Presenting two improved pocket resusci- tators. One has an oxygen inlet valve: easily connects to oxygen so you can provide oxygen enrichment with mouth- to-mouth resuscitation.

Both have a soft vinyl cuff (already permanently inflated). And pliable trans- parent dome that fits face snugly.. . gives clear view of nose and mouth. (Model with oxygen inlet valve also has head- strap.) Resuscitation is more effective because an enters nose and mouth simul- taneously. You work more confidently and effectively because there’s no mouth- to-mouth contact.

As contact lenses increase in popu- larity, emergency department per- sonne1 are seeing growing numbers of contact lens wearers. Proper tech- nique in removing the lenses can avoid possibie eye damage.

The American Optometric Associa- tion advises removal of the contact lenses as a safety precaution. Allow- ing the lenses to remain in the eye for any length of time when the wearer’s natural blinking mechanism is not functioning normally might result in cornea1 abrasion or other serious prob- lems. However, improper removal of the lenses can cause eye injuries, the Association cautions.

AMRA REAFFIRMS PATIENT RIGHT OF PRIVACY

Confidentiality of patient records was reaffirmed by action taken at the American Medical Record Association House of Delegates during its 46th Annual Meeting in San Francisco, California.

Their position paper stated “while the patient does not have the property right to his record, he does have the protected right of information . . . unless the patient can feel assured that the highly sensitive and personal in- formation he shares with health care professionals will remain confidential, he may withhold information critical to his treatment, thereby diminishing the quality of care provided him.”

The AMRA attributed much of the erosion of trust be- tween patient and physician, or other health care profes- sionals, to the high growth of computerized health data and interlocking record systems. A contributing factor is increasing demand for patient information by third party payers to substantiate claims for payment. AMRA ac- knowledged the need for patient health information to substantiate payment and evaluate care, but asserted that release of identifiable medical information must occur only with the authorization of the patient or legal agent.

CHICAGO OFFICE WORKERS RECEIVE CPR TRAINING

Thirty Chicago office workers in the 24-story Old Repub- lic Insurance building have been trained to give life- sustaining aid in the crucial first five minutes to persons stricken with heart attacks.

In October, the 30 volunteers attended their first three- hour clinic sponsored and taught by the Public Safety Officers Foundation (PSOF). They were taught a simple technique of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), re- ceived an orientation in basic anatomy, and were trained to deal with airway obstructions, pulmonary arrest, car- diac seizures and serious threats to life resulting from electric hazards and water accidents.

Jan Schwettman, executive coordinator of PSOF, ex- plained, “We are aiming our course mainly at people who work in high rise ,buildings because emergency medical teams often find it impossible to reach victims of heart arrest at these locations within the crucial first five min- utes of an attack.”

According to Ms. Schwettman, the American Medical Association is among the organizations requesting that the PSOF offer a CPR clinic for its employees.
