UTILIZATION OF OPEN SOURCE TECHNOLOGY TO CREATE COST

EFFECTIVE PORTABLE CAMERA SYSTEMS IN TEACHING Dr. Anil Reddy K (3

rd year PG, Department of Pathology)

Pathology is the branch of Medicine, which

characterizes the disease at the tissue level and at

times to the cellular level. The present-day norm

of teaching Pathology is digitalized and done as a

combination of the High Definition LED panels

or projectors, custom made manufacturer

provided HD camera, adaptor and teaching

trinocular head microscopes. But even with the

digitization and rapidly advancing technologies,

the cost of the Original Equipment Manufacturer

(OEM) cameras and adapters is still high which

amounts to a minimum of Rs.1,15,000/- for a

single microscope.

With upgradation of the display panels and

projectors to best possible resolutions at all the

teaching galleries, demonstration rooms and

practical halls, the high-resolution camera has become the missing piece to utilize these

display devices to their full potential at all these locations. The department is equipped with a

digital camera system in histopathology section for teaching purposes and low resolution

closed circuit system for slide demonstration in practical hall.

The utilization of the open source technologies and 3D printing had helped us in achieving

this digitization at fraction of the cost at a mere Rs.6000 and an additional advantage of

portable camera system which can convert any binocular microscope to a teaching

microscope enabling us to have the facility of slide demonstration in all the teaching

locations.

The systems comprised of Raspberry Pi camera system and Mobile High Definition Link

system (MHL). Raspberry Pi is the credit card sized, single board computer, which is an open

source initiative. Pairing it with the Raspberry Pi camera, a Sony IMX219 8MP sensor, HD

(30fps) fixed focus device, which delivers a high definition image to the LED panels

available in the histopathology and cytology sections. The adapter which aligns the Pi camera

system to the eye piece objective of any compound microscope is an open source design

which enables this flexibility.

In case of MHL system, a list of mobiles with inbuilt MHL capability is provided in

http://www.mhltech.org/devices.aspx, which needs to be paired with an adaptor and MHL

cable available in the open market. Like the Raspberry Pi system this also provides

portability at a fraction of the cost. The Raspberry Pi system is being used for the Trinocular

head microscopes and the MHL system is used for binocular microscopes successfully in the

Department of Pathology for various teaching activities for the past one year.

Dr. James Naughtie, Chancellor, University of Stirling, Scotland, UK presented the Degree

on June 27, 2018. He was among ten selected and sponsored for the course by the

Commonwealth Commission in the year 2015. He is one of the First International Degree

holder among our faculty.
