Achieving Energy Efficiency For PoE
(Power over Ethernet) Networks
PoE Introduction
POE or Power Over Ethernet is a technology incubated by which the
transfer of electrical power as well as data over data cables in Ethernet
network is done.
2
POE Plus
The Updated version of PoE is ‘PoE+’ or ‘PoE Plus’
The Standard is IEEE 802.3at-2009
Provides up to 25.5W of DC Power to Powered Devices
POE
The PoE standard is IEEE 802.3af-2003 Provides up to 15.4W of DC Power to Powered
Devices
PSE & PD
Power (Sourcing Equipment PSE)
PSE is a PoE enabled device that gives ‘Source Power’ to devices on the network via Ethernet Cable
PSE includes Router, Switches etc
Powered Devices (PD)
Powered Devices get the power from PSE and work on it.
PD includes devices like Surveillance Camera, Wireless Access Points, IP Cameras etc
3
Types of PSE
EndSpan: Directly connects with
PDs
MidSpan: Fits in between PoE/Non-
PoE switch & PD
POE Switch = PSE End-Span

Power Management And Savings
Priority setting of ports (as Low/High) – Low priority
ports are powered off when the peak power usage
exceeds some predefined limit
Scheduled power-on/off of the ports help reduce
energy usage
PoE Management software has the capability to enable and
disable the PoE ports on a
network switch.
PoE configuration is provided with the help of CLI, SNMP, XML /
Web interfaces etc.
Dynamic Or Need Based Control Of Ports
10
Longevity of Devices is extended
SNMP & MIB is used in NMS to
monitor the devices in the
network which also facilitates the controlling
of ports.
Automatic shutdown of ports when
loop/cable fault is detected
Event-Based and Time-
Based control of ports is
possible with PoE. Example,
when PoE powered
devices are not in use those
ports can be disabled until
needed.
Need based control is vital. For eg. if the
floor does not have any users,
there is no need to have the IP-Phone Powered ON
To save energy and enhance security, the
PoE Management facilitates the administrators
to configure when to power
on/off the network ports.
Auto Configuration Of Ports
11
Ease of Use
Device Classification helps ‘Power budget’ feature and facilitate Intelligent Power
Management
Helps to monitor and diagnose any
configuration changes in the PD
Auto-configure the port based on the device
connected to PoE devices(if a class 0/3
device is connected, set the priority as low).
PD Detection is the primary activity followed by PD Classification
Port prioritization is one of the key features and it
helps in the auto-configuration process.
Smart Scheduling Based On The Usage Trends
Prediction is Possible
An hourly/weekly scheduling mechanism is used to function the advanced power control. Each PoE port
can be switched ON/OFF on hourly basis too.
Usage Trends helps to manage smart scheduling based on
abnormal conditions, such as power cut, over feeding or
under supplying etc.
It also helps to prevent error or any fatal situations in
advance based on the possible observation.
PoE Power Scheduling & PoEM Smart Scheduling
helps to implement power saving policy in a
better way
Polling the amount of real-time power delivery on each
and every port of PSE helps to know and monitor the current status and also get an idea of
the PoE Port trend.

Analysis Of Devices’ And Ports’ Energy Efficiency
13
Data Action Information Knowledge
Visibility of energy consumption in multiple dimensions (PD type, class, PSE, port, time)
Ability to identify shift in the typical energy consumption of a PD at the PSE
Improved energy efficiency and hence direct savings to Enterprises and Data centers
Some KPIs & Metrics for Energy Efficiency:
•Watts per Active Port : Total power consumed by PSE divided by total number of active ports
•PSE Power Consumption across timelines & PDs Connected and its power consumption for a PSE

Power Management Through Available Presence Server Usage Data
20
Presence Server plays a vital role in network environments
Information on IT devices(status) as well as people (presence) can be captured and the tracking is possible
People presence is identified using IP Cameras, Door Controls etc. The data is processed in Presence Server and helps the administrator to do Power
Management manually or automatically
Threshold values received from presence server with respect to power facilitates better Power Management
