Welcome to the first newsletter for the year! As this fortnight’s value focus is contentment, I would like to express how content I am with how well the year has begun.

The new staff members have embraced the college, the values and their classes. The school captains, SRC and sustainability leaders have been inducted and have embraced their leadership roles.

Our Year 7 information evening was very successful; from the comments shared, the entire cohort is content with where they are. I am extremely grateful for the attendance and the positive comments that everyone shared.

Such contentment is the outcome of an approach to situations, which has a significant effect on our wellbeing. The difference between a positive and a negative situation isn’t in the external circumstances, but our mindset. If we appreciate what we have, instead of focusing on the things we don’t, we can be happy without changing anything else. We don’t need to wait until we’ve made our life ‘perfect’—we have everything we need to be happy right now.

At Sathya Sai College we encourage students to strive for a peaceful life. When we let go of images of perfection, we realise that we are already exactly who we should be. All our need for self-improvement, and all the activity, effort and pain that implies fades away. We can be happy with ourselves, and nothing else is needed.

We are enough, we don’t need more, and we aren’t missing out.

Open your heart and see what is already here.

    Cal Atkins

    COMMUNITIES ENVIRON GRANT

We are pleased to announce that we have been successful in our application for a grant to fund the Sathya Sai College Boundary Bush Regeneration program.

The successful grant is funded under the Communities Environment Program (CEP) and will run over one year in 2020. The Australian Government announced the program as a measure to support small scale, community-led environment projects that address local environmental priorities across Australia.

The objectives of the program are to:• deliver positive environmental and social outcomes• give communities the resources, skills and knowledge to care for the

    environment.

The intended outcomes of the program are:• improved management of native species, including threatened species,

and their habitat• improved management of the environment, including coastal, wetland

and riparian areas• reduced levels of threats and risks to the environment, including from the

impact of litter/waste, run-off to waterways, feral animals, diseases and weeds

    • increased community knowledge of, and participation in, activities that protect and restore environmental assets

    • increased community connection with the natural environment in the local area.

The project aims to regenerate an area of native rainforest vegetation within Sathya Sai High School Campus. The rainforest strip is degraded by a range of weeds including Camphor Laurel, Lantana and exotic grasses. The native rainforest trees have been impacted and natural regeneration of rainforest species is inhibited by the ground-cover weeds. The project objectives include; mapping, bush regeneration and monitoring with the school community and student body.

Experienced bush regenerators will guide and assist with weed control to improve the condition of the native vegetation and encourage natural regeneration. These actions will also enhance habitat for native wildlife and engage the school community in educational activities.

KOREAN STUDENT VISITOn Wednesday 26th February, the secondary campus was very fortunate to host 5 students from Korea until lunch time. The students have been visiting Australia since January and have had many wonderful experiences. They greatly appreciated their time at Sathya Sai College because they were given an opportunity to interact with people of a similar age and compare interests and lifestyles.

Our students also gained much from the experience and despite their brief visit, friendships were already formed. It is hoped that another opportunity to connect with some of our South Korean neighbours will be possible later in the year.

If any families would be interested in hosting a Korean student for approximately 3 weeks please leave your details with Kirsty in the office.

NEW STAFFThis is my first year at Sathya Sai College.

I have worked casually as a Teacher ’s Aide and Learning Support Officer on and off for the last 20 years.

I have an extensive background in youth work since the mid 90’s and I can confidently say that working with the students and staff at SSC has been the most satisfying and pleasurable work environment in my career.

I look forward to meeting you all in the future.

Andrew (Andy) McTavish, Learning Support Officer

    Bridget Boserio, English and Commerce

Hello, I am Bridget Boserio. I have come from Wollumbin High School, where I worked from 2011 to 2019.

This year, I will be teaching my area of specialty; English and conducting lessons in my second area of interest, Commerce.

I will be a member of our Learning and Support Team, conducting literacy and other diagnostics, to assist with modifications for students who need support and those who require extending.

Prior to teaching, I practised as a Family Lawyer. My choice of career change allows me to educate young minds to be strong and resilient but also skilled in navigating their lives into adulthood with confidence.

My favourite thing to do is surfing and I have an interest in playing sports. I look forward to connecting with all members of the Sathya Sai community and having a lasting positive impact within the school.

I moved to the Tweed Valley six years ago with my husband and four kids and have been teaching at Kyogle High School for the past five years.

I am a Science / PDHPE teacher with years of experience teaching both the NSW and QLD curriculum.

YEAR 9 & 10 VISUAL ART The first four weeks of this year have flown by. Students are deep in the planning process and working hard to incorporate the ideas of other artists and their own in the development of the Visual Art process and their final artwork for the term.

Every now and then a student will approach me and share some of their artwork from home. I honour these times because I know and understand what courage it takes to be brave enough to step out of your comfort zone and share what has been created.

One of those moments came last week when a Year 9 student was brave enough to share some of her art work. During a lesson last week Marley in Year 9 shared some of her current drawing project. It was one of those wonderful teaching moments I will cherish forever, where all I had to do was hold the space while the students shared their praise and wonderful positive comments on the artwork we were looking at.

I currently teach a Year 9/10 group of six artists. I just want to say thank you to Marley for sharing her talent. And a thank you to this wonderful group of six artists I have the pleasure to teach.

POETRY SLAM WORKSHOP On Wednesday 19th of February, students of Year 9 and Year 10 were treated to a Slam Poetry Workshop through the Poets Out Loud Youth Program. This was an excellent opportunity for our students to explore their creative side and be guided through the process of creating slam poetry. The students who participated in the workshops had a lot of fun and were encouraged to be collaborative and courageous as they:

    • Created a poem within a team• Gained skills in creative writing and public speaking• Improve their confidence to tell their stories and speak up• Self-advocated using creativity and teamwork• Had the opportunity to share their work in a fun and non-threatening

environment• Learnt first-hand about pathways in the arts from professional poets in

    their own community.

The students produced and performed excellent poems and Miss Williams and Miss Boserio were thoroughly impressed.

As a result of the outstanding effort of Sathya Sai students, an invite was extended to them and our wider community members to participate or attend the next Youth Poetry Slam Competition.

A poetry slam is a spoken-word competition. Teams or individuals perform one piece for a welcoming audience. A panel of judges choose winners based on writing, performance, and audience response.

The Youth Poetry Slam is a free, family-friendly event as part of Tweed Shire Council’s Youth Week program. Details as follows:

    Date: Friday April 5, 6:30 – 8:30pm (entrants to arrive 5:30pm)

    Venue: Tweed Civic Auditorium

    Cost: Free event

Prizes:  Includes cash prizes and trophies for the winning poets

WRAPPY WEDNESDAYS Each Wednesday our P&F runs a canteen at the high school campus to give parents a break from making lunches. It is also a chance for the P&F to raise money, which they donate back to the school (last year we purchased outdoor seating with our canteen funds).

We are currently offering delicious cheese, hummus and salad wraps for $4.50. We tend to vary the menu according to seasons. Last term we offered Mexican nourish bowls. In winter, we generally make soup and toasted sandwiches.

Orders are collected each Wednesday morning and we always try to have some extra ingredients for students who don’t get their pre-orders in.  So please send $4.50 with your student on Wednesdays.

If you wish to volunteer to help out at canteen please contact:
