In April, GVI Curieuse Science Co-ordinator Cheryl Sanchez travelled to Turkey to present a

 poster at the International Sea Turtle Symposium on all the great work eing done y sta!! 

and volunteers here on Curieuse"

#romoting research and the importance o! Curieuse as a sea turtle nesting area are high priorities !or GVI and its partners, and the International Sea Turtle Symposium $ISTS%

 provided a per!ect venue !or sharing our sea turtle work" The International Sea Turtle Society

is a non-pro!it organisation which gathers annually !or a symposium, ringing people

together !rom all over the world to share their research and conservation e!!orts" &ou may e

wondering, how many people can possily e doing sea turtle work that there is a symposium

dedicated to these species' The symposium rings together people !rom over () countries

with sometimes more than *))) people+ As you can see, this was an incredile opportunity to

raise international awareness o! Curieuse and its wonder!ul wildli!e"

The Saturday and Sunday, pre-symposium, were !ull o! workshops and meetings" Sunday was

the A!rica regional meeting, where people convened to discuss the speci!ic issues and also thesuccess stories o! this massive region" There was a large !ocus on the est ways to gain the

support o! the community and the government, and Cheryl was ale to speak aout Curieuse

and the work that GVI and the Seychelles ational #arks Authority have een doing"

The symposium o!!icially started on )th

April and ended on the evening o! the . rd" The keynote speaker opened the symposium

!ocusing solely on climate change, sea turtles and how to use sea turtles as a !lagship !or drawing attention to the iological conse/uences o! climate change" 0ther talks covered

topics on genetics, population iology, physiology and health, in-water iology, nesting

 iology, conservation, management and policy, !isheries and threats, education, outreach, and

advocacy" There were also poster presentations 1onday, Tuesday, and 2ednesday, allowing

Cheryl and others to share their stories, and many people were amazed that Curieuse3s small

amount o! each held so many hawksill nests" There were also others who have worked with

GVI programs, such as in Costa 4ica and 1e5ico, and they all had wonder!ul things to say

aout GVI in those areas"

6or Cheryl the e5perience o! going to Turkey, meeting and networking with sea turtle

researchers and iologists !rom all over the world, and promoting Curieuse Island was anun!orgettale e5perience" Curieuse Island may e small, ut its importance won3t e

overlooked+
