerous awards including the AcademyHealth Distinguished Investigator and Article of the Year awards, the Baxter International Graham Prize in Health Services Research, and the Individual Codman Award from the Joint Commission for her leadership utilizing performance measures to demonstrate relationships between nursing care and patient outcomes.

She was recently inducted into the Inaugural Sigma Theta Tau International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame and received the Inaugural American Nurses Credentialing Center’s HRH Princess Muna Al-Hussein Award for significant contributions to healthcare across borders.

Dr. Aiken is a former president of the American Academy of Nursing and an elected member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences.

She directs the Multi-State Nursing Care and Patient Safety Study in the U.S. and co-directs RN4CAST in 12 countries in Europe, China, South Africa, Botswana.

Dr. Aiken has consistently been included in Modern Health Care’s 100 Most Powerful People in Health Care in the U.S.

Abel Avelino de Paiva e Silva

Doctor in Nursing since 2002, Master in Nursing since 1996. Director of Nursing Program in the Porto College of Nursing. Professor-Coordinator in Porto College of Nursing. Chair of the Scientific Board of the Porto College of Nursing.

His present interest in Research is in the domain of Nursing Information Systems and Self Care. PresentaciónLas VIII Jornadas de AENTDE pretenden profundizar en el uso del NOC (Clasificación de Resultados Enfermeros) desde la perspectivade una de sus autoras, la profesora Elisabeth Swanson, y difundir las experiencias de las enfermeras españolas en el desarrollo funcionaly la aplicación clínica de la NOC con los sistemas de información en España.

Objetivos

Profundizar en el conocimiento para la utilización clínica de la NOC.

Conocer las líneas de investigación del NOC que se están desarrollando en la Universidad de Iowa.

Conocer las experiencias de las enfermeras españolas en el desarrollo funcional y la aplicación clínica del NOC que sedesarrollan en España.

Los participantes:

Identificarán, partiendo de un caso, las opciones de los distintos NOC que consideren más adecuados.

Reflexionarán sobre el trabajo realizado en el grupo.

MetodologíaLa presentación de contenidos teóricos se realizará a través de la Conferencia Magistral.El desarrollo práctico se llevará a cabo mediante un taller con grupos de análisis y reflexión. (Se recomienda traer al taller el libro de laNOC, aunque hay al menos 1-2 para cada grupo)
